RNC Official: Romney Still Deciding Immigration Position

Mitt Romney Immigration Position

A Latino-vote outreach program on Tuesday plans to stress to voters that the president has failed on immigration reform and deported a record number of people, said the Republican National Committee's top Hispanic outreach coordinator.

But so far, it doesn't have a message on what Republicans would do on the issue themselves, and specifically the plans of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. In fact, coordinator Bettina Inclan told reporters, Romney didn't have his immigration policy mapped out and the RNC would not yet be able to talk about it to Latino voters.

The RNC quickly tried to take back the statement, telling reporters who tweeted it that Inclan's words were misunderstood -- or that she was misquoted. Kirsten Kukowski, a spokeswoman for the RNC, said message coordination between the RNC and the Romney campaign is still in its early stages because challenger Rick Santorum only dropped out of the race two weeks ago.

Still, the statement by Inclan seemed to indicate the RNC's lack of message on immigration, despite an increased effort to turn out Latino voters. Below is the full quote from Inclan, that Kukowski would later say was misconstrued:

I think that as a candidate, to my understanding that he's still deciding what his position on immigration is, so I can't talk about what his proposal is going to be because I don't know what Romney exactly -- he's talked about different issues, and what we saw in the Republican primary is that there's a diverse opinion on how to deal with immigration. I can't talk about something that I don't know what his position is.

A few minutes later, after apparently reading tweets from reporters on the phone and in the room, Kukowski said they were misreporting the statement.

"I want to clear something up. As far as what Governor Romney's positions are on immigration, that is for him and his campaign to talk about, and they will tell you what their policies are," she said. "In this room right now, and what we do at the RNC from a Hispanic outreach perspective, is on-the-ground community outreach in the Hispanic community."

"So whatever was misconstrued as far as us -- we never said the governor is still deciding on immigration," she continued. "If you have a question about his immigration policy, you can go to their campaign."

After the meeting with reporters, Inclan tweeted, "I misspoke, Romney's position on immigration is clear," linking to the immigration page on the candidate's website.

The main message of the Latino outreach by the RNC will be jobs and the economy, which mirrors the efforts so far by the Romney campaign. Latinos are suffering economically, with higher-than-average levels of unemployment and low educational achievement.

But Obama indicated that he plans to hit Republicans hard on the issue of immigration, which it ranks below the economy in importance for Hispanic voters, but is highly considered nonetheless. In the midst of GOP debates where candidates fought to appear tough on immigration, Obama joked that he could replay those exchanges on Spanish-language stations and they would speak for themselves.

Obama has disappointed some Latinos on the issue of immigration, especially with legislative failures and deportation rates. When asked how it would approach the issue as a party that has largely advocated for more, not less, immigration enforcement, Inclan said it was more about showing how Obama failed on the issue.

"If you want to run on something, you have to run on the entire thing," Inclan said. "This is part of his record."

Romney has evolved his message on immigration, at least in tone, painting himself as a hawk who wanted to drive undocumented immigrants out of the country and veto a bill to help undocumented young people, and then pivoting to say he might support a plan from Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) that would do something similar for youth.

Inclan said that the party is ramping up its Latino outreach efforts, acknowledging Democrats may have been better at community efforts than the GOP in the past.

"There are certain polls that show that some members of the Hispanic community feel that the Republican Party isn't doing enough to include them in what we're doing, to reach out to them," she said. "So what we're trying to do is rebuild that relationship and make sure that they know that we do care."

My fellow Christian Hispanic brothers and sisters, after you put George W. in office...TWICE...because ran on "Christian values", did you pay attention to ANYTHING ELSE he and Cheney said and did? Get this through your heads once and for all: Republicans are not fond of us. Especially not the tea party (Don't you see the stars and bars flag at the rallies? Did you think that was only in the 60's? Try to "look" or "act Hispanic" at a restaurant in the deep south today-they will tell you to get your food TO GO; they will actually say "Do you know where you are right now?") We are not rich, we speak Spanish, most of us don't look Caucasian, our music, food and traditions are different. They don't have our best interest at heart. Really. They flip-flop because they're scared you'll find that out. Usen la cabeza.

If the Republican Latino Outreach program looks anything like their black outreach program, it will look something like this. "We want to remind all of you lazy worthless parasites that you need to self-deport yourself back to Mexico (even if you didn't come from Mexico because we only recognize brown skinned people as lazy Mexicans who come here to steal our jobs, spong off of our welfare system and generally bring down the nation)....Now vote for us! Of course Mitt hasn't formed an opinion yet. It take a little more time when you are going to come down on both sides of an issue!

