Life Of Julia, Obama Campaign's New Online Tool, Touts Pro-Women Policies

Obama Women

WASHINGTON -- As former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama vie for the crucial women's vote in the upcoming presidential election, the Obama campaign released an online tool called "The Life of Julia" on Thursday that walks users through the life of an average, middle-class woman, in hopes of showing how Obama's policies benefit her more than Romney's at every stage.

The website points out that when Julia is 17, Obama's Race to the Top program will help her get into a good college, while the budget plan authored by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), which Romney supports, cuts funding for public education. Julia will be able to focus on her career at the age of 27, because Obama's Affordable Care Act requires her employer to cover birth control and preventative care, while Romney supported the Blunt amendment, which could jeopardize that coverage.

The Life of Julia hits the Romney campaign on several issues, including Romney's unwillingness to say whether he would have signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, his plans to repeal health care reform and his plans to cut funding to Medicare, which disproportionately benefits women. The Obama campaign timed its release to coincide with Mitt Romney's trip to Virginia to campaign with Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), who controversially supported fetal personhood legislation and a mandatory ultrasound bill this year.

"Mitt Romney and Bob McDonnell have some explaining to do to American women about their extreme agendas: both would refuse to stand up for equal pay for equal work and take women's critical health care decisions out of their hands," the Obama campaign said in a statement. "Using this new online tool, moms can see what President Obama and Mitt Romney’s contrasting policies will mean for their daughters. Students and recent graduates can see what they will mean for them, their sisters and their friends. Working women and seniors can use this online tool to see what this election will mean for their ability to earn a living, support their families and retire comfortably."

In response, the Romney campaign criticized Obama's handling of women's economic issues.

“Each night, too many women go to sleep wondering if they can pay the mortgage, if they can afford to put food on the table, and if their children will have a job after graduating from college," said Amanda Henneberg, a Romney spokeswoman. "Nearly a million more women are out of work under President Obama while female poverty is at its highest level in nearly two decades. By all accounts, President Obama’s policies have failed women, like all Americans, and they deserve a president who will focus on getting America back on track.”

As a 22 year old woman, I am incensed by Obama's brash assumption that women are a) too inept to succeed without government intervention and b) too selfish to admit that by accepting his handouts we are choosing to pass along trillions more in debt to our children. Too bad Julia's story stops before she sees her children and grandchildren go through debilitating crises worse than even Greece could imagine.

obama's brash assumptions are what got him into office. it would be in women's best interest to get him back into office. like it or not, private sector jobs are dwindling, hence men's rapid decline in this country. men should not vote, as neither party has any interest in garnering their votes. barack has all but eliminated boys/men/father's from the equation, and republicans are eerily too keen on sending men to die in third world countries.

As not a 22 year old woman, I am incensed by people's brash assumptions that they can make claims about themselves which are blatantly untrue and transparently so through the very words they utter.

Ewwww, who wants to see a time line of the role the Federal Government played in your life from birth until death?

It's weird and creepy and sad.

So Obama will take care of all the girls. How nice. What about all the boys? Will he leave them starving in the streets? Man, if this isn't discrimination !

I think it escaped many of you that by the time Julia is 67, the caption still touts her care under Obama. You may not worry about President for Life Obama, but I find it chilling,

Yes, "Julia" sounds like your perfect Obamaite "TOOL" - LOL!

Are you serious? This is socialism....what, you all want to held by the cajones by the government?

When will you all wake up? This has to be the scariest "ad" I've ever seen. If I need the government to pay for my $10 birth control prescription, I might as well check myself into a home for losers. Better yet, why don't I just sit on my fat fanny forever, move back my parents, and quit work. Isn't that what all of this means?

The government couldn't find its collective fannies with both hands, I want them running my life?

The women's movement didn't do what they did so we can bow to the government or anyone else.

the only reason the women's movement is as strident today as it was back then is because of ppl like obama. the men in office are perhaps the biggest proponents of feminism. it'd be silly for any woman not to support him. women are pliable, more so than men. obama is doing his best to eliminate boys/men/fathers from the equation to amass as much government control as possible.

If the most powerful leader in the world thinks The Life of Julia is a great campaign ad, then I sure don't trust him to choose my healthcare system for me.

What they left out is that 'Julia' was a third trimester partial-birth abortion, who never grew up to be under the control of PopStar MESSiah's socialist dictatorship.

Political opinions aside, this new addition to the Obama campaign is pretty brilliant. The whole thing reads like a grown-up version of a children's book. It's concise and easy to understand. The illustrations themselves are very basic and contain very simplified color scheme. It's interesting to see Julia "grow" aesthetically. For being incredibly simplified she's a stylish girl/woman. She wears skinny jeans, cardigans, platforms, flats and modest heels. She sports bangs and a bob, even changes her hair color. Her face is portrayed in profile with no discernible features besides her nose which allows her to be every woman. And her position on the "page" is isolated; she stands alone, looking at the scenery which reads more like a challenge (doors, stairs, technology) than just a background. It's a great addition to the visual rhetoric of the Obama campaign. All of the graphics and logos this campaign has produced (for both elections) has done wonders to subtly reinforce the Obama's cool image. They tell us he's modern (I counted 3 Macs in The Life of Julia), he's smooth, and uncomplicated (textures like wood grain are implied with a few sleek lines). And by utilizing his brand of graphics to create The Life of Julia, he's moving his logo to become synonymous with women's issues as well. Smart move.

Do you work for the Obama campaign? This is pandering at it's worst. Even my (few) liberal friends think it's insulting.

I was giving my analysis of the visual rhetoric displayed in The Life of Julia. I'm incredibly intrigued at the way the Obama campaign handles its graphics, logos and website; their branding is definitely their strongest attribute and I think it definitely helps them appeal to a larger (and younger) audience.
Bottom line, every campaign churns out propaganda. I'm no more insulted by it than I am by most advertisements. I merely find it interesting in the context of the history of political visual culture.

I bet it's insulting to women. It assumes that women can't make it on their own.

I personally thought this was from a republican criticizing how the gov't is involved so deeply in everyone's lives. I was shocked to see I was on Obama's campaign page and it was supporting this reach into all aspects of one's lives. I wouldn't be surprised to see Romney use this against Obama. Will be interesting.

Exactly what I thought tundra599. At first, I thought it was a Republican ad, depicting how ridiculous the nanny state mentality is becoming in this country.

What Julia really needs to worry about is whether there will be any USA left by the time she is ready to enter high school. If things continue as they are, we will have become Greece long before she graduates.
Obama would have you believe that if you vote for him, you will never need to worry about anything. In fact, according to Nancy Pelosi, you can choose not to work if you wish, and the government will take care of all your needs. It's a good thing there are still some conservatives around who are willing to work to take care of all the liberals or there might be a real problem.

Obama's counting his chicks before they're hatched. How can anyone predict that after he got her into a good school, that she didn't make some unwise choices, like go to a frat party, suffer an alcohol overdose, and not even make it to middle age. Nobody's guaranteed tomorrow.
