Mad Science: Giovanni Aldini, Corpse Reanimator (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated: 05/16/2012 3:52 pm

Giovanni Aldini

Giovanni Aldini may not be a household name, but his contributions to science cannot be ignored. Neither can his macabre demonstrations of the power of electricity on the human body. Aldini was a real-life "mad scientist," and it's rumored that Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" was based on his life.

Aldini is most (in)famous for his contributions to electrophysiology, or the study of electrical properties of body cells and tissues. He learned about what he called "animal electricity" or galvanism by jolting the dead bodies of humans and animals in an attempt to excite their remaining "life forces." In his own words, Aldini's goal was to "convey an energetic fluid to the seat of all sensations; distribute its force throughout the different parts of the nervous and muscular systems; produce, reanimate and, so to speak, control the vital forces: this is the object of my research, this is the advantage that I intend to collect from the theory of galvanism."

Although Aldini's public displays of corpse reanimation earned him a seat at the mad scientists' table, without his contributions, we may not have medical treatments like electroconvulsive therapy or deep brain stimulation today.

To learn more about Giovanni Aldini, "the corpse reanimator," watch the video above or read the transcript below. And don't forget to leave a comment at the bottom of the page. Talk Nerdy To Me!

Interesting article and video, Ty ..

Back when the book was written it was fairly common for people to dig up corpses and try to reanimate them, sometimes with an audience. It was believed that applying electricity to the right parts would lead to reanimation because body parts would move on contact... sooo... yeah.

-"And for this next part of the demonstration I will be taking requests from the audience as to where you want to see me place the electrodes."
*"Put it in his butt!"
**"Yeah!, Put it in his butt!!!"

At the beginning of this video, Cara stated that she wants to "squash a stereotype." She obviously meant "quash." These words are not interchangeable. Doesn't HuffPost edit their material before it is posted?

No... Squash the stereotype is a phrase used by american culture, While it may not be entirely grmmatically correct because squash is used for physical matter, it is right, and was not a mistake.

"Lots of people do it," is not an excuse that makes grammatical errors correct.

So why does this chick have to have a ring through her lip?? It's really irritating and unprofessional.

I think she connects one end of the electrodes to it, I wonder where does she connects the other end...??

If Aldini limited his experiments to corpses, fine, but when German scientist of the Third Reich began exploiting living humans victims, I draw the line. Ironically, many Nazi scientist experimented on living victims actually was based on research founded right here in the US: http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/socialsciences/ppecorino/MEDICAL_ETHICS_TEXT/Chapter_7_Human_Experimentation/Reading-Nazi-experimentation.htm

Greatest movie line ever, and highly appropriate for this story.

Morbid but probably helpful in some areas of science/biology.

Thanks I needed that chuckle. Malice is so neatly diluted with a good dollop of humor. Strombia has been banished back to the jungle to swing madly from tree to tree .....

The expiriments of mental patients, what if they were just going through a troubled phase? They would be doing harmful expiriments on normal people! And even if it was a way to cure them it still wasn't right. They were also forced to do this! It's almost like being a lab-rat slave!

Some people will turn to anything when all traditional methods fail.
Besides, how can we be sure that he experiments did not lead to methods today being used to treat paralysis or stroke damage, as well as chronic pain and mental illness? At least now, we know more about what he was investigating, so it is much more controlled and the results more focused.

You would have really been ticked at the way they used to discover things, like treatment for polio, etc. Go to bed.

Well, nothing is without its controversy. Now we know it works nonetheless. Not trying to sound so cynical, but a lot of controversy happened back in those days, and no one would have known back then what would have happened as a result. More than likely though, these people exhibited sporadic behavior over a period of their lives or a longer period of time compared to the normal person though, I would highly doubt they picked someone random that just had a bad day unless they may have been criminals.

some one always brings politics into a story that has nothing to do with POLITICS.
