Obama, Mitt Romney Projecting Mirror Image

Mitt Romney Obama

CONNIE CASS   05/06/12 09:10 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — He's a smug, Harvard-trained elitist who doesn't get how regular Americans are struggling these days. More extreme than he lets on, he's keeping his true agenda hidden until after Election Day. He's clueless about fixing the economy, over his head on foreign policy. Who is he?

Your answer will help decide the next president.

Is it Barack Obama, as seen by Mitt Romney? Or Romney, the way Obama depicts him? For all their liberal versus conservative differences, when the two presidential contenders describe each other, they sound like they're ragging on the same flawed guy. Or mirror images of that guy.

Will voters prefer the man waving with his left hand or his right?

Blame it on two cautious candidates with more traits in common than their disparate early biographies would suggest.

No Drama Obama is panned as professorial and aloof. Romney is deemed boring when he's not being awkward.

Distrusted as too moderate within his own party, each is demonized as a radical by the other side. They don't get specific about the tough stuff, like budget cuts or taxes, that would invite more precisely calibrated negative ads.

Add a presidential contest buried beneath a single issue, the economy, and original lines of attack are scarce. The candidates take jabs anyway.

"They're trying to define each other. That's what it's all about," said Ken Duberstein, chief of staff to President Ronald Reagan. "They're throwing out different characterizations to see which one resonates."

With quickie Internet videos and instant comebacks via Twitter, "the attack and counterattack is happening in real time," said political communications expert Kathleen Hall Jamieson. "Campaigns are working to make sure nothing is missed."

Attacks big or small get batted back, even if the response amounts to "I know you are, what am I?"

Democrats accuse Republicans of a "war on women," Romney's campaign notes rising female unemployment during the Obama years.

The Obama camp jokes about Romney's dog riding on the roof of the family car; Republicans respond that Obama ate dog meat as a boy in Indonesia.

Both candidates are slammed as:

"Out of touch" with ordinary Americans.

Obama: Cloistered in the White House. Hangs out with celebrities, acting "cool." Doesn't understand the real world because "he spent too much time at Harvard," according to Romney, who earned two Harvard degrees himself.

Romney: Grew up wealthy, with a governor for a father. Worth $200 million or more. He's the kind of guy who had a Swiss bank account and wants a car elevator for his beach house, the Democrats note.

___

Bad for the middle class.

Obama: Failed to deliver on his promises to help Americans "struggling to find good jobs and make ends meet," the Romney camp says. Median household income is down, unemployment up since he took office.

Romney: Wants to reduce taxes on the wealthy while devastating Medicare and cutting education, health care and other programs the middle class need, Democrats charge. Obama says that amounts to "social Darwinism."

___

Suspiciously secretive.

Obama: Believing his microphone off, assured the Russian president he would have "more flexibility" after Election Day. Obama will reveal "his true positions only after the election is over," Romney says. Republicans predict he would tack left on the environment, spending, gay rights and other issues.

Romney: Told campaign donors of plans to cut or eliminate the housing and education agencies as well as others – ideas he hasn't disclosed publicly. "What's Mitt hiding?" Democrats ask, demanding more about his personal tax returns and investments, too.

___

Too extreme.

Obama: Hopes to create "a European-style social welfare state," Romney says, and "put free enterprise on trial." Endorsing Romney, Newt Gingrich called Obama "the most radical, leftist president in American history."

Romney: Referred to himself as "severely conservative." He's "extreme on women's issues," Democrats contend. Obama places him to the right of Reagan and suggests he's akin to Barry Goldwater.

___

Unable to fix the economy.

Obama: Can't get the jobless rate below 8 percent. He "delayed the recovery and made it anemic," according to Romney, who says Obama lacks the private sector experience necessary to understand the economy.

Romney: As a venture capitalist, laid off workers and shipped jobs to Mexico, the Obama campaign says. Also created Massachusetts jobs more slowly than other governors of the time, Democrats note.

___

Not up to foreign policy.

Obama: Too weak to stand up to China or Russia or to stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb, and too eager to apologize for the United States, Romney charges.

Romney: Likely to stumble into another misguided war, according to Vice President Joe Biden. Wouldn't have had the guts to send Navy SEALs into Pakistan to get Osama bin Laden, the Obama campaign suggests.

