Katelynn Arnold's Half-Brother Charged With Murder In 9-Year-Old's Hanging Death

By JAY REEVES 05/11/12 11:38 PM ET AP

Katelynn Arnold
The crime scene where Katelynn Arnold was found hanging in Ragland, Alabama. Her half-brother has been charged with murder in the 9-year-old's death.

RAGLAND, Ala. — When 9-year-old Katelynn Arnold didn't appear right away after one of her frequent bicycle rides along her rural Alabama road, her concerned aunt went to look for the girl.

The woman, who is the girl's foster mother, checked with a neighbor whose daughter often played with Katelynn, but he hadn't seen her. When she returned home Thursday evening, she found the girl hanged from a tree with an old tire swing rope, deliberately, authorities say, by her 14-year-old half-brother who was charged Friday with murder.

The cotton rope was tied in a simple knot around the girl's neck, but was not a hangman's noose, said St. Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles. County Coroner Dennis Russell said an autopsy found the cause of death was homicide due to ligature strangulation.

The neighbor, Ricky Campbell, could only shake his head when thinking about what happened.

"She never got a chance to grow up. Her life was taken away," he said.

The accused boy admitted to killing her by hanging, Surles said. He said the boy told investigators a motive but Surles did not release it. A call came into the sheriff's department about 8:10 p.m. Thursday and by the time investigators arrived, rescuers had removed the girl from the tree and she was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The half-siblings were living with their aunt and uncle in Ragland, a town of some 1,900 people about 40 miles northeast of Birmingham, as part of a foster home situation, Surles said. Authorities did not release their names, but Campbell identified them as Jerry and Teresa McMahan and an address search shows a couple by that name living on that road.

Campbell said the children have been staying with the couple for years and authorities had no information about their parents. It was not clear whether the state had placed the children in the care of the McMahans or if the parents had sent the pair to live there.

Several relatives who gathered at the small, white home declined to comment Friday. Yellow police tape was strung around a couple trees outside the home along a one-lane road and a small bicycle with pink handle bars was parked out front.

The boy faces juvenile charges and his name was not released. Authorities could later decide to charge him as an adult.

After the girl was found and taken to the hospital, the boy went to bed, Surles said. He was arrested between 2 and 3 a.m.

Teresa McMahan came to Campbell's house Thursday evening looking for the girl, Campbell said. She returned home and a few minutes later he heard the ambulances arrive.

Campbell said he never saw any real signs of trouble out of the accused boy.

"He'd run off and do crazy things, but I never believed he'd do something like that. It's a bad situation," Campbell said.

I would suspect incest was a motivator and her unwillingness to go along with it resulted in him killing her.

The 14 year old is a psychopath, he needs to be eliminated off this earth. He will never change.

OK, lets say this boy is mentally ill..and there are those who don't want him to end up in jail forever and get raped or whatever. Put in in a mental institution some where FAR away with other "messed up" kids and NEVER,EVER let him out. What is the difference if he goes to jail or an institution forever...after all we are still going to have to pay for it. You kill someone like this at 14...you go away for LIFE...PERIOD. For those of you whom feel I am to harsh...let him live with you and your young children!

This boy is defective. And there's NOTHING that will fix him. He needs to be put away...forever. He won't "get better" with counseling either.

"He'd run off and do crazy things" like what? Cut the paws off squirrels? Drag a kitten behind his bike until the rope frayed?

"He said the boy told investigators a motive but Surles did not release it." What motive could he possibly have? If he was mentally ill, who was supposed to diagnose that? If they were in the foster care program already, someone had to have moderated their placement. Who was that person?

There's a lot going on here that doesn't make sense. My heart goes out to the family members on this tragic loss. My daughter is 9 and I can't imagine something this distressing ever happening. It would destroy me.

Excelsior.

This boy obviously has some sort of mental issue if he's already committing such a crime at such a young age. Scary to think your own children could hurt each other like that.

