Wall Street Journal, News Corp. Receive Suspicious White Powder Letters

UPDATE: The Associated Press has corrected its initial report, clarifying that Fox News did not receive an envelope containing white powder. News Corp. received two letters, at least one of which was addressed to The Wall Street Journal.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Wall Street Journal and News Corp. headquarters received letters containing a suspicious white powder on Tuesday.

The powder was later revealed to be cornstarch, according to police spokesperson Paul Browne.

The Associated Press reports that the letters were stored in a basementm and the News Corp. building was not evacuated.

The letters were among a total of ten that arrived at New York City organizations on Monday and Tuesday. Various banks also received envelopes with powder.

Browne said that some contained notes saying "This is a reminder that you are not in control" and "Happy May Day." Police believe that "the messages indicated a link to today's May Day demonstrations."

Reuters reports that Ed Needham, a representative for Occupy Wall Street, dismissed the possibility that his movement was responsible for the envelopes on Monday. "It doesn't sound like something that we would do," he said.
