Pakistan NATO Summit: President Asif Ali Zardari Will Attend Chicago Summit

Reuters  |  Posted: Updated: 05/16/2012 4:43 pm

WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS, May 15 (Reuters) - Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari will attend a summit of NATO leaders in Chicago this weekend, the Pakistan Embassy in Washington said on Tuesday, ending speculation Islamabad might be excluded from the high-level talks on Afghanistan's future.

Nadeem Hotiana, an embassy spokesman, confirmed Zardari's attendance at the May 20-21 summit, a sign Washington and Islamabad may finally be able to significantly improve ties following the NATO air strike in November that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers and prompted Pakistan to shut NATO supply routes into Afghanistan.

"This meeting will underline the strong commitment of the international community to the people of Afghanistan and to its future. Pakistan has an important role to play in that future," NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said in a statement.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is also expected to attend the meeting, where NATO nations will hone their plans to withdraw most of their troops by the end of 2014. As the Western presence ebbs, Pakistan, whose tribal areas are home to Taliban and other militants, will be key in shaping Afghanistan's future.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen suggested on Friday that Pakistan could be excluded from the summit if it failed to reopen the supply routes to Afghanistan.

Rasmussen noted that other countries providing supply routes to NATO had been invited to the summit. Pakistan boycotted an international conference on Afghanistan in Bonn in December in protest against the NATO air strikes the previous month.

Pakistan had demanded a formal apology from the United States for the border attack before it reopens the supply routes and called for an end to U.S. drone strikes on its tribal areas.

U.S. and Pakistani officials are continuing talks in Islamabad aimed at reopening those ground supply routes. Pakistan now says it expects the routes to reopen; Pentagon spokesman George Little told reporters on Tuesday that the U.S. military hoped that would occur in the "very near future."

In a statement, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani's office said ministers had backed a proposal to allow NATO to send only non-lethal equipment into Afghanistan on Pakistani roads.

"It was also decided that the military authorities should negotiate fresh border ground rules with NATO ... to ensure that (such border) incidents do not reoccur," the statement said. Conversation Peace: Boycott Shell, Halt Oil War.

Help bring humanity toward it's greater good.

"(S)peculation Islamabad might be excluded from the high-level talks on Afghanistan's future." -- conjecture that Pakistan should not be involved in conversations on Afghanistan's future is absurd -- That would be like Michigan not talking with Wisconsin about caring for Lake Michigan -- underscoring the meaning of Bob Woodward's book: State Of Denial, i.e. - the Government and Citizens of the United States.

This State Of Denial is why I call for a boycott on purchasing gasoline from Shell and Exxon, forcing a human recognizing conversation/intervention to uplift and better all humans in the now recognized global human economy. We, as a human family, are allowing Big Brother and Big Sister to go about unquestioned in gaining land and financial benefit through the atrocity of computerized industrial war as part of daily commerce: this is morally and economically corrupt behavior. Civilians far outnumber Troops killed, maimed, and displaced by modern war; current focus of resources and human talents to serve the short term profit ambitions of Big Brother and Big Sister is destroying communities of the US inner city, and other Ghettos and Refugee camps around the world -- the heaviest cost being carried by women and children (see Housing Is A Human Rights, Thou Shall Not Kill, Detroit campaigns: witnessing respectively: 46,000 children w/50-100% of income taken away; children being killed and wounded by stray bullets that have become a "normal" aspect of communities long Forgotten in America): also For The Troops!

Think of all the tax cuts for the rich the USA would have been able to afford over the last decade if we were not giving billions to Pakistan . . . for nothing but problems in return
04:46 AM on 05/16/2012
What is given to P@k|$tan is peanuts compared to what is spent in @fgh@nistan and |r@q.

Besides, I'd wager the U$ had to sweeten the deal for P@k|$tan to partake in this misadventure in @fgh@ni$tan

@ Brutus
The money USA gives to Pakistan is not because she has a soft corner for Pakistan or she is a true friend of Pakistan. That money is given as a bribe to the leaders like Musharaf and Zardari.. its is NOT spent in Pakistan for any welfare or on public of Pakistan. It goes in the bank accounts of such puppet rulers... and USA gets more benefits than she spends on such puppets... example?? soon you will see the NATO supply route being opened against the will and desire of the Pakistani public but just to make USA keep filling their bank accounts on the other hand what USA gives is just peanuts comparing how much money they will safe by using other routs for NATO supplies. Those billions are nothing but a curse to the public of Pakistan and they want to get rid of that cursed money and a friend like USA.

Our ally Israel is not invited due to 'scheduling problems' and the two-faced (more like multi-faced) Pakistanis ARE! Genius, Mr. Obama. Why don't we INCREASE our aid to Pakistan perhaps we can fund a new cultural center for retired Taliban in Abottabad, where OBL 'secret' hideout was? What is wrong with us???? This IS embarassing and backwards unless you are anti-American!

Didn't know Israel was SO important that not inviting it would make one an Anti American.

You know why all this pretending why not move DC to Tel aviv and let the Zionist run the country openly, they are doing it it anyway.
10:30 PM on 05/15/2012
season555: Most ISRAELIS are not Zionists. But Israel is a more important strategic partner and ally than Pakistan, that is the point and by the way Tel Aviv is NOT the capital of Israel, it's Jerusalem. If you believe that 'Zionists' are running the US you must live in a cave. IBM, Microsoft, Google and a thousand other high-tech start-ups dot the Israeli landscape and share technology, information and a wide range of trade equal only to Europe and Japan. None in Pakistan or any Islamic country. Your ignorance is as stunning as your bigotry...and please don't reply!
