Cardboard Comfort?: New Recyclable Paperpedic Bed

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 05/07/2012 3:47 pm Updated: 05/08/2012 10:37 am

It seems that the initiative for green products is all over these days -- everywhere from our water bottles to our thermostats. Now there’s even a green bed named the Paperpedic, a 100 percent recyclable cardboard bed.

The Paperpedic is made by Australia-based Karton Group, which offers an entire line of cardboard furniture. Though many might dismiss the strength of a bed made of cardboard, Karton claims that the strong cardboard base can hold up to 10 people, or a little under a ton. But a new video released by Karton shows that they may have underestimated the power of the Paperpedic. In the video, the bed is able to hold 22 people, or a little under two tons.

The bed can be outfitted with cardboard drawers (sold separately) and can easily be morphed from a single bed to a double, queen or king-sized bed in a matter of minutes. Karton even offers a cardboard bedside table.

The Paperpedic retails for $188.

"This is pretty cool! Not sure why we'd need it to hold 2 tons, but it's amazing that it does! I bet this would be very popular in the college community. The built in drawers are fantastic! Great for kids too; why not go for bunk-beds; I would definitely get one! All that jumping up and down that kids do; it may actually withstand all that abuse!"

Actually, that's pretty slick, especially if it stores easily.

You get all the support of a traditional bed, a fraction of the weight, and the price is 50% of a comparable traditional frame and box springs set. As an added bonus it will scale, meaning it goes from single to king sizes when assembled.

This could be a perfect replacement for a day bed, second bed.

$188 for a slab of cardboard? I'll just stick to having my bed sit on the box frame, which sits directly on the floor. Works for me.
