1 in 6 Americans Believe Obama Is A Muslim, Lest that 1 in 4 Can Identify Him As Protestant

WASHINGTON (RNS) After nearly four years in the Oval Office, President Obama is incorrectly thought to be Muslim by one in six American voters, and only one quarter of voters can correctly identify him as a Protestant, according to a new poll.

“Wow. He said it 100 times that he’s not a Muslim,” said Zainab Al-Suwaij, executive director of the American Islamic Congress, expressing surprise over the persistent number of American voters (16 percent) who make the mistake.

Is there something insidious behind the belief, a concerted attack to link the president with a religion that's considered alien -- or worse -- by some Americans?

“I think it’s more a lack of information than an attack on him,” said Al-Suwaij.

While Americans across the board get the president's religion wrong, the religious group that most often thinks Obama is Muslim is white evangelical Protestants (24 percent). American unaffiliated with a religious group make the error least often: just 7 percent identify Obama as Muslim.

Daniel Cox, PRRI’s research director, said the small but not insignificant sliver of Americans who still believe Obama is Muslim is “fascinating.”

“Quite frankly, I’m not really sure what to make of it other than this person, although he speaks quite comfortably about his faith, doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve,” Cox said. “It’s an important part of who he is, but it’s not an important part of his public persona.”

The poll also found that white evangelical Protestants, who were suspicious of Romney in the early GOP primaries, are warming up to Romney now that he’s the presumptive nominee.

Romney’s support among white evangelicals has jumped 27 percent since October; evangelicals support him over Obama, 68 to 19 percent.

“There are clear signs that white evangelical Protestants are moving beyond any reservations they may have held earlier in the campaign about Romney’s Mormon faith,” said Cox.

Earlier this year, when primary voters faced more choices, evangelicals showed a preference for Catholics Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich, who campaigned hard on social issues dear to conservative Christians before dropping out.

“Americans want someone with strong religious convictions, but they don’t have to be the same as their own,” said Cox. “The exception is white evangelicals, who want them to be the same.”

But with a Mormon now the presumptive GOP nominee, that’s no longer a possibility for evangelicals, and the poll shows they are coalescing around Romney, Cox continued. “It’s a binary choice for them between someone who is on the right side of their issues and someone who is not.”

White evangelicals -- depending on how the term is defined and how the question is asked – make up between 20 and 25 percent of American voters. Among Republicans, they are a particularly powerful bloc, representing about 40 percent of GOP voters.

Obama’s support lies in Catholic and mainline Protestant territory. Catholic voters overall say they would be more likely to vote for Obama (46 percent) than Romney (39 percent), though white Catholic voters state a preference for Romney over Obama (48 to 37 percent).

The scenario of four years ago, in which Obama enjoyed strong support among Hispanic Catholics and weaker support among white Catholics, seems to be playing out again.

White mainline Protestant voters also prefer Obama over Romney (50 to 37 percent) and religiously unaffiliated voters stand even more firmly in the Obama camp (57 to 22 percent).

The poll also showed:

-- Obama maintains a significant lead over Romney in a head-to-head matchup (47 to 38 percent).

-- Sixteen percent of voters have yet to make up their minds about a presidential candidate. Among this group, Obama holds a slight edge (42 to 37 percent).

-- More than 60 percent of white evangelical, white mainline Protestant and Republican voters know that Romney is Mormon. Less than half of Catholic and Democratic voters know this.

The poll, of 1,006 Americans surveyed between May 2 and 6, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

"The goal of socialism is communism"~~ Vladimir Lenin

The less we are allowed to say the Pledge of Allegiance
to the United States the closer we are to the New America.

We will be destroyed from within.

The solution? Look at Ronald Reagan.

He got it right.

We need to keep the proper perspective in mind at all times.

Best regards.

ryan is the 1st vp who has chosen an atheist as his hero. He said he got his values and beliefs from the well known atheist ayn rand. What do the polls say about supporting a vp who gets his values and beliefs from an atheist?

this story just reinforces my belief that this country is doomed. It won't be destroyed by terrorists, though. It'll be destroyed by ignorant, poorly educated Americans.

The fact the there are Americans who believe Obama is Muslim is a condemnation of our educational system. We are quickly sliding into 2nd and 3rd class standards in science and math. Instead of bolstering our hard science studies in schools our misguided legislatures are mandating the stone aged mythology of creationism and the belief that the universe is 6,000 years old! With that kind of "education" it's no wonder we have such numbers of mislead American!

I also find it interesting that evangelicals can embrace Romney. A major belief among evangelicals is that the Mormon religion is a cult and thereby condemned by God. They are quick to condemn Gay rights but not Romney. Seems a contradiction to me. Or is it because Obama is Black and the race card trumps the God card? Just asking!

God did, indeed, create the universe.

Please read THE COLLAPSE OF EVOLUTION by Scott Huse.

Evolutionist REFUSE to debate the top creationist because they
get their non-evolved but created butts kicked every time.

They are utterly and completely humilated.

Darwin has left a bloodly, deadly legacy by getting in God's
face and, in essence, saying "Oh, no you dinnit!"

Darwin's "Let ME tell you how we all came about" makes me
fall down laughing all the time.

However, this is not funny.

When you strip us of our divinity and our sacredness, butchery follows.

A baby is not a baby created by God so slop it in a medical bucket or
down a medical disposal.

Welcome to the New Barbarians.

(God, I hate liberalism.)

