Courtney Love Loses Rights To Kurt Cobain's Image

Courtney Love's daughter may not be able to get her mother banned from Twitter, but she takes what's rightfully hers.

According to sealed documents obtained by The Fix, 19-year-old Frances Bean Cobain has taken over control of the right to her late father Kurt's name, likeness and appearance. The documents show that Love agreed to step down as acting manager of End of Music LLC -- the corporation responsible for generating money from Cobain's publicity rights -- when she received a $2.75 million loan from Frances' trust fund in 2010. Until Love pays the loan back, she won't receive any profits made from her late husband's publicity rights.

Love has been estranged from her daughter since 2009, when Frances was granted a restraining order against her, citing drug addiction, violence and the deaths of two pets. Since losing custody of Frances, Love also lost control of her daughter's trust fund, and stepped down as an adviser.

For Love, all this means that her control over her late husband's estate and image is rapidly shrinking. In 2005, Love sold 25 percent of the rights to the Nirvana catalog for $50 million, and five years later, she was offered $162 million for the rest of her majority stake, an offer she said she was considering because the songs and their royalties were "cursed."

In the years since Love lost custody of Frances, she's continued to ensure their estrangement. Most recently, Love went on a Twitter rant accusing former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl of hitting on Frances.
