NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Obama's Reelection Campaign

Naral Endorsement
Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, whose PAC endorsed Obama's reelection campaign on Tuesday.

NARAL Pro-Choice America's political action committee became the first reproductive rights group to endorse President Barack Obama's reelection effort on Tuesday. It timed the endorsement to coincide with National Women's Health Week.

Nancy Keenan, NARAL's president, told The Huffington Post that the organization's strategy moving forward is to draw a contrast between Obama's positions and those of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney on women's health and reproductive choice issues.

"The contrast is clear and it's stark," she said. "The president believes women and doctors should make medical decisions, while Mitt Romney thinks a politician should be in charge. President Obama wants to uphold a woman's right to choose, and we've heard Romney say time and time again that he wants to outlaw abortion.

"And I think most recently as well we've seen that the president made it possible for nearly every woman to get insurance coverage of contraception without a copay, and we have Mr. Romney wanting to take away that contraceptive coverage and even go further and defund family planning. The choice is clear, the contrast is stark, and we're very proud to be the first to endorse the president for reelection."

Keenan, who will be stepping down in January 2013 from her position, said the NARAL PAC will mainly be talking to women voters in battleground states in hopes of drumming up support for Obama, as well as pro-choice candidates in tight races for the House and Senate.

"Obama's been the backstop," she said. "We've been able to have him there to stop some things in the U.S. Senate and all of the rather obnoxious legislation that came out of the House, but obviously he needs some allies in defending women's reproductive rights."

NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC's anti-abortion counterpart, National Right to Life PAC, endorsed Romney in April.

"As the country's most pro-abortion president, Barack Obama has pursued a radical pro-abortion agenda,” Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, said in a statement. “It is now time for pro-life Americans to unite behind Mitt Romney. For the sake of unborn children, the disabled, and the elderly, we must win."

Interesting...The 41% of Americans who now identify themselves as "pro-choice" is down from 47% last July and is one percentage point below the previous record low in Gallup trends.

Any law proposed to limit abortion should also include stiff penalties to tobacco companies and alcohol producers should their product be consumed by a pregnant woman.. Further, the law should make it illegal for a fast food chain to knowingly sell food to a pregnant woman. Also, our country should provide no-cost prenatal heathcare. We rank 49th of all the world's countries in infant mortality...barely ahead of Belarus, Croatia, Lithuania, and Serbia. Presumably, one of the wealthiest and most developed countries in the world should know what it takes to have the lowest infant mortality rate.

Ironic that the candidate of the PAC of Cull the Fetus cannot prove he was one.

No such thing as an abortion lobby; there is a prochoice lobby and abortion is legal.

Wow! Now, there's a real shocker. The most pro-abortion president ever is endorsed by a pro-abortion organization over a pro-life republican. On this issue, Obama closely resembles the Chinese Health Minister with his "one child" policy.

Abortion is legal and protectd under the 4th amendment. Obama is no proabortion, he is prochoice, if Mitt is so antichoice, why didn't he speak out against abortion when he was governor?

We don't approve of enhanced interrogation, but we can take a baby out in a heartbeat. Or is that, we can take a heartbeat away from a baby! Sweet!

Sorry, not true. The definition of life is not when you or your church decides (and if it was up to J ewi sh a baby is not a baby till its head emerges). Science and medicine decide and the unit of measure is NOT the heart it is the brain.

It isn't even about the babies, it's about telling women what they can and cannot do.

I am a man with a granddaughter. She's only 2 years old, but this election will help determine what kind of world she grows up and lives in. Go get 'em, NARAL. You are fighting for girls far too young to vote, but who will one day benefit from your strong, decisive, continuing actions today. I have sent you some money with which to fight these modern Republicans who would take away rights so important to women, and the men who love them.

When I read comments from conservatives who are pro-life, it makes me want to out the daughters of every conservative I know who have had abortions because they were too ashamed to go to planned parenthood and get birth control. Their mothers have NO idea what's going on. Conservative young people have sex outside of marriage as early and as often as the kids of liberals do, the difference is they often go into it unprotected and uninformed—trying to keep the image of abstinence going for their parents' approval.
