Shaun Winkler, White Supremacist, Has Poor Showing In Idaho Sheriff Race

SALMON, Idaho, May 15 (Reuters) - A white supremacist who ran a long-shot campaign for sheriff in Idaho was trailing far behind his incumbent opponent late on Tuesday, according to early returns in the three-way race for the Republican nomination.

Shaun Winkler, an avowed Ku Klux Klan member and convicted batterer, had received only 40 votes in northern Idaho's Bonner County, versus 1,072 votes for incumbent Sheriff Daryl Wheeler, with 10 of 33 precincts reporting.

Tim Fry, a police officer, had 353 votes.

Winkler, 33, attracted national attention for a campaign that culminated earlier this month with a cross burning on his northern Idaho property near Priest River and a pledge to crack down on sexual predators and illegal drugs.

Winkler's supremacist sentiments, in which he has derided Jews and African-Americans, have sparked outrage in the Idaho Panhandle, where local leaders and human rights activists have struggled to shake off decades-old stereotypes of the area where the late Aryan Nations leader Richard Butler sought to establish a "white homeland." Winkler was one of Butler's trusted aides.

Bonner County Republican chair Cornel Rasor said the area, once tied to logging and mining but which now promotes tourism, was dedicated to dispelling the myth that it welcomes hate-mongers.

"The philosophy of racism and racial superiority is not acceptable here," Rasor said.

"It's frustrating that a community made up of so many unsung heroes - volunteer firefighters and emergency workers - has been damaged by people like Mr. Winkler, who know how to get media attention."

Thomas Carter, head of the Human Rights Education Institute in neighboring Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, said outbursts by Winkler and others like him would not distract the region from its goals.

"We have the same mission we've always had: respect for one another and dignity for all," Carter said.

Winkler could not be reached for comment. (Editing by Cynthia Johnston and Paul Simao)

Mr. Winkler received bad political advice. Instead of running as just another Republican, he should have secured the endorsement of the Tea Party.

What exactly about being white is "supreme"?

Having lived in Idaho for the last 15 years, I've marveled at how this state has pandered to minorities just to try to lose the "racist" stigma. Renaming streets and parks after black people, constructing Ann Frank memorials. Doesn't seem to be working out so well though.

How can you say that with the results from the election in the story above?

What I'm saying is that outsiders still look at Idaho as a racist state.

I guess his brother Darryl, and his other brother Darryl won't be needing that reproduction of the General Lee after all. They were so close to becoming the Hazard boys of Bonner County.

A white supremacist who ran a long-shot campaign for sheriff in Idaho...in the three-way race for the Republican nomination.

Curiously he's running for the republican nomination NOT the Democratic nomination...go figure. Now what would make a white supremacist think he'd have a chance at being elected as a Republican?
12:26 AM on 05/17/2012
There are fellows just like him already there, that's why he chose Repub. Why would you ask Democrat? They've been in both parties in the past, but it is the Repubs/Tea Party in particular this time around that has shown the extremist elements--being 'patriots', as they prefer to call themselves. That's the stuff that appeals to them. Anti-gay, lax gun laws, all the ugly negativism stuff that has been said by candidates and that's been in the news. The SPL has plenty about this. www.splcenter.org I try to stay neutral about this but this election stuff has been way out of control and pretty disgraceful if you ask me. Just saying...

Yeah...it's pretty obvious that if you're a bigot you go where you are comfortable politically and feel wanted.

Maybe because the Republicans keep inviting them to speak at their CPAC's? They feel right at home

We used to go camping in the summer at Priest Lake, Idaho. Gorgeous scenery. It's sad to know that such ugliness has taken root in what, to me, was a virtual heaven on earth. Well, I hope it hasn't really taken root, however, I do wonder why the Northwest seems to be such a haven for these human insects. I can't help but assume that it is because these insects crave shadows and hiding places like roaches. I also think that the reason they become white supremacists is because they can't deal with being ordinary and common. They aren't special and pick this way to fool themselves into a false sense of superiority. And, for some reason, just about all the men I see on the news seem to have facial blemishes or scars from previous acne. They were probably bullied as children and have now become bullies themselves. No matter what the reason for the way they are, the result is the same. Human bathtub scum.

Wow he looks the part and he thinks he's superior. Go figure.

This guy like many others peoples in America have the inferiority complex. Take note: cyber-bullying and slander is going on rampant with kids as much as adult, all using the same medium.
