GREENSBORO, N.C., May 4 (Reuters) - A political adviser was told to butt out when he warned former U.S. Senator John Edwards that pursuing an extramarital affair with a videographer would sink his presidential ambitions, he testified at Edwards' campaign finance trial on Friday.

Peter Scher, who first worked with Edwards when he was the Democrats' 2004 vice presidential nominee, said the politician denied having a sexual relationship with Rielle Hunter when Scher broached the subject in September 2006.

At the time, Edwards had not yet declared his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

"I told him if it was true that he was having an affair with Ms. Hunter, he should not run for president," Scher testified as the second week of Edwards' trial neared its end. "If it was true, eventually it would come out and it would destroy his political career."

Scher said he again confronted Edwards about the affair in a heated phone call after learning Hunter was still traveling with the former senator from North Carolina despite staff concerns. This time, Edwards responded that he didn't need a babysitter and told Scher to back off, the former adviser recalled.

"He told me to go fuck myself," said Scher, who stopped serving as an outside adviser to Edwards at that point.

Edwards, 58, is standing trial in Greensboro on six counts of election law violations. Federal prosecutors accuse him of directing an aide to solicit more than $900,000 in illegal campaign contributions in order to conceal his relationship with Hunter during his failed 2008 presidential bid.

The government says Edwards, at the time married with three children, knew revelations about his affair and Hunter's resulting pregnancy would ruin his image and doom his campaign.

The defense argues Edwards knew nothing about the secret payments, which his attorneys say were intended to hide Edwards' pregnant mistress from his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, and not to influence the election.

The wealthy heiress who supplied the bulk of the money did not know at the time that it was being used to help provide for Hunter, according to a close friend's testimony on Friday.

But Bryan Huffman, an interior decorator, said 101-year-old Rachel "Bunny" Mellon wasn't particularly upset when she later learned some of the payments went toward Hunter's living expenses and medical care.

Huffman said Mellon badly wanted to see Edwards elected president and believed she was helping him with an expense unrelated to the campaign.

She wrote checks totaling $725,000 in Huffman's name, and he forwarded the money to Edwards' aide Andrew Young and his wife, who deposited the checks into their personal accounts.

The defense says Andrew Young, who has immunity, arranged the financial scheme and used much of the money for his own benefit.

Mellon didn't condemn Edwards for having an affair after the truth was revealed, Huffman said. However, "she thought that maybe you should pay for your girlfriend yourself," he said. (Editing by Paul Thomasch and Xavier Briand)

I've been in love, and I've been deeply infatuated and I've made stupid choices because of my feelings. My stupid choices were of the self-destructive sort (this might ruin my chances of being president type of thing, though of course for me the destruction was of a much smaller magnitude), but they were never of the destroy-my-family sort. To me, sacrificing your own interests for an infatuation is stupid, but not immoral. Sacrificing your family's interests is selfish and wrong.

Is he on trial for having an affair or what? If that was the case,90% of men and even women should be on trial. I mean,Newt hasnt had his day in court yet.

To quote my daddy, Edwards is a low-down, scum sucking rat. The arrogance he showed by campaigning for the Democratic Presidential Nomination while carrying on an affair in 2008 is truly astounding. Quite frankly, this makes Bill Clinton's dalliance with Lewinski look like a platonic relationship.

How about Newt impeaching Clinton for something himself was doing at the very time he was impeaching him?

You have to wonder if, in retrospect, Edwards wishes he had followed his own advice and just fu*ked himself instead of Rielle Hunter? He is a pure scum ball for how he treated his terminally ill wife. If he used campaign contributions to try to cover up the affair, then he is also a criminal.

So, when Eliz appeared with him to disclose her cancer had returned (March 22(?) 2007), did she know about his affair and did she collaborate in a decision to hide the affair from the public eye? Trying to discern time line....

I detest Edward's behavior and treatment of this wife just as much as the next person but his crime in a legal since is no different from how any man would have handled the same situation. He had an affair and he tried to cover it up (Although I think the average man would be careful enough not to have a child). So in that context, should he go to jail? In my opinion, no. But Edwards lost his sense and used campaign funds to cover it up. That lack of judgement is mind-blowing; this is why I'm so glad he didn't win the Primary. I mean if his personal decision making is this poor, what would he have done in office?

I feel the same way. He was a cad, and his girlfriend was whatever the word for a female cad is. Regarding him going to jail for using this money to support his sweetie, it looks like the money was a gift to Andrew Young and his wife, and they used $700,000 of it to build their "dream home" so Edwards is off the hook and slips away free for any wrong doing.

I laugh at all this mess he said she said, he did she did. Such justice to wash his dirty laundry in public. I bet Elizabeth is watching the whole thing with a smirk of laughter.

I bet she's not. Partly because I'm an atheist and the idea of anyone "watching" us from beyond seems absurd to me... but also because IF there is an afterlife I doubt that someone would carry their earth-bound grief and pain with them... must less "smirk" about it. I mean, in most religions isn't the afterlife free of earthly concerns and aren't the dead compassionate about the living?

I guess all of that just really means that I find it somewhat disturbing that anyone would find this pathetic, personal and all-too-human story something to laugh or smirk about. Seems like a huge handful of pain to me. And if nothing else, Elizabeth Edwards was a woman full of wisdom, compassion and dignity. I doubt she did much smirking during her life time.

DUDE! Lighten up! Got your shorts tied up a little too tight today? Its all good dude. I never said Elizabeth was anything below stellar. I laud her for not beating the tar out of the guy while alive. I still think a little smirking goes on in the after life...its called Karma.

I don't see the campaign fund fraud, just abuse of a wealthy lady who just wanted to help him with his personal needs. I'm not sure why the government brought this case to trial. Mr. Edwards should be more ashamed for yet another selfish act, using her and everyone he could for his personal gain. He should have been charged in civil court for something. He's a creep and I think karma will unltimately get him. It's getting him now, he gets to support selfish, scary, wierd, ugly Reille forever, this time on his dime. He earned her. The two can live happily ever after (not). How do they? Thank goodness he was found out before he could get elected to anything. I don't know how in any way he redeems himself to be anything other than a selfish creep that he's turned out to be. Sadly, I don't think he's seen the last of the karma he's earned. If if he gets through this trial without a conviction I don't see how his life gets better. Hopefully, his children won't have anymore grief, they've had enough.

You are mischaracterizing the Mormon. Following the equal mark should be "very bad for the US", because that is what the election of Mitt Romney as President would be for our country.

No because all our lives would have been different and much better If Kerry had won and I am sure that Johns life also would of been much better. It looks to me that even though he screwed up there haven't been any other women popping up or other skeletons in his closet. The meeting of this Rielle woman at that specific time at that hotel would of never happened. Just like if Gore had been President as he should of been this country and the world of been a million times better or should I say 1 trillion times better.

"She wrote checks totaling $725,000 in Huffman's name, and he forwarded the money to Edwards' aide Andrew Young and his wife, who deposited the checks into their personal accounts."

So Young is guilty of money laundering on a MAFIA scale, but is given immunity so he will say anything to get Edwards.
