Mexico Violence: Dismembered Bodies Found Near Lake Chapala

05/09/12 10:28 PM ET AP

MEXICO CITY -- Police found 18 dismembered and beheaded bodies inside two vans in an area frequented by tourists near the city of Guadalajara in western Mexico, authorities said Wednesday.

Jalisco state Prosecutor Tomas Coronado said earlier police found 15 severed human heads in the vans a few miles from Lake Chapala and his office confirmed later in a statement that three more heads had been found along with the other body parts.

"The bodies are dismembered," Coronado said in an interview transcript provided by his office. He said authorities received a phone call alerting them to the presence of two minivans on a dirt access road near Lake Chapala, which is popular with tourists and American retirees.

The vehicles were towed to government offices to unload the bodies.

The area has been the scene of bloody turf battles between the Jalisco New Generation gang, allied with the Sinaloa cartel, and the Zetas drug cartel.

Mexican drug cartels frequently dismember the bodies of their victims or leave them stuffed into vehicles. The gangs also frequently leave hand-written messages alongside their victims' bodies, and Coronado said that such messages were found in the vans.

"They are clearly messages between rival groups that are in conflict," Coronado said.

Coronado also said the killings may have been linked to the abduction of 12 people who later escaped in the same area on Tuesday. A woman who was allegedly watching the captives was detained. She told investigators that the kidnappings were "a repercussion of what happened in Tamaulipas."

That was an apparent reference to the slayings of 23 people whose bodies were found Friday in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, in northern Tamaulipas state. The bodies were found hanging from a bridge or decapitated and dumped near city hall Friday in Nuevo Laredo, where drug cartels are fighting an escalating turf war.

Messages were found in Nuevo Laredo threatening the Gulf cartel, which has joined Sinaloa to battle the Zetas. The killings could be part of a wide-ranging, tit-for-tat battle between Sinaloa and the Zetas, in which both sides have been known to massacre dozens of people accused of supporting the rival gang.

I am retired to this area. What this latest news report does not say is that the victims of these kidnapping and killings are not involved in drugs. They are innocent people being dragged off the streets at night or taken in broad daylight. One of the victims in this recent massacre is the son of a restaurant owner we all know, a recent college grad, grabbed along with a friend with him at the time. The community--expats and Mexicans--are devastated by these massacres, which, of course, are more awful to us than the shoot-outs we've lived through in our area which involved gangs only killing each other. These latest killings seem to be intended to intimidate or show rival gangs just how mean the killers can be, but innocent people are being murdered.

I thought the Zetas were trained at Fort Hood in Texas.

Where would you go to get away from it?

@Jose 3: “I thought the Zetas were trained at Fort Hood in Texas.
Where would you go to get away from it?”

Jose, I don't know where the Zetas trained. Will take your word for it.
Where would I go other than illegal-imploded, gang-infested, crime ridden, welfare state California?
Have family in VT. and MT. Visiting there see no evidence of incursion.

Whether you are a refugee running from countries in Central America, or a school teacher in the state of Vera Cruz, Mx., the beheading and mutilation killings are very close to life in Mexico. You add to this toxic mixture, "Fast and Furious", the wholesale arming of cartels with automatic weaponry by U.S. arms dealers, the insatiable appetite for illegal drugs within every segment of American society and what do you have? A country that is no longer governable, that has admittedly lost jurisdiction and military control of much of its national territory, must now...1. Mexicans as a society rise against those in their midst supporting Cartel Operations 2. The sale of Weapons of MASS DESTRUCTION is stopped 200 miles north of the Mexican border.......3 The President of Mexico places the entire country under the control of a National Auxiliary Authority with powers (and that means getting the United Nations involved) to restructure governmental, enforcement and economic institutions. Re-aligning them in benefit of building a society not beholden to the powers represented by Cartel operations.......unless a 3rd party, the United Nations, becomes involved, Mexico will become the Somalia/Serbia of the South, inviting the invasion of Mexican national territory not seen since the occupation of Vera Cruz by American forces in April of 1914.

WHat the news providers have not picked up on is the fact that innocent boys and men are being kidnapped off the streets and they are the ones being massared in the name of "cartel members" for retaliation!! This is the last straw for me living lakeside to see these innocents being killed this way! The government loves to say only the bad guys are being killed....load of horse sh***. The innocents are getting killed everyday in Mexico...where is the army, the white knights?,! Ha, no such thing in war zone.

who wants to legalize murderers??? Your racism is showing, you should worry about your home grown terrorist instead. Kids going postal shooting randomly in America's schools. The uni bomber was not Mexican, nor the terrorist of 9/11 or Timothy McVeigh for that matter. See we have big problems here too, don't worry about illegals taking your job, China will soon.

El Diario is a Spanish newspaper and one of its memes is that Latino life if not valued in the US. Well, I have to wonder how valued Latino life is in Mexico.

It is a shame that B.O. diverted U.S. aid to Latin America and instead spend it to cause mayhem in the Middle East and build bases in Poland.

no they don't target tourist, their main target are other drug dealers or cops.
11:37 AM on 05/10/2012
There were dismembered bodies thrown here.....doesn't matter who they target, you won't find a reasonable tourist there. "Hey let me lay out here and catch some sun...next to the body parts over there."

Mexican cartels fueled by the USA's insatiable demand for drugs.
11:40 AM on 05/10/2012
Oh so it's USA's fault Mexico can't handle their cartel problem? All they have to do if they really want to handle it is make a call. A simple call. The US would send special forces down there to train their troops, and take out the cartel leaders, in a heart beat.

Maybe if Obama didn't refuse to finish the border fence the drug smugglers (all illegal aliens) couldn't get here.
09:55 AM on 05/10/2012
The cartels serviced the American drug demand for decades without employing the tactics on display in this article. Wholesale slaughter of innocents, decapitations, hanging bodies from bridges; not the cartels of yesteryear.

What influences played such a role in changing the directions of the cartel's business model?
11:42 AM on 05/10/2012
Money. There money has reached the highest levels of government. They recently disbanded an entire states (if that's what they call them? states, territories, provinces?) police force and replaced them with Mexican navy because they were all corrupt.

Roberto Bolano wrote about murder and dismembering of 300 (mostly) young girls in 2004 in his book 2666.