I have no problem and in fact believe in the Universe being created by God. I differ with a literal belief in the Bible if you carry it to the extent that the earth is 6,000 years old, man existed with dinosaurs and some of the conclusions you have to make to reach to fit everything we know into that time frame.
I have studied evolution from a scientific and historic stand point. I believe it in theory but I have not read Huse's book. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll read it with an open mind. Peace.

Its certainly amazing how quickly many might quote what Jesus called the " second commandment ". He said that we " should love our neighbors as ourselves ". The Spirit form of this " commandment " does not hinder me from doing that. Except whenever it comes to associating myself to " the likeness " of a homosexual. If I loved him or her as myself, then that would be to say that I too am like him. Which I find fault in that kind of false understanding. Moral decentsy calls for a higher idea than that, and being a Christian has more to offer even to ourselves than that. Homosexuals themselves, go to church, read the Bible, confess Christ....but refuse to submit to The Holy Spirit and what is written and given to us to understand that God finds as an abomination. They are set on the things of the flesh, the pleasures of being defiant against God and Christ. They choose to crusade in " self reliance " rather than totally submitting themselves to God in Christ. Its a travesty, when our government uses freedom as a means to give rights to people who refuse to uphold the very God that created this nation. People who demoralize us with shameless activity and still profess to know God and Christ. They are the one's offering strange fire upon the altar. They are being given the rightaway to preach and teach, and deceive.

True Christians and True Muslims will not support Obama. His admonition alone of being in support of gay marriages has marred his support of True Christian and Muslim believers. All the money changer's and fakers and shakers in these religions will. But Bible believing and Koran believing People in God will never support a man. That stands against what God has said is an abomination to any nation that practices anything thats against His Words. We are not to support homosexuals, their activity is against God's will for humanity. Consenting Pastors, Preachers and Evangelicals, are rendering God's Word as moot. In face of being ridiculed by those who support these people of degenerate immoral sexual activity. And these immoral practices are what are causing us to be put in the cross hairs of God. Our Politicians unconcern for the Love of God in Christ. There is a prophecy awaiting us all at the end of this nation...and God will get His Glory upon it, amen!!!!

First of all, he is not "Obama". He is President Obama... please give the proper respect. I am what you call a true Muslim and I voted for President Obama in 2008 and will again in 2012. God did not create the United States... men did. Men who were religious practitioners, spiritualists, humanists, agnostics, deists, atheists, etc. Today, we have the same make up in our population and in our representative government. One of the founding principles of the United States is the separation of church and state.

We are guaranteed the right to practice as we choose and others are guaranteed the right to not have our beliefs forced upon them. With that in mind, my fellow Americans (Christians, Jews, Buddhists, straight, gay, bisexual, transgendered, etc) have the same right to representation that I do. I would ask no more or no less. Homosexuality is not right for me (myself personally only) but I would not stand in the way of someone else making choices for their life. We are to support the rights of our fellow Americans and practice our faith as it is given to us.

To quote Jesus from your Bible: 'Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him.' - Mark 12:17

Lets forget the the distingishing lines of either muslim or christianity. Whereas, Obama testifies to neither...He merely says he's a man of Godly belief. The Holy Spirit Who helped Moses and the prophets devise the Koran and the Torah, also helped to institute The New Testament of Jesus Christ. In these area's of religious beliefs, both believe that " man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God ". This reference is in fact found in Deuteronomy Ch. 8 verse 3 (old testament{koran}) and at Matthew Ch, 4 verse 4(new testament{Jesus Christ}. Does Obama support every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD? Muslims do not support " same sex marriages " they are an abomination to them. And Christians do not support " same sex marriages " they are an abomination to them. Obama supports same sex marriages. True Koran and Torah believing Muslims and True Bible believing Christians will never support Obama. Whereas his beliefs conform to being a traitor of God's Holy Words. If God has said through His word, either Koran or New Testament, that " men shall not lie with mankind as he would with women, its an abomination, and they shall sure die ". Obama is liberal and does not believe God at all. Or in His words as truth.

All the men/women calling themselves ministers, preachers, priests, etc............IF they are really a "follower of Jesus/God," it is their duty tell their members, that President Obama is a Christian and NOT a Muslem. If not, these men/women calling themselves "religious" are NOT FIT to be calling themselves "men of God," nor should they have a place to preach their lies.

I'm for making ALL churches/religions pay taxes. It's a business..........nothing else.

Yes, these are also the kind of people that believe the trips to the moon were actually filmed on a movie set in the New Mexico desert and frequently see the face of Jesus on their corn flakes. The vast majority of them are people with less than a High School education and live in the bible belt. Pull into a service station/convenience store anywhere in the rural south and you will hear a conservative radio talk show blaring in the background. These people live on a pure diet of that tripe and believe every bit of it. You can't cure stupid

As a Muslim, I would love to have the President be part of the team, as it were but sadly he is not. All that said, you are correct. I think the issue about claiming he is a Muslim or Kenyan-born or whatever else is to discredit him as an individual - rationally or not.

There is no such thing in the USA as separation of church and state. We have Freedom Of Religion......being that we can belong to any church that we may decide on.

Here it is below:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Where do you see anything about separation of church and state?

http://www.adl.org/issue_religious_freedom/separation_cs_primer.asp This is the concept that our judicial system has basically adopted. I suppose because of all the different religions we have in our country they would have to make their decisions on our civil laws as opposed to biblical laws or based on the koran etc.

It's kind of in the first sentence. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion".
