Blueseed, World's First Startup Ship, Gains Steam

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 05/07/2012 1:01 pm Updated: 05/07/2012 10:19 pm

The world's first floating startup community is gaining steam.

Blueseed, a company that wants to house entrepreneurs aboard a vessel anchored near Silicon Valley, has announced that it will set sail before 2014. Nearly 150 technology startups have said they're interested in building businesses on the high seas, according to a report recently released by Blueseed.

The idea behind Blueseed is to provide a visa-free locale where foreign entrepreneurs can create technology companies that utilize resources in Silicon Valley without having to deal with the cumbersome process of obtaining a U.S. visa.

Rent aboard the ship will cost around $1,600 a month plus the equity stakes that Blueseed takes in each resident business.

"The world's best entrepreneurs should be able to gather and collaborate in one place, and not be limited by antiquated work visa restrictions," Blueseed's site says.

The startup world has called upon the U.S. government in recent years to reform its immigration laws in a way that makes it easier for foreign entrepreneurs to build businesses in America. Yet such efforts have largely failed, as broader immigration debates in Congress have roiled legislation that would create a so-called "startup visa."

According to Blueseed's recent survey, 25 percent of the people considering the program said that a "critical" reason for their interest in Blueseed is it provides an "alternative to having to get U.S. work visas" for company founders.

Yet, surprisingly, 21 percent of respondents said that U.S. work visas were "not important." At the same time, 53 percent described the environment on the ship as a "critical" reason for their interest, and 27.5 percent said the "coolness factor" and the ability to derive fame and press from the experience was critical.

To stay true to its original mission, Blueseed may want do some extra vetting of its applicants to ensure that its inaugural class of maritime entrepreneurs is actually in need of an alternative to a visa, rather than just seeking some extra exposure.

The first crime committed by a resident of this ship against the US and they'll find the Coast Guard and/or Navy paying them a visit. International waters is hardly a safe haven for criminals when they are just a dozen miles off the coast.

Good try. They will find they need Marines to repel boarders, a Navy to provide ocean defense, and will create an Army and Air Force in the name of projecting influence abroad to discourage attack. They will need a Constitution and taxing authority and have to debate the Federalists non-Federalists positions.

Eventually, immigration regulations and visas will come along and nothing will have changed.

Exactly. The premise that they are 'protected' by being in international waters is exactly the opposite. It won't take much authority to be given by somebody in the US government to seize a ship anchored just off the coast of what would be illegal immigrants and tax dodgers and have them towed to port and then deported back to their home countries.

It's sad that our government chases away brains and innovation.

If we were smart, we'd allow all the smart people of the world to come to America and easily start their own businesses because at the end of the day, it's businesses that HIRE people.

If it wasn't for individuals who take the risk to turn their ideas into a reality, we would still be living as cavemen/hunter/gatherers.

Our quality of life as a species has gone up thanks to the entrepreneurs who risked their own capital and time, to offer us valuable goods and services that make our lives better.

I say, the more entrepreneurs the better! Bring it on!

Why don't they start businesses in their own countries? There are more than enough hogs at the feeding trough as it is. Tax dodgers haven on the water.

Heaven forbid should we have people invent new products and technologies that improve the quality of our lives... What a horror!

Work visas are not difficult to obtain. It is even easier for the corporate to obtain work visas for their employees.. Their reasons are BS.

If they stay in international waters there is not taxing the business that operate from boat. Letyou all think about that!

Well, everything on the mainland is underwater... maybe a boat isn't such a bad idea!

Will the business taxes benefit the US or be divided among different countries?

In this case different countries. Any income earned would be taxed by the countries that the people report their income to. Only Americans working on the ship would pay US taxes. Would not have business taxes, that are not income, since no country would have the right to tax the businesses, until they have a physical location in that country. Could make the US expand the borders to 300 miles like most other countries have, and that we do not reconize.
01:25 AM on 05/09/2012
You should be asking: "Will the businesses benefit the U.S. consumer?"

The answer is: "Yes".
10:53 AM on 05/09/2012
No, that is your question. I asked exactly what I wanted to ask. But your question is a very good one.

So they would land in San Francisco. Then be ferried out to the ship by ferry or helicopter. The main thing they would need would be lots of broadband media access. Food and drink would be brought in by boat. Boy, I would like that Red Bull contract. Being 12 miles out you can have a casino and bar. Should be able to do it with a purchased luxury cruseship. Would you really need to build a new ship or just convert one to have several floors to be offices?

"ship of fools" it'll bring a new meaning to "piracy" on the high or low seas. honestly they'll all steal, some call it borrowing but I've never gotten a residual check from anyone who "borrowed" something from me, at any rate they'll all steal from each other and in the end it all looks like tv same old same old.
