COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A middle school teacher in South Carolina has been accused of dragging a student under a table during class, telling the boy "this is what the Nazis do to Jews," police said Monday.

The 12-year-old student said he got up to sharpen a pencil at Bluffton Middle School on Wednesday when Patricia Mulholland grabbed him by his collar and said, "come here, Jew," police said. The teacher then dragged him 10 feet under a table and made the comment about Nazis, according to police.

The seventh-grade teacher claims she was trying to teach the students a lesson about the Holocaust. The social studies teacher had a lesson on the Holocaust the day before.

"What was a demonstrative attempt to teach about World War II and the Holocaust has been taken to mean an anti-Semitic rant and it was nothing like that," said her attorney, Robert Ferguson.

Mulholland was arrested and faces charges of assault and battery and public disorderly conduct, Bluffton Police spokesman Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said.

Ferguson said Mulholland is a well-regarded teacher and hasn't had any problems during her 23-year career with Beaufort County schools.

"This is such a sensitive topic. But what do you determine is instructive teaching? Where is that line?" Ferguson said.

School district officials said Mulholland was placed on administrative leave Thursday. The district is sharing any information it has with police and will conduct its own investigation once the criminal probe is finished.

Police would not identify the student and refused to say whether he was Jewish.

Bluffton is located along the coast in the southeastern part of the state.

I'll bet this is not the first time she grabs a student and tugs or pushes at him. It is aggressive (in a passive-aggressive manner!), but it always comes across like coach punching you in the shoulder after a game, so none of the students had so far complained.

The student getting up annoyed her, as it always does, but instead of having firm rules about getting up and walking around, she smacks, pokes, throws chalk at, etc., students who do that. This time, she grabbed the student and was about to say, "Come here, you!" but her mind flashed, and it came out "Jew," and from there, it was all downhill.

I don't think she's anti-semitic, but I also don't buy that she was reinforcing yesterday's lesson on the Holocaust. She just lost it, that's all. She's lucky she didn't batter the kid. Obviously, what she did was wrong, but probably the only job where you constantly have to deal with more awful people is cop.

She had no right to put her hands on him. Students have enough trouble with student on student bullying. They should not have to worry about their teachers putting their hands on them. Her comments, as well, were offensive. What will she do when she teaches about the death penalty or Alcatraz?

Public school teachers always whine that they want to be treated like professionals, that is, until they're caught abusing the children -- then they want special treatment and special considerations that no professional person would expect to be afforded.

We must crack down on these child abusers. Fire them on the spot, charge them and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. It won't stop the abuse altogether -- but if these monsters knew there would be serious and immediate consequences for their crimes against children, they would be far less likely to abuse.

That my friend would be enough to deter others from following in the path of this senseless teacher who obviously failed to put together an effective lesson plan. I also blame the administrators. Somebody needs to teach HER a lesson!

Absolutely. We wouldn't need hidden cameras and tape recorders to spy out teacher abuse in classrooms if we had dedicated quality administrators. Nonetheless, each teacher must be held responsible for his or her own actions when it comes to physical and verbal abuse. Short of having a supervisor sitting in every classroom at all times -- there isn't much administrators can do to prevent the type of teacher abuses which daily appear in the headlines.

I thought teachers were not supposed to touch...? At least that was the reason given by some, when they did not intervene and stop students from bullying others.....AND JUST STOOD BY....but, where is the protection for students when teachers are the bullies.....? A shame this teacher chose this disgusting way to dismiss a 23 year career.....and this act, overshadows all.

Why are the alleged educators in America preying on the children they are supposed to be instructing or disciplining(to disipline means to instruct not harm or physically abuse)? Is their a National drug and alcohol or mental healt evaluation done randomly at alll levels of education? Are they legally vetted? Are these abuses happening as frequently by young teachers? Why are these teachers getting away with abusing these children who appear to be children of color and/or low socioeconomic status for the most part? What is the responsibility of the parents and administrators in these situations? How dysfunctional is American society and are we raising monsters?

