iOS 5.1.1 Update For iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Available For Download Now

New Ios

Apple has released the latest version of its iOS operating system for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, available for download for your Apple device right now.

The update is a relatively minor one, mostly addressing annoying bugs and fixes. Here's what you'll get with iOS 5.1.1:

  • Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
  • Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
  • Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
  • Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
  • Fixes an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase

Again, it's a small update, but it's ready for your download and we thought you'd like to know.

iOS 5.1.1 is the first update since the release of the new iPad, and also the first update following the March release of iOS 5.1, the long awaited iOS refresher that finally addressed the battery issues that many iPhone owners had reported in late 2011. Given the consumer silence on that front, iOS 5.1 appears to have squashed the battery-eating bug.

This might also be one of the final updates to iOS before Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in June, where the company has traditionally introduced its new edition of iOS each year. iOS 6 is widely expected to be one of the stars of this year's WWDC, though details on what Apple has in store are scant. (One guess/desperate hope: Voice navigation for turn-by-turn navigation in Maps).

If you already have iOS 5, and you're updating your iOS -- and you should, as these updates both add features and enhance your device's security -- you can do so without connecting your device to the computer. Just open up "Settings" and then go into "General," and then go into "Software Update," and you should see iOS 5.1.1 waiting for you. If you're connected to a Wi-Fi network and have sufficient battery life, you can go ahead and download and enjoy the delight of "improved reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut" (FINALLY!).

Below, check out a step-by-step guide (with super handy screenshots!) for how you can update your iOS straight from your Apple device, no cord necessary.

Loading Slideshow...
  • Go to "Settings"

First, touch the "Settings" icon on your home screen.

  • Go To "General"

Head into the General section of Settings.

  • Go To "Software Update"

Second from the top, head into "Software Update" to check for an update to your current iOS.

  • "Install Now"

You'll see this screen if there's a software update (like iOS 6.0.0) available. Touch "Install Now" to get started, but note that, as of now, Apple does not allow you to update your software over the Internet if you do not have more than 50 percent of your battery or if your iPhone is not plugged in to a power source. You also need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network, not just to 2G or 3G.

  • Agree To The Terms And Conditions

Read through the Terms and Conditions, making sure to note all relevant clauses and licensee restrictions, and then touch "Agree" to begin the download.

  • You're Done!

After a restart, you will have the newest iPhone software! If you want to make sure everything worked as planned: 1. Go to "Settings" 2. Go to "General" 3. Go to "About" 4. Scroll down to see which "version" of iOS you are running. Above, you can see that iOS 6.0 is indeed installed on my phone.

  • No More Updates!

You can also do Steps 1 through 3 to double-check that you're iPhone or iPod Touch does indeed have the latest software. When you go into "Software Update," you should see this screen if you have the most recent iOS.

My I Phone is version 4.0.1 (8A306). I do not have Software Update available under General via Settings. Does anyone have any suggestions -- where do I go to update to I0S 5.0.1??

After having the v.5 update kill some very useful features I used daily on my iPhone4, I'll always wait several days before tilting at the update piñata again.

How come they don't do this for Microsoft? Is there an Apple bias here or what??? Windows releases updates almost every week so it would help if Huffpost could post a front page article on this whenever Microsoft releases new Windows updates. There are after all more windows pc in the world than any other OS. This really would be helpful as I turned off my windows update alerter on my computer as it's rather annoying, but I think I wouldn't be as annoyed if Huffpost did the alerting for me.

Because Windows never actually fixes anything.

Like you said, every two weeks there's an update. Apple does an update, and it fixes a whole host of bugs and problems. Windows does an update, it fixes one thing... and then asks you to wait two weeks for another fix for another problem.

I do find it funny that you're annoyed when Windows asks you to update, but you want HuffPo to run a front page article every time there's an update available. Seems like a good use of everyone's time.

They'd have to dedicate an entire subpage to "Microsoft Updates". Some poor intern would never sleep.

Thank God HP put this update on their front page.  I might have missed updating for at least several hours.  But I have it, and my life is now complete.  There is this feeling of calm, of a higher power in control, of communion with God that comes from having your Apple devices up to date.

I agree. It was pretty darn frustrating that the update took almost three minutes each for both my iPhone and my iPad.  Fortunately, I only lost the use of one essential device at a time.  I was terrified when the phone rebooted.  All I could think was, what if it does not come back?  I know I have a backup, and the Apple Store is just across the street, but it was stressful all the same.

No, it's not a *stroy,* it's one item among many on a web site. You could easily have ignored it, but chose not to. Do you complain about all other *stroys* that don't happen to address your personal interests and needs?

Any one else notice the condition in the agreement where the ownership of the products is nontransferable at death? That means we are only renting the products and can not leave them to our family. If I can not assign them in my will then I am want to understand in what sense I own the product once I purchase it on iTunes. If I can not transfer that ownership upon my death, it does not belong to me, but to them. Anyone else notice this shift? It wasn't this way just a few years ago. Is our ownership limited to a single life and theirs, through copyright laws, available for generations?

I hope to outlive my iPhone.  In fact, I hope to outlive quite a few of them.  Apple can pry the last one from my cold dead hands.
