Floyd Mayweather Rants About Manny Pacquiao Ahead Of Miquel Cotto Fight

By TIM DAHLBERG 05/ 2/12 06:10 PM ET AP

Floyd Mayweather
Floyd Mayweather stretches during a press conference with Miguel Cotto on May 2, 2012 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather takes on Cotto for the WBA Super World Light Middleweight Championship on Cinco de Mayo, Saturday, May 5, 2012.

LAS VEGAS -- Sorry, boxing fans. This is news you don't want to hear.

Enjoy Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday night against Miguel Cotto, if you wish. But understand this: Despite the fervent hope of almost everyone in boxing, Mayweather will not be fighting Manny Pacquiao.

Not later this year. Not ever.

If I wasn't sure of it before, I'm sure of it now. Hard not to be after watching Mayweather as he went into a bizarre rant for the benefit of myself, a few other writers, and his ever present band of sycophants.

This wasn't for HBO's "24/7" cameras, though it was better than anything on the most recent episodes. It had nothing to do with getting people to pony up $69.95 to watch the Cotto fight in their living rooms.

This was pure Mayweather, unvarnished, unplugged, and totally uninhibited.

He won't fight Pacquiao unless he's convinced he doesn't use steroids – something, by the way, that only Mayweather has accused the Filipino of doing. And there will be no convincing Mayweather that he's wrong.

"You all think I'm scared, I'm a coward? Well guess what? I'm a rich, scared coward. I'm a rich coward," Mayweather said. "And if that's the case, why the hell would you want to watch me? I don't want to watch no coward. I don't want to watch nobody who's scared and you all know for a fact I'm not scared. You all know that."

I'll take part of the blame for setting Mayweather off. Sitting next to him Tuesday in a VIP check-in room just off the lobby of the MGM Grand hotel, it seemed like a good time to get his thoughts on his main rival.

My mistake.

Instead of an answer, I got a soliloquy. Instead of a yes or no on Pacquiao, I got a disjointed diatribe on all things Mayweather.

He railed about common sense and hat sizes, doing the right thing and protecting his health. He called Bob Arum a professional liar, and suggested I was in the rival promoter's pocket.

He even questioned my patriotism for some odd reason that only his pals seemed to get.

"So, you're an American, right? I'm an American," he told me. "I was in the Olympics. I represent the red, white and blue. You know what the American writers should say? `Well, why's this guy from another country who comes over here and makes money taking it back to his country?

"Once again, I'm feeding American citizens every day. All I ask is give a little blood, give a little urine. That's a crime?"

Actually, the drug testing shouldn't even be an issue. Arum has already said Pacquiao is willing to take blood and urine tests in the weeks and months leading up to a fight with Mayweather.

But Mayweather seems obsessed with the idea Pacquiao is juicing. He seems to truly believe that Pacquiao has some sort of super human powers other fighters don't.

He's not going to change his mind. And, ultimately, that means no Pacquiao fight.

It is true that Pacquiao has grown noticeably since he first began boxing professionally in 1995 at 106 pounds. He's much more muscular and his body has filled out in the 17 years since then.

However, I reminded Mayweather that he boxed in the 1996 Olympics at 125 pounds, and will be fighting at 154 pounds against Cotto.

"Guess what? It took me years to get to here. Years," he said. "Go back and look at the pictures. First, his head is small. Then, all of a sudden, his head just grew? Come on, man. Stop! Stop this man! Come on, man! This (stuff's) so easy. Ray Charles can see this (stuff). Come on. Come on, now! Come on, man. I told you, it's basic common sense. Look at the pictures and tell me this man's head didn't get bigger? This man probably went from a seven and one-fourth to an eight. In a hat, a fitted hat. And you're going to tell me this (stuff) is all natural? Come on, man. Stop this. I'm going up in weight, but I ain't just walking through no damn fighters."

If that wasn't clear enough, Mayweather shifted into third person mode to press his point.

