Osama bin Laden Documents Released Online

Osama Bin Laden

On Wednesday, West Point's Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) released a "treasure trove" of documents recovered from Osama bin Laden's compound in the raid that killed that former al Qaeda leader last year.

The accompanying report, "Letters from Abbottabad: Bin Ladin Sidelined?" studies 17 declassified documents totaling 175 pages in Arabic and 197 pages in English, including letters and electronic correspondences dating from between September 2006 and April 2011. According to the CTC, the letters authored by al Qaeda leadership including Osama bin Laden largely focus on Muslims "suffering at the hands of his jihadi 'brothers.'"

One letter presumed to have been forwarded to bin Laden shows that the group Jaysh al-Islam's sought financial assistance to "support jihad," as well as legal advice. In a separate letter purportedly authored by bin Laden, the terrorist mastermind responds to the Arab Spring.

U.S. Homeland Security Advisor John Brennan announced on Monday that the bin Laden documents would be published online. In the report, the CTC describes how the documents were retrieved the night bin Laden was killed. "The professionals conducting this operation were trained to survey the site and collect any electronic media, papers, or pocket litter that might inform future operations," the report notes.

According to CNN, more than 6,000 documents were recovered from the computers, harddrives, and over 100 storage devices seized in the raid.

Osama bin Laden was killed last year in a U.S. Navy SEALS raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

WASHINGTON — In letters from his last hideout, Osama bin Laden fretted about dysfunction in his terrorist network and crumbling trust from Muslims he wished to incite against their government and the West.

A selection of documents seized in last year's raid on bin Laden's Pakistan house was posted online Thursday by the U.S. Army's Combating Terrorism Center. The documents show dark days for al-Qaida and its hunkered-down leader after years of attacks by the United States and what bin Laden saw as bumbling within his own organization and its terrorist allies.

"I plan to release a statement that we are starting a new phase to correct (the mistakes) we made," bin Laden wrote in 2010. "In doing so, we shall reclaim, God willing, the trust of a large segment of those who lost their trust in the jihadis."

Until the end, bin Laden remained focused on attacking Americans and coming up with plots, however improbable, to kill U.S. leaders. He wished especially to target airplanes carrying Gen. David Petraeus and even President Barack Obama, reasoning that an assassination would elevate an "utterly unprepared" Vice President Joe Biden into the presidency and plunge the U.S. into crisis.

But a U.S. analysts' report released along with bin Laden's correspondence describes him as upset over the inability of spinoff terrorist groups to win public support for their cause, their unsuccessful media campaigns and poorly planned plots that, in bin Laden's view, killed too many innocent Muslims.

Bin Laden adviser Adam Gadahn urged him to disassociate their organization from the acts of al-Qaida's spinoff operation in Iraq, known as AQI, and bin Laden told other terrorist groups not to repeat AQI's mistakes.

The correspondence includes letters by then-second-in-command Abu Yahya al-Libi, taking Pakistani offshoot Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan to task over its indiscriminate attacks on Muslims. The al-Qaida leadership "threatened to take public measures unless we see from you serious and immediate practical and clear steps towards reforming (your ways) and dissociating yourself from these vile mistakes that violate Islamic Law," al-Libi wrote.

And bin Laden warned the leader of Yemeni AQAP, Nasir al-Wuhayshi, against attempting a takeover of Yemen to establish an Islamic state, instead saying he should "refocus his efforts on attacking the United States."

Bin Laden also seemed uninterested in recognizing Somali-based al-Shabab when the group pledged loyalty to him because he thought its leaders were poor governors of the areas they controlled and were too strict with their administration of Islamic penalties, like cutting off the hands of thieves.

The U.S. said the letters reflect al-Qaida's relationship with Iran – a point of deep interest to the U.S. government – as "not one of alliance, but of indirect and unpleasant negotiations" over some al-Qaida terrorists and their families who were imprisoned in Iran.