Whenever Mitt the Flip makes up his mind , he will change his position depending on what day it is and who he is talking to. He does this on everything, so why would there be an exception here.

OK. Looks pretty good to me. Especially when the government is going to help those who want health care but can't afford it. Here's the thing, genius. It's the Constitution that requires "probable cause" before questioning a "suspect" and I doubt that the founding fathers would consider "looking foreign" as probable cause. Here's my quote. Fathom the hypocrisy of a conservative who touts the Constitution, but hasn't the vaguest idea what's in it!

Get back to me when you can differentiate between the USCA and the Constitution. I have actually read both and have argued in front of juries for both Defendants and Plaintiffs. If you want to play in my backyard you don’t get preferential treatment or “reasonable accommodation” because you have an opinion rather than facts or law. Could you tell me where in the Constitution probable cause is mentioned, let alone defined? And just to make this a real quiz for you, I’m not saying it isn’t. Frankly the really fun stuff is in the Ninth Amendment and we can get a lot of mileage out of our unenumerated, but incorporated, rights under English Common Law. Hyperbole is a lot fun right until it bites you in the butt. Try to bear in mind that if you are giving aid and comfort to those who are breaking the law you are, yourself, a criminal. That little gem is in the USCA as well. You seemingly have extremely thin skin and no sense of humor. I guess that balances out your lack of legal, philosophical and ethical strengths…

PS: I looked behind your curtain and wasn’t impressed by the short, fat, balding man pulling levers and attempting to intimidate the masses with parlor tricks. No wonder you sent innocents to do your dirty work and then left Dorothy behind as you made your cowardly escape from the Emerald City In a balloon filled with your never ending supply of hot air…

Wasn't he the one who wanted a fence across the Mexican border? I think he has his mind made up, he just wants to seem moderate, instead of radical. He doesn't like to be so vocal about his electrified fence anymore, huh?

When did he ever mention an electrified fence? His poistion on illegal immigrants has always been the same.
02:30 PM on 05/10/2012
Look back on the GOP debates. Bachman and him were all over that electrified fence. It was back in August of 2011 when Herman Cain suggested it and most of the other candidates agreed that it would be a good idea.

Mitt will you sign an executive order to stop spending 33MILLION dollars a year to house underage illegals in Texas. Mexico rather than pay to house these illegals from El Salvador and Honduras used to immediately deport them to their home consulate. Last year they decided it was cheaper to just help the kids get to the USA, because El Norte would pay for them in more ways than one.

Poor poor Mittens. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. That's why he has none. Can't make a concrete decision if his life depended on it. It's ok Mittens. The Repulsive Teabaggers will be pulling your strings and putting the words in your mouth. Not to worry.

Mr. Etch-A-Sketch and his position on anything is unimportant be cause it is subject to change without notice. If he is told bringing back the guillotine strictly for gay baby whales would get him votes, he would favor it.
Now just think about it; part of Obama's problem is the perception that instead of leading he does as he is told on domestic issues.
Now comes a man who wants to be president and proudly puts on display that he always says and does EXACTLY as he is told, as long as it will supposedly get him more votes. How long has it been since he has had an opinion that he wasn't told to have?
America needs a leader in the mold of FDR or Eisenhower. Instead we have a clown circus with two main rings.
Can we just skip the election and they send out the trained cats? At least they're cute which is alot more than could ever be said of a politician.

The issue isn't that Romney doesn't have a stated position on immigration (or other issues) but that he has taken virtually every position on every relevant issue.

Wait. What is meant by "he's still deciding what his position on immigration is"? I seem to recall at one of the debates in October Mitt describing his self deportation position. Or is this one of his sure to be many Etch-O-Sketch moments?

While his left hand holds our attention on immigration, do not take your eyes off his right hand. It's busy stuffing another member of the Bush administration into the foreign policy team back pocket, which includes John Bolton, Douglas Feith, and 6 other advisers who signed letters drafted by the Project for a New American Century. You know, that guys who fantasized about invading Iraq? Let's just say, if you haven't had enough war over the past 10 years Romney's your man. Now, what's his opinion on immigration? Whatever Corporate America wants.

Is he taking the presidency seriously? What the heck does he think he's going to have to do if he becomes the next president? He's like a kid that shows up unprepared for class and doesn't know what's going on because he's used to buying his way through everything.

Those voting for Romney don't care a wit about his opinions. He's already satisfied the two critical requirements; w hite, and "anybody but O bama."
