Capital Bikeshare Set To Hit 2 Millionth Trip (UPDATED)

Big Milestone For Capital Bikeshare

WASHINGTON -- Capital Bikeshare is expected to soon record its 2 millionth trip, well-timed for Friday's Bike to Work Day.

Thursday morning, Bikeshare reported that it's getting close to the big milestone.

The popular bike-sharing service, launched in September 2010, has been anticipating the 2 millionth ride:

We are thrilled to be quickly approaching an enormous milestone here at Capital Bikeshare--2 million trips taken! We can’t thank our members enough for believing in this service and it has truly been amazing to see the type of impact that a transit system like Capital Bikeshare can have on a community. It seems like just yesterday we took our inaugural ride from the Department of Transportation headquarters out to our initial 114 stations.

Capital Bikeshare now has more than 160 stations and 1,525 bikes in the District of Columbia and Arlington County. There are plans to expand the system in those jurisdictions -- including on the Capitol campus -- in addition to elsewhere in D.C.'s Maryland and Virginia suburbs.

UPDATE, 5 p.m., Thursday: It's official. The 2 millionth trip was taken Thursday afternoon.
