Warren Weinstein, American Kidnapped By Al Qaeda In Pakistan, Appears In Video Posted Online

By SEBASTIAN ABBOT 05/07/12 02:42 PM ET AP

ISLAMABAD — A 70-year-old American aid worker kidnapped nine months ago in Pakistan said in a video released by al-Qaida that he will be killed unless President Barack Obama agrees to the militant group's demands. The White House called for his immediate release.

The video posted on militant websites Sunday followed one issued in December in which al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri said Warren Weinstein would be released if the U.S. stopped airstrikes in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. He also demanded the release of all al-Qaida and Taliban suspects around the world.

"My life is in your hands, Mr. President," Weinstein said in the new video. "If you accept the demands, I live; if you don't accept the demands, then I die."

It was unclear when the video was recorded.

At the White House, Obama spokesman Jay Carney insisted the U.S. will not negotiate with al-Qaida. "We condemn his kidnapping in the strongest terms and call for (Weinstein's) immediate release," he said.

A woman who answered the phone Monday at a number listed for Weinstein in Rockville, Md., said she had no comment when an Associated Press reporter identified herself. Phone messages left for Weinstein's relatives were not immediately returned.

Weinstein was abducted in August in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore after gunmen tricked his guards and broke into his home. He was the country director in Pakistan for J.E. Austin Associates, a U.S.-based firm that advises a range of Pakistani business and government sectors.

"It's important you accept the demands and act quickly and don't delay," Weinstein said in the video, addressing Obama. "There'll be no benefit in delaying. It will just make things more difficult for me."

Weinstein spoke while sitting down in front of a white background. He wore a white shalwar kameez, the loose-fitting clothing common in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Several books and what appeared to be a plate of food were set in front of him. Weinstein took several bites of food as he spoke.

He appealed to Obama as a father. If the president responds to the militants' demands, Weinstein said, "then I will live and hopefully rejoin my family and also enjoy my children, my two daughters, like you enjoy your two daughters."

The video was released by Al-Sahab, al-Qaida's media arm. It was first reported by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors militant messages.

After his kidnapping, Weinstein's company said he was in poor health and provided a detailed list of medications, many of them for heart problems, that it implored the kidnappers to give him.

In the video released Sunday, Weinstein said he would like his wife, Elaine, to know "I'm fine, I'm well, I'm getting all my medications, I'm being taken care of."

Mike Redwood, a friend of Weinstein's from Somerset, England, said he watched the video Monday morning and said he had mixed feelings. He said he was grateful that Weinstein is alive – or at least was alive when the undated video was shot – but remains dismayed to see his friend in such dire circumstances.

"He's more capable of withstanding these circumstances than anybody else I know," Redwood said, "But it doesn't take away from feeling really depressed at seeing him there."

He said he thought Weinstein's neutral delivery was appropriate under the circumstances.

"I think he said it in measured tones that indicate that while he's under duress and in captivity, he knows what he's doing and in control and capable of managing himself, which was always what you would expect of Warren," Redwood said.

Redwood said he hoped he could take Weinstein at his word that he was getting his medications and being treated well. He said the poor image quality of the video made it difficult to gauge his health.

Redwood, a leather industry consultant, met Weinstein when they worked together on a plan to enhance the Pakistani leather industry. He has not spoken to Weinstein's family.

Just a quick question, if this man, whom I hope will make it home safe and sound,
were in fact to be waterboarded by his captors...

would John Yoo and all the right wing Republican coconuts argue it isn't torture?

It's unfortunate that this man will be scarificed for our freedom. We need more intelligence to hunt down these extremists and execute them all. I'm sure there are a million people that would love a job. May this man pass-in-peace. God Bless Him!

This is just heartbreaking, and when they make rescuse and free him and hunt those terrorists down, I hope they do whatever is necessary to get him out.

Why is everyone worried about getting Weinstein out? Nobody is responsible for getting him out. He went there knowing it was a powder keg. He was greedy! Now he pays the price for his greed. Period!

Negotiating with terrorists only means more terrorism and kidnappings.

When a person takes a job in known hostile / dangerous environments, that person accepts the associated risks and any consequences that go with them.

I hope the barbarian cowardly kidnappers of a 70-yr-old let him go - but there can never be negotiation with kidnapping terrorists. Ever.

What is a 70 year old man with a heart condition doing in a war zone?
03:48 AM on 05/08/2012
This is a really bad situation,,,i dont think anything good will come of it unfortunately.I really cant imagine why the hell a 70 year old guy is over there as an aid anyway.I hope things change for this individual.I hope these people responsible are dealt with properly. These 'groups' of people and their so called 'religion' is starting to wear thin on me.

Unfortunately they wont be, we have to respect them etc and people would get all up in arms if we started shooting these groups of tribal savages down.

"I feel bad for Warren Weinstein, but the fact is, we need to hunt these terrorists down and exterminate them either one by one or even as a group. If we find where they are, we need to destroy the whole region."

