Sharon Simmons, Grandmother, Auditions For Dallas Cowboys Cheerleading Squad (VIDEO)

Grandma Cheerleader
Sharon Simmons, 55-year-old grandmother of two, auditions for the Dallas Cowboys' cheerleading squad.

To become a cheerleader for "America's Team" has long been considered among the top gigs for professional cheerleaders across the county. This past Sunday, 55-year-old Sharon Simmons decided to take her talents to Dallas -- along with hundreds of other hopefuls -- with aspirations of finally achieving that lifelong goal.

“I thought, that’s something I never tried,” Simmons told CBS DFW. “I always wanted to try out. I got real close in my early 20s, but got busy raising my daughter. And I thought, why not now?”

A grandmother of two from Carollton, Texas who works in commercial real estate, Simmons has been an author and fitness competitor.

"I don't see a number," she told ABC News regarding her age before her audition. "If I do, it's just a number. It's not that I can't keep up with [younger women] in the physical part of the training."

If Simmons makes the cut then she won't be the only grandma on the NFL sidelines in 2012. Last year, the Oakland Raiders had a grandmother of their own join the squad.

Simmons would be 56 at the start of the 2012 NFL regular season, and the oldest cheerleader in the league, surpassing 43-year-old Laura Vikmanis of the Cincinnati Bengals. Kudos to the women -- and men -- of the sport who continue to keep the dream alive.

Has she ever watched that show about those cheerleaders I wonder? It's not gonna happen sweetheart. The women they choose are barely out of their teens most of the time and they all weigh about 100lbs. During the selection process they badger those young women and tell them they are "thick" (i.e. normal, healthy young women) and they need to lose weight. It's terrible.

She actually did have a decent chance. Ever heard of Laura Vikamnis on the Bengals? She's the oldest NFL Cheerleader in history and she's in her 40s.

Maybe so but those Dallas women are brutal about who they'll put on the team.

Well GO G-MA! haha. If she can do..more power to her. Oh and the kick line photo? Kelly would have a brain explosion, if she saw it. Their legs were out of sync and NOT together union and kicking "as one unit" as Kelly would state. LOL...just sayin.

Good for you Sharon, I think your awesome!

I wish her well, but she's riding against the tide. The cheerleader world is a very competitive one, very vain too, why would anyone still want to be part of it at 55?

My thoughts exactly. While I applaud her for "going for it". I have to wonder if even aspiring to it is capitulating somewhat to what is seen as the ideal; and in so doing, lessons her.

Good for her trying. Not so much rooting for her at making the roster, but if she does...I feel bad for the younger ones who didn't succeed. Ouch!

She has as good a shot at making the roster as she does at becoming an astronaut.

just because you can doesnt mean you should. time to stop trying to rekindle your youth

Bless her for trying but there are certain jobs that have specific qualifications. Yes, she looks great. Note that I said "great". Dallas cheerleaders have a set reputation and guidlines. Sure she can do the moves but it is not a Dallas Cheerleader. Anything less will not suffice. They must be fantastic and she is not. We all get older and must face the facts. Besides that picture of her shows a very hefty gut for a Cowboys cheerleader and that is not acceptable. For all the people who will send me hate mail, let me ask you this, would you want a ninety year old pilot flying your next trip to Europe or wherever even though they could still perform the absolute minimum requirments? Didn't think so.

I say forget all the haters. If she looks the part and can pass the physical qualifications, by all means - I hope she gets the job. After all, don't we all root for the underdog?
