An official video promoting the upcoming NATO summit in Chicago could have used some serious fact-checking before going public Thursday -- by Friday morning, the video was removed from YouTube.
Time Out Chicago's Frank Sennett blogged Thursday afternoon about the five-minute video, which makes it a mere 26 seconds before the errors begin.
"The leaders of the member nations of the organization created by the 1949 Washington Treaty will meet in the capital of Illinois this time," the video's voiceover proclaims of Chicago. (Take that, Springfield!)
The video proceeds to identify Chicago as "the city [President Obama] grew up in." (Where you at, Honolulu?! Obama didn't actually arrive in Chicago until 1985, two years after graduating from Columbia University in New York.)
Sennett points out that the Chicago Tribune founder did not actually build McCormick Place, where the bulk of the May 20-21 summit activities are set to take place.
And the mistakes don't stop there: Chicagoist notes that the video features "one of Donald Trump's famous towers" and Seward Johnson's Marilyn Monroe statue as among its architectural and artistic highlights. One would be hard-pressed to find too many Chicagoans who'd agree with those choices.
The video also features Lori Healey, NATO host committee leader, describing the summit's potential economic impact -- a figure a city-commissioned study estimated this week at $128 million. The Chicago Tribune points out that amount does not take into account the city's spending toward putting the summit on. University of Chicago economist Allen Sanderson told the paper that the study's figure is "a gross overestimate."
In response to criticism of the video, the NATO summit's host committee tweeted, "We have requested that the inaccuracies be corrected." The Chicago Tribune reports that the Springfield-dissing capital city slip-up has been removed from the video on NATOchannel.tv. As of late Thursday afternoon, the error still remained on YouTube, but the video was removed by Friday morning.
