Texas Teen Critical After School Police Shooting During Break-In Investigation

05/ 1/12 06:45 PM ET AP

Texas Teen Shot

PASADENA, Texas — A police officer told investigators Tuesday that he shot a 14-year-old boy suspected in the overnight break-in of a Houston-area classroom after believing the teenager was reaching for a gun.

The boy was in critical but stable condition at a Houston hospital and was expected to survive, authorities said. The officer was placed on leave pending the investigation.

Pasadena Police Assistant Chief Bud Corbett said the officer, a 17-year law enforcement veteran, told investigators he did not know how old the suspected burglar was when he shot him. The names of the boy and the officer were not released.

The boy, an eighth-grader at the school, was shot in the chest by the district police officer, who was investigating a broken window in a portable classroom containing computers after an alarm went off, Pasadena Independent School District Superintendent Kirk Lewis said.

According to a release from the district, the officer arrived at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday at the campus of Miller Intermediate School in the Houston suburb of Pasadena. The officer called for backup but before help arrived he spotted the boy leaving the building.

Corbett said when the boy came out of the structure, he was backlit and appeared as more of a silhouette to the officer, who was standing under a light. The officer then told him to stop, Corbett said.

"The officer observed he had his hands at his chest and he thought that what was in those hands was a gun," said Corbett, whose agency is investigating the shooting along with the Harris County District Attorney's Office. School district police were investigating the burglary.

The boy, dressed in a black hoodie and black shorts, was standing about 20 feet away on some steps outside the classroom when he was shot in the upper chest, near his right shoulder. Corbett said the boy was not shot while trying to run away but had stopped and was facing the officer when he was hit.

It was not until after the shooting that the officer discovered how old the suspected burglar was and that he was not armed but carrying a mesh backpack, which contained contents from the building, according to authorities.

The district said that the incident was the first time in the history of its police department, which was established in 1981, that a firearm was discharged by an officer as part of a law enforcement action.

The portable classroom where the incident occurred was often used for after-school activities but wasn't currently being used as a classroom. Classes at the school went on as scheduled Tuesday.

"We want to make the day as normal as we can for our students," Lewis said.

How come in the live clipping the reporter says the kid the cop shot was 18 and in the article it says the kid was 14 who went to that school? So how old is this kid ? Anyways just to add I love how the reporter said the police officer who shot this kid who was breaking into his school saw that he had a bag of some sort and opened fire because the cop felt threatened. That is such BS, this kid must have made a sudden move for the cop to shoot him, by the way it says he was shot in the chest not the back. News in no longer the news it's entertainment, why can't they just report real news and not half truths to get ratings.

All i can say is the Media is full of it you get half facts and the rest made up, Why can't the news just report real news and not entertainment?

So a thief was shot in the act of stealing school property.

If he lives, I guess he'll have learned a lesson.

I know, I have read it. I am not the biggest fan of cops, having met a few who are just bullies with a badge, but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when they go into a life threatening situation. Clearly, some people thinks cop's perception while in a situation should be equal to their hindsight, and that's too much to ask of anyone.

If by the officers own words he saw a bag in his hand then why did he need to shoot him, we have got to get control of the people who are intrusted with protecting our communities. If they are this frightened, they should possibly seek other employment.

You maybe right however it wouldn't make much difference whether he was white or black, this officer doesn't deserve that job

The person was back lit. He couldn't tell what was in his hands, just that he was holding something up in front of him. Could very well have been a gun. Only after he was shot was it discovered it was a backpack....full of stuff the kid just stole from the classroom.

People are insane. The kid stole from the school. I'm sure the cop was on edge as he pulled up. The cop told the kid to stop. The kid ran, I imagine, in a fast turning manner. If I'm a cop and I tell someone who just committed a felony to stop, and they move quickly in any manner I am shooting them first. I'd rather find out they didn't have a gun while they are on the ground than find out they did while I am. And let's not forget, the kid robbed a school, and disobeyed a cop. I don't understand coming down on the officer like this. Clearly this kid lacks in common sense and the most important thing to him was getting away.

you should thank your god the kid was injured and not the man who swore to protect your life.

A) Hands up when the officer asks. B) Do not run from a cop. Combine this with a black hoodie and stolen goods, how is the cop to know this kid did NOT have a gun? Cops can't take chances with CRIMINALS. The CRIMINAL did exactly what he was NOT suppose to do. You disobey the law, you face the consequences.

Did you read the article? The kid did not run. He was standing there facing the officer.

I read the article and there are two different versions. The kid was shot in the chest, not the back, so who knows. It will be investigated by people with more information than anybody who read this article. My point is it's asinine to condemn the officer before the thing is investigated.

perhaps my understanding of geometry is lacking here, but how can someone be shot in the chest while running away?

The video says the suspect was 18 and he was shot in the chest. I don't know who's right but no where does anyone say the suspect was shot in the back.

You have to love all the Bravehearts who won't investigate the raccoon in their garbage pails at 1 a.m. letting you know how the cop shouldn't ever feel threatened.

I remember back in the day I used to sit with my dad and watch Gunsmoke every week. I remember being upset at someone getting shot for doing something wrong...like breaking in and trespassing. My dad soothed me and told me that this was back in the wild west days, before the Americans were "civilized". His word, not mine. =]]

He was wrong. Americans never did glom on to restorative justice. Shoot first, ask questions later. Shoot first, when your property is threatened. Shoot first if your property is trespassed on.

Cops seem to feel threatened a lot. Are that that scared of everyone and everything? Maybe if they got some training or even some counseling they wouldn't be so afraid that everyone was out to get them.

Why were his hands at his chest and not up in the air? Unnecessary force or unnecessary risk for the officer to take?