Obama is an out-of-control president spending taxpayers money until we are debt up to our eyeballs. He is clearly out of touch with the country as we reel in a deep recession along with economic indicators that prove we are in a spiral down--very troubling. He has lived like a king the past three years mounting up multiple millions of dollars in private vacations alone on the taxpayers dime. His Obamacare has been predicted to bankrupt our country in a very short time--it is unaffordable. One of his mandates he "rammed" down the throats of the legislators, not giving them time to even read about it. He is constantly hobnobbing with celebrities, going on late night talk shows, and now flying around the countries "romancing" the students votes, promising help with their student loans. Be careful students, there are always strings attached with such grand promises. It is clearly time to vote for a new president with the credentials to lead us away from BIG government and back into a balanced budget--for the first time in four years!!

Another look at your assertion. Obama has tried to put money back in the hands of the midde class to stop their steady drop into poverty. with money in the hands of the middle class means they spend money and that creates demand which creates jobs. Continuing with tax relief for the rich while stripping support for the poor and middle class is what got us here to begin with. Obamacare (Romneycare) is a republican watered down version of what our healthcare should be. Even watered down it will reduce insurance premiums and eliminate the often used healthcare solution of going to the emergency room for tax payer paid treatments and in the long run will help produce a generation of healthier people reducing further the amount of money spent on insurance.

Your depiction of his life is pretty funny because Bush has the record for the number of vacations and he was always entertaining celebs as most other presidents have done.

Are you against improving the chances to get more people into college by continuing with a long run program of reduced interest rates? I remember back in the 60's receiving the same type of lone.

What exactly are the credentials of your pick and exactly how would they be used. Because Romney has only indicated he will follow what Bush did. Exactly how is that a help to this country?

Obama has passed three more job killing free trade deals. Obama used taxpayer money to train workers in Asia to take US jobs offshored (see USAID). Obama bailed out GM which has allowed GM to continue offshoring jobs to communist China!

And again and again Obama has pushed for amnesty for illegal labor. Notice you will NEVER hear Obama propose mandatory E-verify.

And Obamacare?! That is a corporatist dream come true. Does nothing to lower costs but forces us to buy.

Better the devil you know. Obama isn't perfect ,but you know him and he will try to help the ordinary people.. Romney is ready to crush the average people with '' austerity for the middle class ,tax cuts for the rich '' policies . It will be a nightmare.

Obama has been a disaster. Housing prices still falling. Grocery prices rising. Gas has dropped slightly, but is still well over $3.50/gallon. No jobs. And have you tried to get a housing loan? My son did - it took 4 months and documentation of everything in the world to get a loan. Dodd-Frank has wreaked havoc on whatever was left of the housing market.

And you want 4 more years of that?

America is the only western country with 2.2 % growth (Germany 0.8% growth ) .The majority of the western countries are back into recession . (UK ,with a conservative goverment went back into recession last week ) The stimulus package was a success (8.1% unemployment and 2.2% growth ) .Learn the facts . In Europe the situation is terrible.

Obama is not responsible for the housing bubble, grocery prices or gas prices. Recession traditionally take about 3 years to resolve but we haven't been through a recession this deep in modern times. It's going to take time yet you expect this president to do the impossible. He is not the one that bailed out the banks without some control as to how that money would be used....that was Bush. Banks are not lending so do you think the federal government take over? That is what republicans call socialism.

Back to reality. All the president can do is try and put out programs that put money back into the middle class. He can't actually create jobs, or lower rates and prices.

I find myself struggling with how, exactly, Obama has helped ordinary people.  I like the two improvements to health care - coverage for pre-existing conditions and coverage for students until the age of 26 - but of course, we do pay for our insurance, so the latter is probably more advantageous to the insurance company than to consumers.  Now, helping people retain their homes during the mortgage crisis would be an amazing accomplishment...except that HAMP failed.  And it failed because Tim Geithner attached so many arcane rules to the use of HAMP money that banks couldn't figure out how to access it, so it sits beneath Geithner's flabby haunches as we speak.  Same with funds for small business.  Now, the 6 bankers who sacked America and defrauded the world made out phenomenally well during this Administration when conventional wisdom would suggest they should be in jail.  The wealthy got an extension of their tax break for no reason that anyone can figure... Seriously, can you help me out here?