When an article leaves one with more questions than comments it may mean that they article was too superficial and/or not substantantial enough for one to get the relevance of the piece? It is like saying to the poster give me more information? You are new to this site and I have noticed that many of the newest posters have a tendency to question the character of the person posting and not the article the poster is responding to, so since it is silly season are you being paid to ask benign questions due to some political paid agenda or are you just not that bright or inquisitive that you question the person posting or replying and not the person who wrote the article being questioned? XV8 Crisis Suit is one of the most sensible people posting on here. :)
But I'll take a crack at your many questions just for the fun of it...
1) Not really sure, other than the old saying 'there's a few bad apples in every barrel'. Most of us would never think of doing that or would condone it...
2) No...but maybe there should be something, since it turns out she was under the influence of something...most of us would have no problem with it if it was done properly.
3) Not really sure what you mean, we aren't running for political office...!
4) well it depends on the 'abuse', physical, probably not, but if you believe the media, all the sexual improprieties are committed by those of us that are young pretty and female...
5) I have no answer to that one, to me they are the ones we give the most positive attention to...
6) parents - to talk to us, to have their kids prepared for school everyday, and to let us or someone know right away if something happens that shouldn't. administrators, to enforce the rules fairly and get all the facts before passing judgment
7) not as dysfunctional as media makes us out to be, and, no, I have seen thousands of great kids come through my doors and not one of them is a 'monster'.

I proofed that a bunch, hope I didn't misspell anything...

The first time i ever heard of the Holocaust was my Middle School History class. My teacher did such a great job that I in turn took it upon myself through High School and college to learn as much about the Holocaust as possible. I even traveled to Germany, Poland, and Czech for study. My Middle School teacher used the same tactics in our history class. It was because of this class that I pursued more learning on the topic. SO RELAX PEOPLE!

One more sign of how far the Holocaust industry(tm) has gone in American with it's propaganda and self inflated importance. Yes, it was terrible. No it does not merit special consideration above and beyond all topics of History. Modern or ancient. Obviously this teacher has been conditioned beyond the acceptable norm in promoting "Holocaust Awareness".

Communism has resulted in the deaths of (academic estimates) 250,000,000 people world wide. Are there many museums or memorials to the lives lost? Special holidays? Trillions in reparations? Too deep an imbalance in significance of one event as taught in schools today. More emotionally based then factual to be sure.

Yes you may give a kid a high five or pat on the back. These are signs of congradulations of a job well done...Grabbing by the collar and dragging a kid 10ft under a table is is a sign of abusive action, on a 12 yer old, both physically and mentally.
I really hope you understand the difference.

Immediately prior to this incident a student captured on cell phone video the teacher acting erratically as if under the influence of alcohol or medication. What was described above was part of an abnormal pattern of behavior that day, much of which was unrelated to any so-called Holocaust lesson plan. Someone is spinning this story to make it look like an insensitivity issue instead of a substance abuse issue.

Could very easily be a diabetic/blood sugar issue too...often mistaken for intoxication.

I almost got sent home from school once for 'possible intoxication.' I convinced my principal to just buy me a candy bar or give me an orange from the vending machine/lunch room. I got an orange. Ate it. Problem solved. Why? My blood sugar was low.

There are a certain percentage of humans who are below average intelligence. There is a percentage of people who are incompetent. This means that there exist a percentage of people in every profession who should not be there. Based on the limited information provided in this 'article', it would seem this teacher falls into this percentage.

Apparently you fall into that percentage because this:

"There are a certain percentage of humans who are below average intelligence. There is a percentage of people who are incompetent. This means that there exist a percentage of people in every profession who should not be there."

doesn't logically follow.

I think there are too many missing facts here to make any kind of judgment. If the teacher was in the middle of a history lesson, which is easy enough to prove, there is a whole class of witnesses, then she has a weak but little defense. If it was, as the article says, a lesson from the day before and she was teaching math or some other subject when she grabbed the child, then what she did was out of line. If the child was Jewish then either way she was out of line. Is she going to teach on Rome and get physical with the Christian children or teach on the middle ages and have the Catholics go after the Muslims? The only reason to get physical with a child of this age is to protect them from hurting themselves or someone else. It isnt your kid, hands off.
