Ken McRoyal, a wide receiver for the University of Idaho, died early Sunday morning in Los Angeles, according to various reports.

Idaho Athletic Director Rob Spear confirmed McRoyal's death in a brief statement, via the Idaho Statesman.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Kenny," Spear said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

According to KXLY.com, the 22-year-old McRoyal was shot and killed at a house party around 1:30 a.m. Police told the Kitsap Sun that McRoyal died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

The Los Angeles Times first reported the shooting, which happened at the Brewery Lofts in Lincoln Heights. The Times didn't initially report the victim's name, but said a 22-year-old man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police are reportedly investigating four suspects involved but no arrested have been made.

"It's a devastating loss," Idaho coach Robb Akey said in a statement released by the school. "We've lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today."

On Friday, McRoyal wrote on his Facebook page that he was going to California to visit his daughter.

McRoyal, who was just completing his junior year, caught six passes for 35 yards last season.

UPDATE:Police confirmed that McRoyal was shot in the upper body on Sunday at a party at the Brewery Lofts in Lincoln Heights. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

This is so sad. I really feel for the little baby girl who lost her Dad and worse how senselessly she lost him.

4 suspects and no arrests. There better be some arrests, at least for this little girl and her family.

Criminals who kill need to know they won't get away with it. Televised execution(s) may do it.

I am saddened by the death of another young person, I don't understand how people can go to a party which is supposed to be a fun occasion and end up so angry that they kill someone. In (somewhat) related note:when did we stop having parties? Why is it necessary to have "house parties"? Isn't plain old party good enough?

um, a house party is a party in a home - as opposed to a party at a club or bar.
Really not that complicated, dude.

what's the point? We used to go to parties and we also went to clubs or bars. See the difference.

Kid from New orleans go to Idaho to play football. Goes to Los Angeles to visit his kid and gets shot to death at a party at 1:30am. I'm assuming he didn't get into school on a scholastic scholarship.

When did it become acceptable behavior to take a weapon to a party? What a tragic waste.

Several generations of men no longer know how to fight. They'd rather just use a gun to protect their "dignity", such as it is.

When will our society remember that there is NO dignity or honor in bringing a knife or a gun to a one on one confrontation. If you've got a beef, settle it on the shcool grounds or in the alley after school...no gangs beating up on others, no weapons, just one on one and then shake hands and walk home in peace afterwards. This chicken shi$ gang stuff makes me sick.

Its LA, I think thats normal...

Anywhere it's "normal," no matter how small the town or city, then that is the problem. Please give me the good old days where you went out to the alley and settled it one on one with a good fight...far more direct and effective...and please, all you politically PC people out there...don't even start...a one on one fist fight is far healthier than a group of kids ganging up on a kid and beating the snot out of him or her, OR bringing knives or guns to the fight.

Tragic. Another case of someone using the 2nd Amendment to commit murder. The NRA should be proud.

Tragic indeed. Another case of someone being killed by criminal in a state with some of the most restrictive gun laws for law abiding citizens in America.
03:43 AM on 05/15/2012
As long as guns are ridiculously accessible, expect more tragedies.

I highly doubt the criminal that pulled the trigger had any thought of the 2nd amendment when the trigger was pulled or gave 2 seconds to care about the state that has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the US.
03:41 AM on 05/15/2012
Restrictive gun laws mean little while the despicable NRA pushes for gun proliferation.

If he was going to visit his daughter why was he at a house party at 1:30 in the morning? You have daughter & trying to finish college? Why weren't you working trying to support your "family"? Oh, I know, somebody else (me) is taking care of them for you. Maybe should have been more responsible by not hanging out with the gansta element.

I'll bet the "baby mama" and daughter are on some kind of public assistance...which means that you (if you have a job) and I are both taking care of her.

I'm not trying to sound insensitive because it is a horrible tragedy, but why is the headline labeled "star football player" when this paragraph is in the article.. "McRoyal, who was just completing his junior year, caught six passes for 35 yards last season." Once again, not trying to be insensitive, just feel led on, condolences to the mother and daughter
