Obama Declares 'National Women's Health Week'

Obama Womens Health

Women's health has emerged as such a major theme of the 2012 elections that President Barack Obama has dedicated a week-long celebration to it. The president proclaimed on Monday that May 13 through May 19, 2012, will now be known as National Women's Health Week.

"I encourage all Americans to celebrate the progress we have made in protecting women's health and to promote awareness, prevention, and educational activities that improve the health of all women," he said in a statement.

The announcement also gave the the president an opportunity to outline his achievements for women's health.

As President, I have made advancing gender equality in health care a top priority. Through the historic Affordable Care Act, we are reversing many of the worst abuses of the health insurance industry. Beginning in 2014, many insurers will no longer be allowed to charge women higher premiums simply because of their gender, and it will be illegal for most insurance companies to deny coverage to women because they have a pre-existing condition, including cancer or pregnancy. Health plans will also be required to cover maternity care. The law already enables women in new insurance plans to see any primary care provider or OB-GYN, or bring their children to any pediatrician in their health plan's network without a referral, and it prevents most insurance companies from denying coverage to children with pre-existing conditions.

The proclamation marks the latest in a long line of efforts by Obama and his campaign to court female voters. Earlier this month, his campaign released an online tool called "The Life of Julia," which walks users through the life of an average, middle-class woman and shows how she will benefit from Obama's health and education policies.

The president released a video on Mother's Day that played up the role of “strong, responsible women” in his life, and he is giving the commencement speech on Monday at Barnard College, an all-women's school.

Mitt Romney countered Obama's efforts by releasing a similar video that his sons made as a tribute to their mother, Ann, and by focusing on how the president's economic policies have failed women.

"I think this little cartoon they have on 'The Life of Julia' really reveals the weakness of the president’s policies," Romney told Sean Hannity on Fox News last week. "I think to have to defend your record by coming up with a cartoon character as opposed to real people suggests that he doesn’t want to talk about his record at all."

"To suggest that Republicans or that I don’t care about any dimension of our society is simply misguided," he continued. "It's wrong, it's dishonest, and I think as people watch this campaign they’ll recognize that the policies I'm promoting will help get America back to work and assure greater prosperity for our citizens."

A Word To The Wise Is Sufficient

I applaud and appreciate the progress that has been made in regards to women's health issues. But what has been done is simply not enough. More needs to and should be done to enhance and enrich the lives of all women, too. Politicians who want to dismiss the "War on Women" as some political ploy are totally missing the boat on issues that are important to women, like fair pay, what "women" choose to do with their bodies, not some bunch of haggard old men, who are clueless to their needs. Some of these politicians and legislators actions show a complete disrespect and disregard to treat women as equal, and that cannot and should not stand.

We, as men, should not merely walk aside and support the strides women have made, but be out front and make our voices heard, too, and loudly at the ballot box. Don't these apologists for their actions have wives, mothers daughters and sisters, too? Those people's actions are too cavalier and self-serving. Get behind our women. Its not only decent, but fair and honorable.

I'd fan you again, too!! Just speaking from the heart. I have all those females mentioned in my life, and I want what's is just, best and fair for them, too. It's not women who are impeding progress, as the recent hearings committee on Capitol Hill showed, its some weak-minded, neanderthal men who are trying to keep women barefoot and pregnant!! That's not right.

What I say won't change the world

Funny how talking about an issue that matters to other people, but doesn't matter to you, is so easily dismissed as pandering. "Oh, he's only saying that to get women's votes." Well, YEAH! Why wouldn't he? It also happens to be the right way to go. Obama 2, Romney 0. It's the GOP bringing up all these social issues in the first place. They're the ones trying to pander to their base. "Don't worry, we won't let those big, bad gays get ya! And we'll keep women firmly in their place!" Bill after bill is introduced by Republicans, but when the rest of us resist, all of a sudden it's a war on whatever.

And why can't the President focus on both? Why can't he tackle social issues AS WELL AS the economy? I thought multi-tasking was part of the job. Why must it be one or the other? My only hope is that when Obama gets re-elected (and he will), he'll finally realize that the only reason he hasn't been able to do all that he said he would is because he's been hoping for Republicans to help. They have no interest in seeing him succeed at anything. The sooner he accepts that, the better off we'll all be.

The last thing the GOP wants is for the rest of us to get something good from Obama. And they'll stop at nothing to keep that from happening.

It's a good video. Romney's was a sore sport idea; a real drag. Throughout Pres. Obama's term, he's been consistent with maintaining a positive outlook, and as a rule, didn't insult or say anything at anyone's expense. He's a good person and his family too. It's a great family video and they are good examples and models.

I can not believe that women are actually falling for these tricks. A national womens health week? Come on, that is so obvious that if I was a woman I would be insulted that Obama would think I was so stupid that I did not see through that. Why not a National mens health week? Are men not supposed to get any attention about our health. NO, because he wants the womens vote and he knows that women are a sucker for this kind of hype. What an insult to every woman out there with a brain.

Another one! Dude, do you people even READ your assigned talking-points before you post them? President Obama has been featuring JOBS and the ECONOMY front and center, at almost every opportunity. He wants to keep the economy moving forward -- perhaps you've heard that soundbite? The first TV ad out of the Obama campaign was all about the economy. The only reason we're even talking about gay marriage and women's health is because the GOTP keeps focusing on social legislation rather than creating jobs (can't be seen helping the economy on Obama's watch, noooooo!)

Sounds like you are a bit old school. Sounds like you prefer a society where women didn't vote, didn't work but stay in the kitchen and be told what to do. Why educate them anyway, as they will only take jobs away from men. You would have fit very nicely back in the 1950's where obedience ruled.

And yes, I'm returning your condescension with condescension. Enjoy your attack of the vapors, Mr. Clark. I suggest you recline on your fainting couch.

Obama wants to talk about ANYTHING but the economy, jobs picture, inflation, anemic growth and the reasons why! He's had well over three and a half years to figure it out and he can't and won’t because of his CONSTITUENCIES.

Really? And yet President Obama launches his reelection campaign with a 16-minute documentary about his achievements, reporting our progress in healing the economy. Funny you were too busy repeating this talking point without checking whether the President is, in fact, running on his record. Hate to take the helium from your birthday balloon, pal, but the President is doing precisely what you claim he isn't doing. Makes you look kinda unobservant. And that's the kindest word I could think of for it.
03:04 PM on 05/14/2012
Wow, so he thinks, and you also, he is doing a great job on the economy? Well, I hope he keeps speaking about the economy and how he has helped because it will only helps Mitt!

What a record, over 8% unemployment rate, anemic growth, inflation, huge debt added (well over $5-Trillion), over 23-million folks unemployed . . . please keep talking Mr. Belgium Beer, aka Mr. Class Warfare, aka Obama!

Thank you for posting, please keep it up!

That was not a 16 minute documentary, it was 16 minutes of propeganda and none of it was backed by any statistics. I can say anything I want if I do not have to prove it. Like unemployement.... its 8.1% according to Obama, yet 250,000 people dropped out of unemployment this month because they ran out of bennifits. Yet that does not show up on Obama's accomplishments. Sue, you obviously have a job or a husband that is supporting you, because your obviously not too informed about the real world.

03:17 PM on 05/14/2012
What a joke, you who believe his bull are very doltish! I can't wait for the debates, can you? He won't be able to run an ad during it! He will need to figure out how to address over 23-million folks out of work, over 8% unemployment (remember he promised less, 6% by now), almost $6-Trillion added to the debt, in record time by the way. ObamaCare, inflation and so much more.

No president in history has created Fewer Jobs that this dude. Just another RECORD he gets to claim.