"Writers are saying, `Floyd is scared,'" he said. "No, Floyd cares about his family. Floyd is smart. At the end of the day, Floyd is smart. My health is important. My health is more important than money. They can take all the money and my health is more important. If they say, `Floyd, you can live a healthy life like you is right now, or you got to walk with a limp, and walk all bent over, but you can have a lot of money for the rest of your life,' I'd say, `Take it all back.'"

Guess we should give the guy a break. He's got a fight that might be tougher than most Saturday night, and he'll barely have time to relax afterward when he's due at the Las Vegas jail to begin serving what's expected to be a two-month sentence for domestic abuse.

Before I set him off he had been in a reflective mood, quietly talking about basically raising himself as a child. He spoke about how the gym was his only refuge, and how he used to put pictures from boxing magazines on his wall and stare at them at night, convinced he would one day be rich and famous, too.

He's both, now. But he's not so sure the fame part is worth it anymore.

"I want to live a normal life. I want to go to the mall by myself, but I know I can't," he said. "I do want to take a walk by myself, but I can't. There's a lot I want to do."

It's hard not to like Mayweather in these moments. Actually, I've always liked the Mayweather I've been around, a guy who is generally thoughtful and upbeat. He contributes some of his considerable fortune to those less fortunate, and he does it mostly without asking for credit. His various arrests show another side, yes, but at the age of 35 he seems to finally be outgrowing the foibles of his youth.

I still like him, even after the rant that ended with a dramatic flourish when he leaned over and offered his hand to me.

"Have a good day," he said.

LOLZ Leave the poor shaking man alone ! its obvious ! he knows and accepted the fact that IF He enters that ring with Manny PAquiao, that he will be limping and he is afraid of his health and probably life, so should he. Just imagine this , look what manny did to ricky Hatton and Cotto, these are respectable and yes lovable fighters who never pissed manny off... but look how they suffered. Now Imagine What will Floyd look like knowing that Manny is dying to get in the ring with him just to beat him up silly because of floy's immature and totally unprofessional rants... so give floy Gayweather a break ! He doesnt want to fight the man because he is afraid of what this man can do to him, then so be it ! RESPECT ONES FEAR ! and we can feel hes fear oozing out of his petty stupid rant !

Mayweather would easily outpoint Manny. The only reason that this fight will not happen is the blood feud between Floyd and Bob Arum. Bob Arum believes Floyd betrayed him when he bought out his contract for $750k after his bout with Zab Judah in '06. As long as Arum is alive and Manny Pacquiao does not take a loss, it will never happen. If you don't believe me, why do you think Cotto is fighting Mayweather now....because he is no longer contracted with Top Rank.

However, if Pacquiao loses to Bradley(which I highly doubt because Bradley is a soft puncher and would never get the decision unless he thoroughly dominated the fight and even then the judges may still rule in Manny's favor) the fight could happen as a last big payday for Manny and Arum. I think Arum would prefer that to a rematch with Bradley because if Bradley won he would be undefeated, easier to market, and is a young fighter with many big money fights ahead of him unlike Manny and Floyd who are rapidly approaching the twilight of their respective careers.

Well, why WOULD an undefeated, concededly bestial undefeated fighter agree to go toe to toe with the only better fighter in the world? You hate it, Money, but you wouldn't win. We all know it.

Well... it may still all be a broken record but at least it's not talking about left-overs.

If the fight doesn't happen, and Mayweather retires undefeated, he will always have the asterisc after his record. And all the fight fans know that mayweather punked out and wouldn't fight a man who has a chance to whip him. He will abuse Cotto tomorrow, but it proves nothing. Deep down he will know his legacy is tarnished because he wouldn't fight the best. Would Sugar Ray Robinson duck a fight like this? Would Delahoya? Would Evander Holyfield? I think Floyd would probably win the fight by decision by running away from Manny, but why not prove it once and for all? I defend Mayweather alot, I have never seen the man get hit with two good punches in a row in every fight I have seen him in. BUT the asterisk will always be ther.

