J.R. Smith Ripped On Twitter: Knicks Guard Under Fire After Loss To Heat

New York Knicks' Carmelo Anthony (7) celebrates with teammate J.R. Smith (8) after Game 4 of first-round playoff series against the Miami Heat.

There are many reasons that the New York Knicks were eliminated from the 2012 NBA playoffs by the Miami Heat and, make no mistake, the media and fans in the Big Apple will exhaust them all before the team plays its next game.

Among the myriad factors that led to the Knickerbockers' quick exit from the postseason tournament after just five games are the injuries suffered by guards Baron Davis, Iman Shumpert and Jeremy Lin. Embarrassingly, Amar'e Stoudemire was also forced to miss Game 3 after slicing open his hand by punching a fire extinguisher. The disparity of field goal attempts between Carmelo Anthony (31) and Stoudemire (7) in Game 5, and throughout the series, will certainly be discussed, too. There was also, of course, the matter of the Miami Heat, perhaps the most physically dynamic team in the NBA.

Somewhere mixed among these reasons was the performance of reserve guard J.R. Smith, who shot 3 for 15 from the field in the Game 5 loss. Although Smith's thrilling dunk in Game 3 provided the highlight of the series for the 'bockers, he was largely ineffective during the postseason, inspiring a small but vocal contingent of Knicks fans to take out their frustrations on him via Twtter.

don't pick up the player option we don't want you

Jim Bo
, u were awful tonight, I highly doubt the Knicks will re sign u back.

Rather than shy away from the bad reviews of his performance, Smith began retweeting some of his critics. All of a sudden, his timeline was filled with people calling him out for playing poorly. Smith even tweeted about the negativity that he was seeing.

JR Smith
Damn didn't know this man people didn't want me in might just get what you asking for!

JR Smith
Damn I'm glad I don't care what y'all say! Lmao! Flight back to 2 hr flight!

As the 26-year-old let his more than 118,000 Twitter followers know that he was undaunted by these critics, a few came to his defense.

RT : If Y'all think was the reason Ny lost ..then Ny really have some dumb ass fans

JR Smith
Thanks bro happy born day! RT : Hold your head bro! Pause!

Is one of my favorite ballers. Even though they lost, any team would be lucky to have him.

ESPN New York reported in April that Smith is likely to decline a player option on his contract to enter free agency. Will this interaction with the fans affect his decision? Of course, Knicks fans merely calling out a player for his performance is far better than the racism and death threats that have hit Twitter as other professional sports teams have been dumped from the playoffs in recent months.

Carmelo Anthony has the worst playoff record in 20 years.

Notice how the Nuggets are performing. The knicks got snookered into fools gold on that trade.

I like JR. He's fun to watch and I think he works hard. He doesn't always (or often) perform great and is more athleticism than skill, but he can get hot and help his team out a lot. I'd be just fine with Milwaukee signing him for next season! To blame him for the loss is to be ignorant of the myriad of other factors working against the Knicks, the least of which was Smith.

I don't think fans are only blaming him. Stat is getting heat, Melo for taking so many shots compared to Stat, but JR also played a part in the loss. He was horrible in the series. He's not the only one to blame, but does share some of it

I agree, but everyone on the team should share it equally. Fans who are tweeting at him "YOU are the reason we lost" need to take a reasonable look at the series and say that even with a healthy team they were down in the count to begin with. I like the Knicks and Heat, I thought it was a real fun series to watch and don't see reason to blame individuals.

This is typical from Earl Smith Jr. He has one good game and 10 games where he is absolutely terrible. The flashes of talent are just that, we have seen his act in Denver and this is more of the same, which is why we were happy to see him leave to play somewhere else.

While JR hasn't stepped up during the playoffs, I blame Woodson for not recognizing that Bibby should of been running the point for the rest of the game considering how well he was playing in the 1st quarter yesterday. JR's handle is sloppy and it showed early in the game. He picks up the ball way too soon before trying to pass and it gets him into trouble. I love watching the Knicks play as a team (which has been far and few in between) but seeing JR run the 1 is so damn frustrating. He's got a big heart and is a good player although he has to mature and work on this speaking skills - I couldn't understand a damn thing he was saying during an interview/commercial. Lastly, he jumps off the same foot on the side he dunks with - what's up with that? Just an observation and venting over for this Knick fan. On a positive note, nice dunk in game 4.

Twitter is just ridiculous. Anytime there is no real chance of repercussions, people are going to say stuff they would be less likely to say to someone's face. If you are famous and want to be on Twitter, unless you are a Kardashian and using Twitter to sell stuff, just use Twitter with friends & family. And I agree with the tweeter who said something like if Knicks fans think Smith is the reason the Knicks lost, those fans are not so bright.

That whole team is a mess and not gonna work as it doesn't gel. It was a team effort that had them loose.

haha, oh boy, its all a conspiracy to make Lebron win a championship...oh right he still hasnt won anything, my bad. Its the NBA, same as it ever was, only a few teams, like the top 4 at most are ever really in the running. Just the way it always will be, no parity. Refs in bball change the outcome of games all the way down to your rec league.
