Aimee Copeland, University of West Georgia Student, Gets Flesh Eating Disease After Falling Off A Zip Line

Aimee Copeland

A University of West Georgia student contracted a virulent flesh-eating bacteria in her leg after a fall from a zip-line went horribly wrong.

Aimee Copeland, 24, was zip-lining during a kayaking trip with friends in Carrollton, Ga, when she fell and lacerated her leg. After getting several stitches in her leg, doctors realized Copeland had contracted a flesh-eating bacteria called necrotizing fasciitis in the wound site.

According to the Necrotizing Fasciitis Foundation, NF is a bacterial infection that, "gets into the body, quickly reproduces, and gives off toxins and enzymes that destroy the soft tissue and fascia, which quickly becomes gangrenous (dead)." In order to save someone that has NF, the "gangrenous tissue must be surgically removed."

In Copeland's case, her leg eventually had to be amputated at the hip.

After the amputation, Copeland condition worsened. On Friday, she went into cardiac arrest, but was resuscitated. However, on Tuesday, she was able to move her arms and breath on her own, although doctors still might have to amputate the tips of her fingers and toes. Her family has created a facebook group called "Believe and pray for a miracle to happen for Aimee Copeland" which accepts donations.

This is so sad. I have been following this story. If I was her parent, I would do some investigating because she could have contracted this disease from the hospital during her stitching up after the fall. I just can't see her getting this from a fall. The hospital may not have provided a properly sterilized environment. May God be with her....

What a perfect example of the medical realm keeping someone alive far beyond where they should be.

She was able to "breath" on her own? Come on Huffington Post, get some editors.

On another note, I really hope Aimee survives and brings much needed attention to NF.

You don't even have to fall off a zip line. I've seen cases where the decedent only popped a zit on their butt.

Nerotizing Faciitis is treated with surgery, antibiotics and Hyperbaric Treatment. Please have someone associated with this case get a consult for Hyperbaric Therapy ASAP. This is an emergency. I am an RN at a Hyperbaric Facility and NF is one of our indications for Treatment. I have seen people recover from this..... Necrotizing Faciitis is an anerobic infection and the anerobe cannot exist in a high PPO2 enviornment. Refer to "Textbook of Hyperbaric Medicine", 5th edition, by K.K. Jain.... Please act on this ASAP!!

Terrible situation for her and her family. Did the infection occur because of the way she was handled while being stitched? Is this another example of super bugs spreading everywhere?

I'm not sure about this situation, but more than likely it was a result of bird droppings. There was a case a few years back where a utility worker was working on overhead power lines and somehow he ended up slashing his arm with one of the lines. It was determined that he contracted this infection from the pigeon droppings that were on the line. Ever since I heard about that story, I have been wary of any bird droppings.

I contracted NF from the soil my cat used outside and pricked my thumb 3 yrs ago. the infection spread rapidly and the Drs had to removed my thumb. Its very deadly.

does anyone know where she got the necrotizing fasciitis, where she was exposed to it?
01:35 PM on 05/10/2012
the bacteria can be found in soil.

Stay strong, Aimee. The most important part of you and your contribution to this world is still within you. Find the strength to use it to be an inspiration to others and yourself.
