Facebook Organ Donor Tool: Mark Zuckerberg Talks Social Network's Initiative To Save Lives (VIDEO)

Facebook Organ Donor

A new Facebook feature has the potential to save lives.

The social network announced on Tuesday the arrival of a new tool that will allow people to share their status as an organ donor on their timelines.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sat down for an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America" on May 1 to discuss the new tool, which, according to The New York Times, is available to U.S. and U.K. users.

As Zuckerberg explains, the project was inspired by Facebook members who have used the site to solve problems creatively. The CEO hopes this new initiative will spread awareness and encourage people to register as donors.

"People are using the same social tools that they're using just to keep in touch with people on a day-to-day basis to solve these important social issues," said Zuckerberg. "So, we figured, okay, well, could we do anything that would help people solve other types of issues, like all of the people who need organ donations in the world? And we came up with this pretty simple thing which we're hopeful can help out just in the same way that people have done all these other things."

In addition, it seems Zuckerberg was influenced by those close to him personally, including his girlfriend Priscilla Chang, who is currently studying pediatrics, and Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs, who underwent a liver transplant before his death last October, reports the Associated Press.

"Today, more than 114,000 people in the United States, and millions more around the globe, are waiting for the heart, kidney or liver transplant that will save their lives," wrote Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg in a May 1 blog post. "Many of those people – an average of 18 people per day – will die waiting, because there simply aren’t enough organ donors to meet the need. Medical experts believe that broader awareness about organ donation could go a long way toward solving this crisis. And we believe that by simply telling people that you're an organ donor, the power of sharing and connection can play an important role."

To help spread awareness of this issue and share your organ donor status on your timeline, click on "Life Event," then "Health and Wellness." Choosing the "Organ Donor" option will allow you to fill in where and when you registered as well as share a personal story. As always, you can choose which groups of friends you would like to share your organ donor status with. Also, a link will be provided so you can officially sign up with an appropriate organ donor registry.

Check out Mark Zuckerberg's interview with ABC's Robin Roberts (above), then make sure to watch Facebook's video below to learn more about how the tool works and how you can start using it today. What do you think about this new initiative? Will you be sharing your organ donor status on your timeline? Let us know in the comments!

There must be an advertising connection here or Facebook wouldn't be promoting it. I'll keep my status to myself.

How incredibly sad. As a double organ transplant recipient, I am so happy that my donor was not like you.

Isn't this what the DMV record is for ? What if someone doesn't have donor on their DL but puts it on facebook? Will that lead to 'wasted organs' ? Zuckerburg fails to realize not every person on the planet has a facebook. May have good intentions but how well will it work??

Doesn't work that way. If you make your wishes known either way, it will only add, not subtract.

So Facebook won't even give us a "Don't Like" Button - much less let us have full control over our privacy on our page, but now it wants to go inside our bodies to mess with the privacy of our internal organs? (By the way I'm completely supportive of organ donation personally, but really Facebook?)

You may be supportive of it, but you sure are ingnorant of it. How in the world is saying you are a willing organ donor mean that facebook is "going to mess in your body." Do you have any idea how...I won't say it.

Are people losing their minds? Planning to trust Facebook with all of this privacy information. Hasn't anyone read the User Agreement??? It allows Facebook to use ANYof your information, including selling it to 3rd parties.

You've got to be crazy to trust this kid with your life. Crazy.

I'm not impressed by this. This is the worst possible idea ever.

Facebook has very porous user security, it has no safe harbor, and your user profile information is made available to 3rd party applications your "friends" use. So in that scenario, your information about your medical status should not be shared. Donor databanks and medical institutions/facilities are required to keep patient information under lock and key. Even the DMV cannot go around publishing donor information.

I often see posts from people encouraging their friends to sign their driver's license, etc. as a donor. Instead of all those small, ineffectual posts I think this is terrific.

Organ donation is sorely lacking... people wait months and years for an organ and end up dying because so many people just "take it with them." There should be so many kidneys and livers stacked up that we have a surplus.
It's sick and egocentric to deny your organs to someone who needs them. I've seen first hand what's it like to wait and wait for a donation. My husband was the fortunate recipient of a liver transplant that brought him 4 more years of a happy life before other fatal conditions caught up with him. But I met many, many people who wait and wait. It's inhumane IMHO.

Facebook is not the appropriate forum to declare that information. It does not meet nor have the security requirements for ensuring privacy of such information. It puts donors at risk.

It's one thing to post information giving people the tools to become donors, but it's another to post that you are a donor, on an app that does not offer safe harbor to user information.

It's very selfish to expect others to give up their organs. Would becoming a donor even occurred to you if the medical need had never touched your life? I cannot tolerate people who want everyone else to think the way they do, only because it affects them. I will not see others as walking donations, and it's really sick to think of other humans in that manner.

One day I may need a transplant for a lifelong medical condition, but my only guarantee in this life is to go through it with the body I was born with. I respect the rights, privacy and religious reasons for any person to die with their bodies intact. And so should you.

I was a signed donor for many years before that even touched my life. I never believed that I should be selfish enough to deny someone life while my organs rot.

This is a step towards Facebook harvesting your organs.

How about they skip the empty gestures and just respect your privacy?
