James Brown Is 'Main Culprit' Behind 4 Detroit Women Killed And Left In Cars, Police Say

Clayton Carter

By ED WHITE   05/05/12 06:03 PM ET  AP

DETROIT -- Four women were killed outside of Detroit but their bodies were abandoned inside cars that were left in the city, authorities said Saturday as they filed the first charges since the victims were discovered more than four months ago.

Police Chief Ralph Godbee described James Brown as the "main culprit," but Brown was not charged with killing the women. The Sterling Heights man was arraigned on charges of moving the bodies and arson, and bond was set at $1 million.

Demesha Hunt and Renisha Landers, who were cousins, were found in the trunk of a car in Detroit on Dec. 19. On Dec. 25, the bodies of friends Natasha Curtis and Vernithea McCrary were found in a burning car. All were in their 20s, and three of the women had placed online ads for adult dating services.

Godbee suggested that the only barrier to murder charges is deciding where to file them. He believes the women were not killed in Detroit and possibly not in Wayne County. The Wayne County prosecutor's office handles crimes committed in Detroit.

The office's spokeswoman, Maria Miller, declined to comment.

"We're not anybody's dumping ground for homicides. ... We feel very confident that we've closed this case," Godbee said at a news conference.

The 24-year-old Brown, who was arrested on Tuesday, briefly appeared in 36th District Court via video from jail. He asked for a court-appointed lawyer. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each of the four charges.

Landers' friends and family wore shirts emblazoned with her image in court.

Outside court, Leon Mims, one of Landers' uncles, said the high bond likely would keep Brown behind bars.

"Hopefully, the house of cards will start falling. ... We'll get to the murder part of this," Mims told reporters.

If we could get over our rank hypocrisy & puritanical vapors over "the world's oldest profession", women who want to do sex work could have clean, safe, protected environments in which to do their work, and these sorts of stories would disappear from the headlines.

I don't really agree with anyone in this line of work, but then I don't agree with many things. I do think you have a valid point, though. Maybe it's time we take a look at some alternatives.

Yes that is the only place in the country where people are killed. Phiily is actually leading the country at the end of 2011 in murder per capita.

Not close
FBI Data for 2010 shows Detroit with homicide rate of 34.5 per 100k population.
Philly is much lower at 19.6. Philly may have a higher total number of homicides as it it has a much higher population.

What??!!! Have the world gone mad??!! Women, please!! Stop this on-line dating nonsense if you do not have proper protection!!!! You need a male friend or relative to be around when you meet these jokers! You should [also] have some type of weapon that will render any attacker "useless"!!! I am telling you this because I have put "predators" behind bars and they will not stop at your "No".

Why do women continue to put themselves in such dire jeopardy? No matter how many horror stories they may hear, loneliness seems to be the primary reason. Fortunately though, more and more women are beginning to discover the risks are far from worth it.

In frequenting adult dating sites, they're subjecting themselves to rape, abduction, human trafficking and murder.

Just as it was in the 1920s, the Prohibition Act didn't last because the bottom line was 'supply and demand'. History's merely repeating itself, with the market for adult dating sites.

Too bad there isn't a national program to put all males' DNA into a national database, and to tattoo,ID, CHIP, and curfew males to stop/reduce the murders of the other half of the population...

My thoughts and prayers go out to these famiies. The need to close that site down that has people on there meeting for sex, the same as when Craigslist was doing the same thing. You don't go and meet people for sex, just not a good idea at all, especially for women. It looks like this isn't the man that killed them, so where are the men that killed these women?

I first thought the man in the photo was James Brown. It wasn't until later, when I looked up again, I read the Tee Shirt he was holding up, which appears to be the victims that I realized he most likely wasn't James Brown.

I wish the Huff would put some identifying info. under the photographs. S h e e e s h .

Most likely James Brown moved the bodies of the women because the original place of murder has a better chance to link him to the women. Most likely he lives /works in the area, so he moved the car and girls into a city district as his way to throw off police.

The police believe he murdered them in the suburbs and dumped the bodies in Detroit. Hence the quote from the police chief about not being a dumping ground.

I don't think it was a traditional dating site, but rather, a sex for money "dating" site.

Sad, nevertheless.

I have to disagree with your opinion of online dating. The reputable sites are safe and no personal information is given without consent. I met my husband on eHarmony and he is the greatest. We were matched perfectly.
