Attachment Parenting: 9 Celebrities Who Could Qualify As Attachment Moms

Posted: Updated: 05/14/2012 10:55 am

The magazine world's latest scandal is this Time magazine cover, which offended people left and right with its portrayal of a fit blonde mother openly breast-feeding her three-year-old child. "Why attachment parenting drives some mothers to extremes -- and how Dr. Bill Sears became their guru," the cover reads, presumably Time's angle into the controversial parenting philosophy on the rise.

But celebrity moms in Hollywood have been championing aspects of attachment parenting for some time -- from Jennifer Garner and Alicia Silverstone to Beyonce. Below, some principles of attachment parenting, as presented by celebrity mom.

  • Beyonce

One of attachment parenting's principles is to use a sling, not a stroller. Beyonce, who became a mom on January 7 when she gave birth to Blue Ivy Carter, has been seen around Tribeca walking her baby girl in normal slings and in amazing fur-covered slings, too.

(Bauergriffin)

  • Mayim Bialik

The former "Blossom" star believes in attachment parenting to the extent that she still nurses her three-year-old son and is into diaperless parenting and unschooling.

"We homeschool, but we don't keep any strict curriculum and we let our kids' interests and attention span determine a lot of the course of what we do," the mother of two has said.

(Getty)

  • Jennifer Garner

Mother-of-three Jennifer Garner is a famous advocate of breast-feeding. Upon receiving the Female Star of the Year award at the CinemaCon 2012 Awards Ceremony in April, Garner said:

"I told my mom the other day I was getting this award ... She [mom] said, 'Can they take this back? Because every time I talk to you, you are breast-feeding, you are running car pool, you are on the library committee -- you are not acting!'"

(

  • Gisele Bundchen

Gisele gave birth to her baby boy (in December 2009) in a water bath at home in Boston.

Another person who breast-feeds, the Brazilian supermodel told Harper's Bazaar UK: "Some people here (in the U.S.) think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think 'Are you going to give chemical to your child when they are so little?' I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breasted their babies for six months."

(Bauergriffin)

  • Angelina Jolie

Family slumber party, or just what attachment parenters call co-sleeping?

"Right now, Pax is sleeping in our bed. It's kind of nice, him immediately knowing and feeling comfortable with us. Mad slept with me until Brad and I got together. They're fun to sleep with. We have family sleep on Sundays. Everybody sleeps together," Angelina Jolie told Esquire magazine in July 2007.

(WireImage)

  • Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who just welcomed her second child in April, is a fan of the cloth diaper -- according to her younger brother Jake. As Jake told Conan O'Brien in February 2007, Maggie used cloth diapers on daughter Ramona, which Jake was made to change, too.

(FameFlyNet)

  • Kimya Dawson

The Moldy Peaches singer -- who contributed to the soundtrack 2007's hit flick "Juno" -- was inspired to make the album "Alphabutt" by her then two-year-old daughter.

An outspoken advocate for attachment parenting, Dawson has said: "I couldn't imagine putting my baby in a crib, and I knew that I wanted to cloth diaper, and feed her healthy foods, not use a stroller for the first many months, and carry her or have her in a sling. We don't vaccinate, and if we had had a boy we wouldn't have circumcised."

(Getty)

  • Charlotte Church

In 2007, the UK former teen sensation delivered daughter Ruby Megan Henson at home in a birthing pool -- with minimal drugs. According to OK magazine, she also breast-fed and co-slept with her daughter.

(Getty)

  • Alicia Silverstone

Followers of attachment parenting advocate organic and local foods only for their babies. Silverstone may have taken it a touch too far with her pre-chewed food feeding technique she advertised on her personal website in March, which showed her feeding son Bear Blu things like chewed "mochi and a tiny bit of veggies" mouth-to-mouth.

(Getty)