..and that is why you don't just vote for the lesser of two evils. You know when you choose the lesser of two evils? When you stand in line of your cafeteria and both options look like undesirable schlop-food and you got to decide between choosing either one or going hungry. That is not how you pick the president!...and even in those times were it was just the choice between two gross meal options l often times found it more rewarding to just skip. A president you ought to look up to not vote in with a funny feeling in your gut. But as long as you do not set a higher standard for your own life you won't set it for politicians. If you can't relate to them, they surely won't be able to relate to you either.

Standing for Fairness for All

The author of this article had to do a lot of stretching to argue that two completely opposite people are basically the same.

Obama is connected to the needs of the people. Romney clearly is not. Obama's steady-at-the-helm leadership is exactly what the people need. Romney's flip-flopping leaves everyone confused as to what he would say next with each new day.

With domestic policies, Obama has fought for the middle class. (Obamacare, DREAM Act, Payroll Tax reduction; Job Act). Romney has consistently fought for the 1%. (Ryan Plan)

With foreign policy, Obama speaks softly, but carries a big stick--negotiating as long as diplomacy is an option, and then hitting hard (Bin Laden) when necessary. Romney speaks loudly (attack Iran) and actually dares to do nothing (don't go after Bin Laden).

Well the images of Obama and Romney are not the same because images are projected from one's words and actions.

Obama is connected to people; Romney is awkward.
Obama is cool and decisive in a crisis; Romeny is indecisive and defers to his puppet masters.
Obama is intelligent, thorough, and consistent. Romney spews misstatements and then retracts and flip-flops within days and sometimes within hours.

Romney may want to project a different image, but today's toy is not an etch a sketch. It is an I-pad with a record of his words and deeds.

Romney may try to

Obama has demonstrated repeatedly that he doesn't give a rat's patootie in hades about American people actually working. He has destroyed the American dream by his policies. If you can't work, you can't own a home, send your children to college, even buy a used car.

Nancy Pelosi stated that food stamps are a badge of honor. Really? It used to be shameful to have to take handouts. Now it's expected under Obama?

I guess you have four choices:
(1) vote for 3rd party and waste a vote because the candidate cannot possibly amass the delegates or votes to win.
(2) vote for Romney whose intent is to make rich richer and the 99% poorer
(3) move to Canada which has a stronger economy and better social programs.
(4) vote Obama who has produced 19 straight months of job growth and has announced more manufacturing jobs being created; return of multiple bids on homes in some areas; record breaking stock market numbers.

This is just a continuation of the "both sides" meme that many in the media use to show that they are unbiased. It can also be used to weaken the stronger candidate by making them seem similar to someone not as good.

For me there IS a stark difference between the two.

Obama wants to raise taxes on the wealthy to pay down the debt.

Romney wants more tax breaks for the wealthy, and a 60% tax increase for those making $20,000 a year or less.

http://www.aarp.org/politics-society/government-elections/news-01-2012/us-romney-tax-plan.html

One is trying to move the country out of a recession.

One is working to enrich the rich, and recessions hold down wages.

If average Americans can't tell the difference, they're either more prejudiced than I thought, or more gullible than I had hoped.

"Balanced" reporting does not mean giving equal time to the mantras of the right... If a journalist has no insight to add to an issue, and merely reports what both sides are saying, he or she should get a job as a typist and leave the real reporting to those with a clue...

The perception presented isn't the issue.
It's the honest to goodness qualities the candidate can claim as his own.
President Obama has a lengthy list of voter approved qualities.
Mitt Romney has a list of qualities he tries to convey, unconvincingly, but a short list of sincere personal qualities.
The media will be awash in ads telling us lies about both men.
What we know to be true will be the most important gauge.

Jimmy Carter said the same thing a few days ago with the caveat that they are quite similar IF Mitt Romney will govern as President the same way he governed MA rather that the way Mitt has said he will in the tea party primaries.

That's a big IF for conservatives, independents and liberals.

I don't think liberals will take a chance on him reverting back to Blue Mitt.
I don't think tea partiers will take a chance on him staying Red Mitt.
I don't think independents (former Republicans and a few Blue Dogs) believe anything Purple Mitt says.

As Santorum pointed out, the two have similar voting records. What it really comes down to, do you support the GOP policy of going back to the Bush policies, or moving forward and continuing to push the Republican policies.