Nothing in the papers that were released points directly to al-Qaida sympathizers in Pakistan's government, although presumably such references would have remained classified. Bin Laden described "trusted Pakistani brothers" but didn't identify any Pakistani government or military officials who might have been aware or complicit in his hiding in Abbottabad.

It wasn't immediately clear how many of bin Laden's documents the U.S. was still keeping secret. In a note published with the 175 pages in Arabic that were released Thursday, along with English translations, retired Gen. John Abizaid said they probably represent only a small fraction of materials taken from the compound in the U.S. raid that tracked down and killed bin Laden in May 2011. The U.S. said the documents span September 2006 to April 2011.

Bin Laden was proud of the security measures that kept his family safe for many years, the report said. It said bin Laden boasted that his family "adhered to such strict measures, precluding his children from playing outdoors without the supervision of an adult who could keep their voices down."

The report said the Special Forces troops in the bin Laden raid were trained to search the home afterward for thumb drives, printed documents and what it described as "pocket litter" that might produce leads to other terrorists. "The end of the raid in Abbottabad was the beginning of a massive analytical effort," it said.

It said the personal files showed that, during one of the most significant manhunts in history, bin Laden was out of touch with the day-to-day operations of various terrorist groups inspired by al-Qaida. He was "not in sync on the operational level with its so-called affiliates," researchers wrote. "Bin Laden enjoyed little control over either groups affiliated with al Qaida in name or so-called fellow travelers."

OTHER ITEMS FOUND AT BIN LADEN'S COMPOUND:

  • Marijuana

A stroll around the 20-foot-tall, barbed wire led CNN's Nic Robertson to discover a crop of marijuana plants just yards from the home. But whether or not bin Laden and his family were growing the weed for recreational purposes remains a mystery, and it has long been speculated that the Al Qaeda leader suffered from kidney failure, which would allow him to get a prescription for medical marijuana in many U.S. states.

  • Pornography

As Reuters is reporting, a "fairly extensive" stash of "modern, electronically recorded" pornography was found in the compound, according to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

  • 'Natural Viagra'

The discovery of Avena syrup -- a botanical product often used as "natural Viagra" -- at bin Laden's compound has raised questions about whether or not the Al Qaeda leader or his associates were trying to boost their libidos. Also known by the nickname "wild oats," Avena Sativa syrup has two potential uses: to increase sexual desire, and as artificial sweetener used for a sour stomach.

  • Diary

Navy SEALs reportedly swiped the terrorist's short journal from his Pakistani compound. The al Qaeda leader is said to have mused about mass murder, naming his number one target as President Obama, followed by U.S. military leaders including the defense secretary and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Interestingly, bin Laden noted that U.S. Vice President Joe Biden "was not an important target because that position has less weight."

  • No Internet Access

As the Washington Post is reporting, the compound lacked Internet access, so bin Laden would communicate though an "elaborate pass-the-buck" system by typing a message on his computer which would then be saved to a flash drive and given to a trusted courier, who would drive it to far-off Internet cafes and return with incoming e-mail.

  • Soft Drinks

Bin Laden may have hated the United States, but that didn't stop him from reportedly indulging in plenty of Coca-Cola and Pepsi -- products that are often associated with the Western commercialism the al Qaeda leader is said to have despised.

Does house-arrest really go better with Coca-Cola and Pepsi when only your youngest wife can stand being near you?

You rmoneyites can beleive what you want. The real truth is that jr bush was by far, hands down the most detrimental American in the history of our country. He should be tried(with cheney) for war crimes. But after 911 all of America was in shock that(what we considered to be ignorant barbarians) could actually outsmart us and carry out the attacks. But American NATIONALISM brought us together so few condemned his attack of iraq.We were all pissed at that time. The wmd rhetoric sucked us all in.If the wmd had been found jr bush would have looked like the saviour of our nation. But there never were wmd's found. That made jr look like an idiot. He took the same gamble as Barrack did going after obl except Barrack won the gamble and jr bush just drove our country to the brink of bankruptcy. And the (99%) of our country is still struggling to pay off the debt that jr bush started by chasing the wmd's that never existed. The tpubs are still trying to blame Barrack.WAKE UP TPUBS YOU BROUGHT US WHERE WE ARE TODAY! Give Barrack a good team for the next 4 years and let us all see what happens. If mitty wins in November, the middle and lower class might as well bend over and kiss our butts good bye!

