Donna Summer Lung Cancer: Disco Legend's Condition, Explained

Donna Summer Lung Cancer

Disco legend Donna Summer has passed away at age 63, from what news reports say was a battle with lung cancer.

TMZ reported that Summer was private about her illness, and that there may have been a connection between debris from 9/11 and her lung cancer:

TMZ has learned ... Donna died from lung cancer. Several sources are telling us Donna believed she contracted it by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attack in New York City.

However, there are very few details about Summer's cancer, or if there were any complications that were involved with her death.

The family of the "She Works Hard for the Money" singer issued a statement, AFP reported, which said: "While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."

Lung cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States, according to the Mayo Clinic. The National Cancer Institute reports that there have been 226,160 new cases of lung cancer so far this year, and 160,340 deaths from the disease.

The cancer occurs when tumors form in lung tissue, most commonly in the cells that line the air passages, according to the National Cancer Institute. There are two main types: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer tends to be more aggressive than non-small cell lung cancer, according to Cedars Sinai.

Risk for the disease is highest among smokers, according to the Mayo Clinic, though lung cancer can also occur in never-smokers, too.

In fact, there is some research to suggest that lung cancer in smokers may actually be a separate disease from lung cancer in never-smokers; a study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference last year suggested that there are DNA differences in the tumors from lung cancer in smokers and lung cancer in nonsmokers, LiveScience reported.

Researchers said at the World Conference on Lung Cancer that it can also be caused by exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas and other carcinogens, as well as air pollution, the American Cancer Society reported. Family history may also play a role.

Older people are more likely to develop lung cancer than young people, with 80 percent of lung cancers occurring in those ages 60 and older, according to MacMillan Cancer Support.

That's supported by a chart on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website that reveals an increase in lung cancer prevalence as we age. The chart on its site calculates lung cancer risk based on current age. For example, 2.29 percent of men -- around two or three for every 100 men -- who are currently age 60 will go on to develop lung cancer in the next 10 years. However, that increases to 7.6 percent of men -- around seven or eight for every 100 men -- when looking ahead to the next 30 years.

Recently, "Big Love" actor Luke Askew and former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno also died of lung cancer.

Nice! The article failed to mention whether Donna was ever a smoker.

That is so tragic! She kind of faded off the radar and now her death has put on her top again. I just wish we had been informed on how she was doing before now. I did not know she was sick. My condolence to her family. This is indeed sad. I do believe death in a transition to another realm of existence, so hope she is in a better place!

The article didn't say she didn't smoke, either. That was the nature of my question: Did she or did she not smoke?
The article is really sub-par for not addressing that.

Not everyone with cancer smoked cigarettes! So what is your point exactly?

I was compiling data to do an exhaustive study. I justed added your comment, too. You may be considered for a Nobel Prize in medicine for your contribution; either that, or maybe after they flip a coin.

One of the tragedies is that lung cancer remains underfunded compared to other cancers because of the perception that only smokers get it, and that it's then somehow less tragic.

Every cancer is terrible and no one deserves to get any of them.

Oh, my goodness yes! It's the most underfunded for cancer research. Plenty of people that don't smoke get it too.
11:58 AM on 05/19/2012
And plenty that DO smoke DON'T get it.

I'll be 57 in August. I've smoked since I was 18 and in the Marine Corps. At one point, I was smoking 5 packs a day. Until most recently, I smoked over a pack a day, then dropped to an average of 4 cigarettes a day.

About 6 months ago, my new doctor, a naturopathist, sent me for chest X-rays because of my smoking. Those X-rays showed both clear lungs and a normal heart with no enlargement or any other abnormalities.

The bottom line? I'm inclined to agree with the research that demonstrates that there is a hereditary factor to cancer susceptibility.

Oh, and I am trying to quit smoking. Dropping to for cigs a day from over a pack a day was a major step for me.

she didn't smoke

You gotta love how they pulled that comment from TMZ but failed to also include the comments from her friends saying she was a smoker and of course, sang in clubs that back in the day allowed smoking. :p

My favorite Donna Summer song is Mac Atrhurs Park.

"Spring was never waiting for us 'til it ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance

MacArthurs park is melting in the dark
All the sweet green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again, oh, no."

Oh no is right! I was 21 years old in 1976 and thought I'd be forever young. Her passing makes me think of my own mortality and the inevitable. The 1970's are irreplaceable and so is the melodic voice and unique personailty of Donna Summer. I'm saddened and she will be missed. Rest in peace diva!

Her musical sound was heavily influenced by Giorgio Moroder who gave us "I Feel Love" and "Munich Machine."

I danced many a night away to Donna's music, and they were some of the best times in my life. RIP Donna. You were a great entertainer.

I wonder if she could have died of adenocarcinoma of the plural cavity. This type of cancer killed my Dad. It is very agressive and is caused by one of two problems - having inhaled asbestos particles or fumes from ink from old printers (from the 50's). If she thought that she got it from toxic particles after 9/11, it is entirely possible.

Fumes from old printers? Huh. My best friends dad died of a very aggressivve form of lung cancer and he worked for a major newpaper as a printer in the 1960s. I'll have to mention that to him. Thanks for the info

Anyone that lives in a metro area is suseptable to lung cancer. In 1976, in the air force, we left out of Savannah, Ga. headed to Puerto Rico for training. After take off the C130 had to bank around Savannah for a south east direction. I will never forget what I saw, there was a huge dome of smog over the city. The only thing missing was the handle on the top.

Regardless of what Donna Summer passed away with, if it were not meant for her to have passed over, she would not have. There will be a time for everyone to do the same, hopefully her transition was easy for her and family as well.

What a flippant, insensitive, and ignorant rationale. Who is anyone to say that someone dying (of a horrible disease, no less) was "meant to" do so? Ms. Summer's children and grandchildren probably aren't thinking "yeah, it was her time to go."

This is literally someone's life that ended, not metaphorical pawn in some game.

DPG1976, how do you know that her experience was as you say horrible? Do you know that for a fact DPG1976? no I am sure you don't know that. If you have not figured out DPG1976 your came into this earth plane, and one day you will leave it, so until then I suggest you enjoy it as long as you can, because when the time comes for you to die, you won't be able to hide under your bed,run to your mother to protect you from the boogy man, or hide in your closet. I hope you will accept it with grace and ease and move on. Have a great day DPG1976
