'Five Second Rule' Put To The Test In New Study

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 05/11/2012 2:39 pm

Do you ever eat food that's fallen on the floor? Adherents of the "five second rule" certainly do, but a new study suggests that more bacteria may stick to certain items than previously thought.

Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University examined cooked pasta, ham, a biscuit, bread with jam and dried fruit that had been dropped on the floor for various lengths of time. The products were chosen because they're common, everyday items and contain different levels of water, which sustains bacterial growth.

According to The Daily Mail, the study found that foods with higher salt or sugar contents were less likely to pick up harmful bacteria:

Both the ham, a salty product, and the sugary bread and jam fared well in the test. When retrieved from the floor within three seconds, the foodstuffs showed little sign of bacterial growth. The dried fruit and cooked pasta, on the other hand, showed signs of klebsiella after three seconds - a bacteria which can potentially lead to a wide range of diseases such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, septicaemia and soft tissue conditions.

The dried fruit picked up dangerous bacteria in five seconds, and the pasta in just three.

Several studies have been conducted testing the five second rule, but our favorite is a more informal one carried out by Discovery's "Mythbusters" television program, which found that there was no significant difference in the number of bacteria that clung to an item over the course of two seconds than did over six seconds.

It's amazing how even one little drop of gluten can ruin my day. When I started my gluten diet every once in a while would have a little treat like a piece of pizza - immediate pain and cramps. I have to be very careful! Now my gluten diet is under control and life couldn't be any better. Your website is the best!

We don't have a five second rule in our house. I'm too busy to sweep and sanitize the floor after every meal/snack, so if my kids drop something, they generally end up eating it later. They never get sick, even when my husband and/or I do. Exposure to everyday germs strengthens the immune system. They've also probably eaten dirt, and definitely put rocks, sticks leaves and other plant material into their mouths when they play outside. (Yay for toddlers/preschoolers!)

I have no real problem with using the 5-second rule at home (after all, the germs there are the ones your body's already used to and has defenses against), but the 5-second rule becomes null and void when we're in a public place or at someone else's house. Goddess only knows what germs are floating around there, especially the public places!

Next up: researchers test how often buttered bread lands butter down. The results may surprise you!

Sheesh.

Bleech. Once it hits the floor, it's contaminated. Whether it can be washed sufficiently for consumption is the question. If it's raw and can be cleaned and cooked, fine. But nothing should go from floor to mouth.