And nothing here about how Bin Laden loved MSNBC and Keith Olberman and hated Fox News? Gee, I thought that actually tells us a lot about the liberals and the progressives. (Are we not supposed to talk about that on HP?)
02:26 PM on 05/04/2012
Why bother, his comments make each "entertainment" channel look equally bad. Even he knew Fox News was so slanted to one side, closed minded and would lie at the drop of a hat. Maybe that is something to be proud of and I guess being the least informed news watchers certainly will keep them from being associated with elitists. Good on ya.

Help me out here, "Dysfunctional Terrorists", isn't that redundant? If you're a "Terrorist" doesn't that mean by default you are dysfunctional??

Well this just about sums it up bin laden has been irrelevant for years, Just like President Bush said. He said he is no longer on top of the priority list. All his people broke away and went on their own, taking no orders from bin laden. bin laden was a broken no threat person, not worth wasting lives, time or money on. But obama could care less about time and money. Just his ego.

It is a great mercy for the world that most terrorists are dumber than a sackful of rocks. If they were intelligent, they would be a great deal more dangerous. They seem to have a primitive fascination with things that go "boom." This kills a lot of innocent people and accomplishes absolutely nothing when it comes to achieving what they want.

If they were smarter they would very quietly assassinate people who favor policies that are detrimental to their activities. No one in the Arab world seems to have a clue as to who holds the real power in the world today. The elected officials are merely the puppets of the military-industrial complex and the mega-corporations. The people they would be going after if they were smart would be the billionaires who control the mega-corporations and the politicians.

Here's to stupidity, may our enemies grow dumber every day!

There have been many vice presidents who were thougt to be incomptent, until they had to step into the shoes, Biden, I never thought he was the brightest bulb in the box, however, what you do as vice president, is not what you would do as President. Everyone thought that Andrew Johnson, was incomptent he wasn't Teddy Roosvelt, was too young, couldn't handle the presidency, Harry Truman was a Dunce, He Wasn't,even LBJ, well, he was ok: Gerald Ford, was preceived as silly, Yet he did a lot of Good, wouldn't have voted for him but he too suprised me and many others, So when Some idiot Terrorists, thinks that by taking out the President of the United States, he Forgets that over 200 years ago the process was in place to replace the Leader of this country, It would be very hard to cause a disruption, by killing 1 or more leaders of this country. we are so diversived as a country and so large. That as Japan, Timothy Mcvey, & Osama, learned, We are not a snake, we are like the Hydra we grow 1 or more heads. It won't work!

Huffington's repeated photo of the marihuana growing near Osama Bin Laden's compound is tedious and reveals a surprising lack of information about that part of the world.

In northern India and Pakistan, Cannabis grows wild in many areas. The first time I ever saw a plant was after I went to a small government Art Gallery in Amritsar, Northern India for an appraisal of some Kangra paintings. The director asked me about the marihuana problem in America. I knew absolutely nothing about the drug scene at that time and told him so.

He called one of the guards and spoke to him him Punjabi. About three minutes later the guard returned with a 6 foot plant which he laid across the Director's desk. " It grows wild in the back of the garden," I was informed.

Later I found out that hashish was legal ... and small pellets available everywhere where betel nut and paan were sold as after dinner digestive and breath aids. My sister-in-law's father was puffing an enormous hookah when I was introduced to him. I was speechless.

