'Colbert Report' Mocks Exaggerated Hand Sanitizer Headlines (VIDEO)

WATCH: Colbert Mocks Exaggerated Hand Sanitizer Stories

In late April, an LA Times article about local teens getting drunk off of hand sanitizer made waves across the nation. Was this something all parents should be worried about? How many teens we actually participating in the trend?

Since then, news outlets have been giving parents nondescript pointers on how to keep their children from becoming sanitizer abusers, effectively publicizing a trend that had only six reported cases before hitting the news cycle.

So on Monday night's "Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert took a minute to address these teens apparently running amok with their rampant Purell use.

"Folks, this TV coverage based on one story in the LA Times means there is an epidemic," he joked.

"You live in California for Christ's sake, have you never heard of medical marijuana? Just go to the doctor and tell them you're suffering from anxiety caused by all the news stories about kids drinking hand sanitizer."
