Hashtags4Heroes Campaign Takes Unused Twitter Characters To Raise Awareness For Wounded Warriors

Donate Your Unused Twitter Characters To Support Wounded Warriors In Need

Here’s one instance where you’re better off tweeting less than 140 characters.

The Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit that empowers and helps rehabilitate injured veterans, is encouraging twitter users to “donate” their unused characters to help raises awareness for wounded veterans.

Whenever you send out a message to the world that has less than 140 characters, Hashtags4Heroes can auto-populate the rest with links, hashtags, handles and slogans that spread the word about how to help vets in need, according to a press release.

For example, when Bob Connors told his followers that he "just ate a small pizza myself #g2run5milesnow,” the remaining characters didn’t go to waste. .

His message automatically filled up with “I support wounded warriors. You should too, “ #hashtags4heroes and a link to the campaign’s official website.

Initially, the group hoped to collect 30,000 donated characters by the end of May, which is Military Appreciation Month. That goal was quickly surpassed and the campaign is now hoping to amass 300,000 characters.

"Although we can never thank our servicemen and women enough for all they do to defend our nation," Pam Wickham, Raytheon vice president of Corporate Affairs and Communications, said in the release, "this month we collectively salute them and honor all their contributions."
