New Zealand Crash: 3 American Students Killed, At Least 5 Injured

New Zealand Crash American Students

NICK PERRY   05/12/12 11:53 AM ET  AP

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Three Boston University students who were studying in New Zealand were killed Saturday when their minivan crashed. At least five other students from the university were injured in the accident, including one who was in critical condition.

The students were traveling in a minivan at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday near the North Island vacation town of Taupo when the vehicle drifted to the side of the road and then rolled when the driver tried to correct course, New Zealand police said.

Three of the students died at the scene, police said. Another woman was in critical condition at an area hospital, while at least four other students suffered moderate injuries.

Boston University spokesman Colin Riley said the deceased students were Daniela Lekhno, 20, of Manalapan, N.J.; Roch Jauberty, 21, whose parents live in Paris; and Austin Brashears, 21, of Huntington Beach, Calif. New Zealand police confirmed their identities.

Another BU student, Margaret Theriault, was airlifted from the crash site to a hospital in Taupo and was in critical condition, the university said.

"This is a horrible tragedy," Boston University President Robert Brown said in a statement on the website. "Our prayers go out to the students and their families. We will do all we can to provide comfort and assistance to those who have been injured, and to the families and friends of the victims. The university is mobilizing all of our resources to help our students and families deal with this tragedy."

A candlelight vigil was planned for Saturday evening at the university.

All of the students except Theriault were enrolled in a BU study abroad program in Auckland, the BU website said. Theriault was enrolled in a study abroad program in Sydney, Australia.

Sixteen students were traveling in two minivans, on their way to hike the Tongariro Crossing, a famous trek rated as one of the most spectacular in New Zealand. The hike crosses a volcanic crater in the central part of North Island.

None of the eight students in the second van was injured. Seven of those eight students were also from Boston University.

Kevin Taylor, a police official, said it was not clear why the van drifted to the side of the road. He said some of the students were thrown from the vehicle, indicating they may not have been wearing seat belts.

My Stepbrother was involved in this accident and is a BU student. Please be respectful of the 3 lives which were lost. They were friends, sons, brothers, sisters, girlfriends and family. Its not easy having one of your family injured and involved in such a tragedy and not be able to see them or get to them because they are a half a world away. They have no one there just themselves, all were visitors from out of the country. What a long arduous plane ride for the families who must travel to NZ to identify and claim the bodies of their young family members. My love goes out to you all... and to my stepbrother, cant wait till you get home, be strong, and if u need anything, anything at all I am here for you!! C-

Van was way overloaded---only a 7-passenger van and they had equipment for hiking/camping. If you have ever driven an even moderately overloaded van or car, you know that even a mild correction causes a dangerous sway. The passenger space looks pretty intact- no seatbelts in use, or there would have been more survivors. Either here or in foreign countries insist on your own safety. The driver may not like it, but so what! Someone mentioned race car drivers---they view regular streets as much more dangerous than the tracks and always wear a seatbelt, and they are the pros.

All that said, nothing will bring these young people back and our prayers and thoughts are with their families and friends this day.....

Some reports claim the van flipped three times and people were ejected from vehicle. That might suggest they were going a bit too fast. and did not wear their seat belts.

Sad - wear your belts at all times

NZ Herald:
The tragedy occurred when the students' van was travelling in convoy with another people mover around 7.30am yesterday, heading to Tongariro Crossing where they intended to tramp.

But as they approached the turn-off to the walk entrance on SH 47 near Turangi, the driver of the second vehicle drifted into gravel on the side of the road and lost control.

Police say that the driver "overcorrected" by pulling the steering wheel too hard, and the vehicle, with eight people on board, flipped more than three times.

Very sorry for these students and their families. It's bad enough having to collect your deceased loved one from a morgue or hospital near your home. I cannot imagine the pain in having to travel so far or to have them flown home. Sadly the seatbelts could have saved them. When the story says the drifted to the side of the road, you would think there was this drop off or ditch that they were trying to avoid when they over corrected. It appears to be a pretty flat shoulder and just a field with a little fence off to the side. I am sure if they would've ran off the road they would still be alive. Inexperience in driving. I know I over corrected once 23 years ago and almost went off an overpass. My front bumper was hanging off over the highway. It was my inexperience in driving. That is why I am all for the tiered drivers license they have in IL..the kids need more time at practice. RIP and prayers to the families and friends.

My husband was in an accident and came out of his seat belt. We never did figure out how - it was a shoulder/lap belt. He came out and ended up in the passenger seat up against the dashboard. It CAN happen......don't know how

Depending on the crash Arlene, speed, rollover and such, a persons body can do some strange things. I say again, depending on the crash, a persons lower or upper body can have their body mass can move inside ones skin. Meaning that his leg muscles can flatten, allowing him to slip out of his seatbelt. I'm having a hard time trying to explain this. I've seen several motorcycle accidents when the driver and passenger of the motorcycle come out of their shoes when they were laced up to the top. I have also seen pictures where the motorcycle rider (driver) had come out of his pants all because the human body does funny things when g-forces are applied. I hope that I haven't confused you too much. Did you ask the ER doctor when you had gone to the hospital? A doctor would be able to explain it better than I.

I understand what you are saying - interesting. I know it happens. No we didn't ask the doctors.