Plus 95% of boxing fans know Mayweather is ducking this fight

Your post makes nonsense because the fact of tthe matter is that Mayweather would be the clear favorite in a potential fight with Pacquiao. That means that a clear majority of people would expect Mayweather to defeat Pacquiao. So why would there be an asterisk by his record if he never faces Pacquiao? That's a haters point of view, not the of a non bias boxing fan. Pacquiao would benefit the most from a fight with Mayweather even if he were to lose because he's not expected to win. If Mayweather were to defeat Pacquiao, he'd get little to no credit from the people who already dislike him. Mayweaher's haters would simply move on to Sergio Martinez's bandwagon, and claim that Mayweather is "scared" of him. "95% of boxing fans know that Mayweather is ducking this fight". No, don't confuse haters such as yourself with true boxing fans. We know a little better than you're giving us credit for.

huh???? Mayweather the clear fav.? dude come on we understand floyd is shaking and scared, If he doesnt want to fight then dont admit it period. well actually with this latest rant he did admitted that he is totally scared of Manny Paquiao LOL hes asking for a bigger money because he knows hes gonna loose... see Pacman Team Agreed on the drug test, They proposed a 45 - 45 % and winner takes 10% .... and somehow Floyd is still bitching about the test ... which Team Pacman agreed a year ago ... come on ... you cannot force a scared man ... hes not being smart ... he just lack heart .....

the same way i don't understand his rant, i DO understand it. the only reason i don't get the entire thing is because i'm not inside his head and know what he has gone thru trying to get this fight with pacman, on equal and level footing. must be frustrating to hear so many judgments about yourself, knowing that people only think they have all the info to judge from.

he's not scared at all, of the guy. floyd hasn't been beaten in pro fights and hasn't even dq'd himself once or twice like most of the other would-be undefeated pros (rjj, until he started to fall off). floyd is a pro, a technician and a historian and manny stands very little chance anyway if they were to make it to the squared circle.

i wasn't always a floyd fan because of how he mouths too much and "makes it rain" in clubs instead of doing something constructive with his money. but, i don't have to like his personality, to know he is a complete stud in the ring and like hopkins (another legend i had to learn to like personally), he's in charge of what he does. sometimes that works in his favor and sometimes it doesn't.

What is funny about it is, if the sides are switched, these same articles written to demonize Mayweather will talk about how Manny has the right to know; how Mayweather was being unreasonable and was afraid of Manny or of being exposed. Think about this: Whites could not take the fact that the William sisters were dominating women's tennis, suddenly they wanted random testing to see whether Serena was doping, even though they have had bigger and muscled White women playing tennis before the William sisters came on the scene. Somehow, the same thing that is done in the Olympics, the same thing they instituted because of the Williams sisters, is considered out-of-line when a Black man wants the same thing in his own sport. We are not fooled. At the end of the day, Mayweather has nothing to prove to any of you and he gets to decide what he will do, not any writer or any blog poster!

I love Mayweather and I love Pacquiao. I don't have to choose between the two. But I do think Mayweather would win in a matchup.

Floyd mayweather is so creative in makng excuses. Maybe he should get a job writing scripts for plays or something. I see potential.
09:24 AM on 05/04/2012
And, yet, he is undefeated!
08:59 PM on 05/21/2012
Dude any boxer with hes talent on making up excuses and unrealistic demandss can and will be undefeated! LOLz Floyd Worship Money hence hes afraid and filled with fear .... while Manny Paquiao worship GOD hence he is un afraid ... So manny filled out and gained 45 pounds over 17 years?
I gained 15 pounds Of muscle in 7 months and I did not have a personal chef, a nutritionist, a strength and conditioning coach, and unlimited time in the gym.

Longer term (but less than 17 years) I added 30-35 pounds of muscle