Let's get rid of the terrorists on Wall street FIRST!!

i would not have made that video demanding items i know the the u.s. will not deliver on. w/o me, they could not torment me emotionally. i would take one for the team. we need not give in to these demands. if and when we are dealing w/ his hostage keepers, then yes, we could possibly find a common ground. we must try something that they are willing to discuss. peace must prevail. godspeed to the gentleman and for his family. again, this is what i would do, seeing really, a no way out, situation.

Common ground is actually very simple for Al Queda and Islamic Extremists - the world either submit to Sharia law or die...not complicated from their point of view at all.

I was under the impression that only in Karachi was it safe for a westerner to live in Pakistan.
This person has made a grave error. His whereabouts are probably known so its on the Pakistan military to deliver. They owe us for Bin Laden and if they cannot do it we must inform them that they are now considered a terrorist state. We will set up economic sanctions and cut off all foreign aid.

Actually Lahore was the safest city. There are more Afghanis in Karachi than Lahore. Don't you remember Daniel Pearl was in Karachi. There have been a number of blasts in hotels in Karachi.

I believe you are right. I assumed because Karachi was so far from the border that it would be safe. Yes i do remember now. I guess there is no safe place left in Pakistan.

So some terrorists are OK - others are not?

Seems releasing people who have killed Americans as a bargaining chip is NOT a smart move.
10:27 PM on 05/07/2012
The worst part of this is not that this guy will be beheaded. It's not even all of the suffering his family will go through. Or even the $10,000,000.00 that taxpayers will have to pay to hunt this garbage down and keep it alive in Guantanamo for 10 years until the case comes to trial.

The worst part is some lowlife attorney will have the kahones to demand that the women in the court room "be respectful of the peaceful religion of Islam" and put on head rags out of respect!!

Excuse my while I hurl a preemptive VOMIT!!!
01:07 AM on 05/08/2012
absolutely! I have no use for this "religion"....too much respect for "it" and not enough for the rest of us in Christian-Judeo community
10:00 AM on 05/08/2012
Exactly, and people with no common sense dont stop to think that the "religion" they are defending is militant tribal groups who dont know how to do anything but kill each other and anyone they come in contact with. A religion that blatantly says to convert or kill everyone in the world is treated as peacful.

I've been saying this for years... want to stop terrorists? You're going to have to go to their level. Conventional military tactics simply don't work. The answer, while ugly, will. Any terrorist that harms a U.S. citizen will be hunted down and killed, along with any of his family members that can be found. One of the biggest recruiting tools Al-Qaida has is the promise to every member that if they should die for their cause any family members they leave behind will be supported and protected. Strip away that safety net and Al-Qaida will have a hard time recruiting new members... Sounds barbarian to some, but so does flying a jet into a skyscraper.

That's what separates us from them though. If we went to that level we would be no better than they are. We would be the terrorists alongside them. I agree with more aggressive tactics, but resorting to the murder of family members is not one of them.

So we keep sending kids to die in a barbarian land for people who have been killing each other since the dawn of time, and keep the "moral high ground" while they laugh at how weak they see us because we dont live like its 10 BC. I've heard enough of this argument, American citizens are dying because people are too wrapped up in their own self-important "we're at war but lets not hurt anybody and maybe these people will think we're really not so bad" garbage to actually put any of these violent extremist groups down properly.
11:56 PM on 05/07/2012
I have said the exact same thing myself before. But after thinking it through determined that thinking was flawed. It would be difficult finding the culprets and running down family members. My new thinking is the 100 to 1 rule. For every one of our people they kill we randomly bomb a city that we have identified with high terrorist activity using a bomb sized to kill approx 100 for each person they kill. Would we be killing mostly innocent people? Yes, but so are they and the intention is to eventually stop this kind of terrorism and there is NO other way.
12:43 AM on 05/08/2012
What both of you ask to do would only make things worst. Do you know how terrorists recruit people? its by using propaganda that is built on our own actions. If you killed hundreds or thousands of innocent civilians you will enrage entire countries. Terrorist recruitment would skyrocket as the civilians rise up in anger at our barbaric actions; governments and entire countries will turn against and provide great support to terrorists. Afghanistan's cooperation would come to and end because you are killing their INNOCENT citizens; they will demand that we stop/leave and if we don't they will fight us, and then it will be the iraq war all over again, only this time their is nothing that could end it since the entire country is the enemy and we could never create a new government that did not hate us; we have to place them under indefinite military occupation that would be impossible to maintain. The arab nations may easily start coming to the aid of the arab government and even our allies may withdraw their support and leave us on our own... you would basically be leading us down the path to WWIII

This man is in a perilous situation, since the U.S does not negotiate with terrorists. I hope his family will not hold this against the president.
09:26 AM on 05/08/2012
Why would the family hold ill feelings against the president? Warren Weinstein went to that area knowing full well that it was a very dangerous situation. Weinstein made the decision to go. Bottom line, Weinstein's greed put him in that situation. Additionally, why would a seventy (70) year old man with a heart condition still be working?