I sure hope he gets charged as an adult. Yeah, he's 14 but at that age, you're not a baby, you're smart enough to know the consequences of hanging another human being. They have a motive and boy do I wish they'd share it. But just having a motive makes it basically premeditated. I'm so sick and tired of hearing about children killing others and getting off with a slap on the wrist because of their age. It needs to stop. Authority needs to show these kids that they won't necessarily get out of Juvy when they are 21. Lock him up and throw away the key. IDC anymore, I'm sick of this crap.

Sorry, Seriously77, I have to go with the lack of care for the mentally ill on this one. How could a sane boy commit this, then go home and go to sleep after she was taken to the hospital? I think there's a lot more going on here. If he was found hiding in someone's basement, that would indicate a sense of guilt and shame over it, but he went to bed. I think they may have refused to disclose the motive because it was too disturbing. It's possible.

I think the foster care system needs to be looked at a having obviously failed this little girl. I'm sure the boy is not well, but I also don't know if locking him up with child rapers and (other) murderers is the right thing to do just yet. We, the public, need more facts before condemning and ruining another young life here.

My sympathies are with the family at this point and I hope they all get the counseling they need.

Yes, Mike, he is mentally ill. But are you going to say that Jeffrey Dauhmer (sp) who ate his victims or John Wayne Gacy or so many others that were found competent to stand trial and receive the death penalty were not mentally ill? Anyone that can kill another person like this is mentally ill.... it's a matter of how far.

Horrible that this can really happen. Will the brother be charged as an adult? Surely he must be suffering from a psychological condition.

Where was Deus BEFORE this happened?

Perhaps if she had called out loud enough Deus might have reached down with his mighty hand and SAVED her.

But "he" didn't because: Deus does not exist. But if he does he lives above me in the fastest, largest whitest cloud.

I just don't think he ment to kill her, I think he goofed. He was messing around, like he does, when it went bad, it went fast, faster than he could figure out how to stop it.

Without knowing all of the facts I can only go on what I read here but he seems like he did this with the intent to kill or harm her. If it was a "goof" then he wouldnt have gone to bed afterwards like nothing happened. He could have been in shock but it seems a little too planned. Some kids are just sick and thats a really sad thing

Another thing is that he is 14. Old enough to know what happenes when you tie a rope around someone neck and hang them. Unless her neck broke she would have been struggling for quite some time. More than enough for the boy to see and understand what was happening and pull her down.

I am amused that there are those that are so specific that they can figure out what a person was thinking and doing without being that person. Example: "If it was a good then he wouldn't have gone to be afterwards like nothing happened." How do we know that? What if the kid was born with fetal alcohol syndrome, or autism? We know nothing about these kids, nor their families. How can anyone make a judgement on something they have no idea about?

I would like to think that except for the "motive" issue. The article stated that the boy had given police a motive, but it was not released. Considering that they have charged tthe boy with the murder of his half sister (while both were living with their Aunt and Uncle) make me think the police know quite a bit more than they're letting on. This is so sad and horrifying - I hope I'm wrong.

With many children in foster homes and with some adopted children there may have been abuse or neglect in their background. We adopted a boy at 15 months old, who by age 5 was diagnosed with Reactive Attachement Disorder. In these cases, the child does not form an attachment with a primary caregiver and this process is essential in forming a conscience to know right from wrong and feel empathy for others. The brains of these neglected or abused children actually form differently. This is not an exuse for their behavior, just a possible explanation. Our son was given a lot of therapy and is doing mcuh better. By age 14, as this boy is, that is pretty late and the children who have these anti-social traits so ingrained are more difficult to treat. May this precious girl rest in peace. Such a sad story.

I'm so glad that he ended up with parents like you, who adopted him knowing there existed a possibility that he would have the disorder. If not for your perseverance in getting him the therapy he needed, his life could have been very different. Blessings to you.

Can a child with no sense of right or wrong changed? In my belief they can't develop a sense of right or wrong, but these children and adults without a conscience can learn by cognitive-behavior therapy how they should function in society.