Thirty years ago in India, we had no restrictions on hashish ... and we had no drug problems or dealers until the Americans arrived on the scene. They brought crime and paranoia with them. Believe me, this picture is no biggie. I would be surprised if anyone in the compound knew it was there .... or cared.

Marihuana is a weed it will grow and does grow on ditch banks and other waste areas in many parts of the U.S. AND IT NEEDS TO BE MADE LEGAL! WE SPEND MORE ON THE DRUG WAR? THAN ON MOST EVERY THING ELSE!
04:31 PM on 05/04/2012
Right on! Now more people have to be vocal about it. "Ruderalis" ... which is a smaller, much less potent variety of Cannabis grows all across the USA. Why more people have thumbed their noses at our silly laws and pointed this out, I don't know.

Maybe the spectre of helmeted SWAT officers, armed to the teeth ... directing their henchmen to asiduously pull each weed out by its root, while cordoning off hugh sections of our highways is why. It's actually quite funny.

This sturdy and enormously valuable plant ( in terms of providing an alternative to the pulp and paper industry which is destroying our forests ... in terms of the incredibly nutritious seeds as well as its unparalleled efficacy in the treatment of glaucoma and severe nausea ...) ... this remarkable little plant will survive. Hopefully long enough for this silly country's law makers to wake up and smell the coffee .... or inhale a few fragrant whiffs.

Even a master terrorist leader had his problems with Al Qaeda's leadership, and the organization of itself. It looks like even Osama bin Laden had bad days, besides being shot to death.... Who know's he might have welcome his death, for his escape from the world?

Reagan admired Bin Laden's group, lauded them as freedom fighters. (course they were being used to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan at the time)
05:55 AM on 05/04/2012
The story is that the USA financed the building of all those caves for those "freedom fighters" to hide in while fighting the USSR in what was termed at the time, "Russia's VietNam."

That network caves, which the USA paid for, were what OBL used to hide while he waged his jihad against us.

What I find very amusing is that OBL determined that the vice president wasn't a good target as his position was meaningless. Shows how much he really knew of our government. When the president is incapacitated or killed, the VP steps into the presidential office.
05:45 PM on 05/04/2012
Bin Laden was part of this group,

Upon becoming President, Reagan moved quickly to undermine Soviet efforts to subdue the government of Afghanistan, which the Soviet Army had invaded in 1979.

Islamic mujahideen guerrillas were covertly supported and trained, and backed in their jihad against the occupying Soviets by the CIA. The agency sent billions of dollars in military aid to the guerrillas, in what came to be known as "Charlie Wilson's War".

Reagan praised the mujahadeen as freedom fighters battling an evil empire, stating, "To watch the courageous Afghan freedom fighters battle modern arsenals with simple hand-held weapons is an inspiration to those who love freedom. Their courage teaches us a great lesson—that there are things in this world worth defending. To the Afghan people, I say on behalf of all Americans that we admire your heroism, your devotion to freedom, and your relentless struggle against your oppressors." (March 21, 1983

Let's see-----a murderous despot bemoaning the fact that his followers who will kill and die for him aren't as strong as they once were.

A hypocrite who believes "his" way is right for everyone else, but that he is above following his own rules.

Sound familiar? Its a generic psychological profile (change the ideology to fit the time and place) of a hundred of history's most evil.

I fear for Human DNA because it appears that this profile often comes with a higher than average amount of charisma.

OBL is a very religious muslim, who disparages the US for its strictly monetary motives above the poor natives, in a main case given, Egypt. So, it is religion again, that motivates war to maintain a way of life, and we in this country buy into it as well. Because we are not told the truth about the money, but rather a story of chasing the 'Terrorists', which we help to create.

OBL is about OBL. Religion is the "tool" he uses. Because after all, if God told you to kill, it must be okay. There is no doubt that because of this thinking, religious fanatics are the most dangerous people throughout history.

Its not about God to them, its about POWER on Earth/
