Elizabeth Warren Explains Native American Heritage Listing In Law School Directory

emocratic U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren said Wednesday she listed herself as having Native American heritage in law school directories because she hoped to meet people with similar roots.

BRAINTREE, Mass. -- Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren said Wednesday she listed herself as having Native American heritage in law school directories because she hoped to meet people with similar roots.

Warren, a Harvard Law School professor, said she never tried to use minority status to get teaching jobs and criticized the campaign of Republican Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown for suggesting that may have been the case.

The listing did not produce any such contacts, and she later stopped using it, Warren said.

Law school directories from the Association of American Law Schools from 1986 to 1995 put Warren on the association's list of "minority law teachers" when she was teaching at the University of Texas and the University of Pennsylvania.

According to the directories, the list is made up of "those legal educators who stated they were members of a minority group."

Warren, who grew up in Oklahoma, has said she's proud of her family ties to Cherokee and Delaware tribes – a heritage she said she learned through stories passed down to her from older family members.

On Wednesday, she accused Brown's campaign of using the Native American listing as a way of insinuating that she was not qualified for her job.

"The only one as I understand it who's raising any question about whether or not I was qualified for my job is Scott Brown and I think I am qualified and frankly I'm a little shocked to hear anybody raise a question about whether or not I'm qualified to hold a job teaching," she said.

Brown himself has not made such a claim, though his campaign manager has said the story raises questions about Warren's credibility.

Asked about the controversy following a speech in Boston on Wednesday, Brown said of Warren: "I think she needs to answer the questions that are still lingering out there."

The story first surfaced last week when the Herald found a 1996 article in Harvard's student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, about student dissatisfaction about the number of women and minority professors on the Harvard Law faculty. In the story, Harvard Law spokesman Mike Chmura referred to Warren as Native American.

Warren said on Friday that she was unaware Harvard had promoted her as a minority professor and Charles Fried, the professor who recruited Warren to Harvard, said any suggestion that she got her job in part because of a claim of minority status was "totally stupid, ignorant, uninformed and simply wrong."

A Massachusetts genealogist said he uncovered evidence that Warren's great-great-great grandmother had listed herself as Cherokee in an 1894 document.

Republicans remind me of that guy who cheats on his girlfriend, and then becomes obsessed with the idea that she's cheating on him when she hasn't done anything wrong.

It doesn't occur to them that a person could simply be interested in their heritage for the sake of knowing about the people that ultimately created them. Warren couldn't have listed her heritage - the way millions of us with Native  Read More...

It's interesting that Elizabeth's small bit of Native American heritage is a source of such vitriolic denials by those who fear her politics.

Ironic, such fears... since she's both smart and kind, and rational enough to be concerned for people who are most in need of public concern.

Liberalism is pretty well aligned with progressive states. Progress. It's a good thing.

(Part 1/2)

Just like she wasn't aware declaring she was a minority during hiring might have assisted in obtaining the job. Or after the fact, being Native American (sorry, CLAIMING she’s Native American - I always get those confused, apparently she does too), assists in maintaining positions at Harvard including potential promotion above or before other "white men".

But, she wasn't aware. Funny, Mitt Romney wasn't aware a man who didn’t come out of the closet for years still made a multipage story starting on the front page of The Washington Post. So, Romney’s involved in a prank during high school awarding him multiple pages (afterward the family said "victim" would not have wanted this to be played politically (proving Washington Post didn’t even talk with the victim’s family) AND none of the so called “sources” ever saw any of it, only hearing of this so-called event). Something says yellow journalism and a double standard.

(Part 2/2)

On the topic of President's/candidates, the Washington Post digs a story up from Romney's high school years yet no one is "able" or, shall we call it willing, to unearth President Obama's college history - classes, transcripts, essays, etc. I also find it funny (re: sad/pathetic) it took until this campaign for anyone to bring up the 'dog' story written by Obama in his own book. “Journalists" don’t have to find a story, just investigate around each of the stories he opted to tell, surrounding events, who was there, where does that lead, etc. The cocaine story sounds like a mighty good place to start. After all, if the media feels ‘high’ school pranks where Presidential reporting should be for Mitt Romney surely they ought not have an issue investigating felony drug use and possible distribution our President enjoyed while in college?

One has matured much more from years of high school once they are in college. One is accountable for his or her actions in college. Beyond 18 and especially 21 is fair game. Romney made 2-3 pages of the Washington Post for a prank in high school, Obama should fill the pages of the entire newspaper with just the information he told us in his books. Wow, the President finally found a stimulus package that would work.

Uh-oh....

The fact the story unfolds now that there is NO Native American ancestors at all and the woman she noted from family lore was indeed listed in the 1860 census as Caucasian. Furthermore, the man she married was indeed part of the Tennessee Militia that rounded up Cherokees into stockades for the trails of tears.

How very interesting.....and sad.

Here is the certificate of marriage and the license (lower right) as this is the VERY document her camp is claiming proves she is Indian perhaps YOU can point out where either document identifies her as such. But you will have to try SUPER hard since there is no indication whatsoever. Meaning the VERY document they claim to be the sole proof is nothing of the sort.

Furthermore, Census records that listed O.C. Sarah Smith Crawford (her married name) as a resident of Tennessee in 1830, 1840, and 1860 classify her as white, not Indian.

Sooooo......

why didnt warren go the harvard pow wow the other week as reported in the b herald? i thought one of the rationales for listing herself as a "native" american was to meet others just like her---perhaps for a bison dinner??

Seriously, this is a common event. Students "become" Indian when they're ready to apply to college. Remember Tom Brokaw and his TomTom company? He get a minority business loan by claiming to be an Indian.

Fellow HP posters ......there is one poster on this thread who has melted down over this article and is lashing out out in all directions. While hopelessly outnumbered by the facts of the story and , well, reality in general , she has done what most liberals who can;t accept defeat do .......

turn nasty and bitter........ because she is a child of god I do feel her pain and hope that she can find some peace with Warrens fatal set back. nevertheless.

Until our friend can get a grip on life she should be flagged for her abusive language and comments. Please read the last two pages of posts and flag as you deem necessary.

Let's hope she gains some control over her emotions soon.

I'm hoping that she has a better explanation because I actually like Warren. However, as it stands right now it looks pretty bad. Deciding to 'claim' Native American ancestry is a sort of running joke among white people applying to grad school or academic posts/grants. This is because almost almost all white people who have english/french/dutch ancestry that stretches back far enough have at least one or two native American ancestors. It's tempting to use this to one's advantage because having a Native American background is hugely advantageous in academia (much more so than being black or hispanic) due to the fact that Native Americans are greatly underrepresented in these areas. It's fine for Warren to explore her (limited) Native American roots, but she's too intelligent to not grasp the implications of using NA minority status in her professional and academic career. To identify yourself as a Native American in an official professional context means that you are a culturally non-white person who is involved actively with a reservation and experience in your day to day life the reality of living within a culture that has been devastated by colonialism, disease, alcoholism, displacement, and dwindling natural resources. For someone like Warren, who has enjoyed the privilege of being physically and culturally 'white', to leverage the suffering of an entire people for her personal gain is a cynical and reprehensible action that I would rank alongside the worst white collar criminals on wall street.
