New Evidence Released In Trayvon Martin Case May Complicate Public Debate (UPDATE)

New Trayvon Martin Evidence

The debate about what happened the night of Trayvon Martin's death is becoming increasingly complex after details of the investigation, including new information about shooter George Zimmerman's injuries and the screaming heard on 911 recordings, were released Thursday.

The State Attorney's Office officially disclosed a hefty collection of court documents including 67 CDs of witness statements, 911 calls, non-emergency calls, photos and surveillance videos, WESH Orlando reports.

Zimmerman has been charged with killing an unarmed Martin the evening of Feb. 26 in the gated community where Martin's father's girlfriend lived in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer called 911 and told a police dispatcher that Martin, who was returning from a trip to a nearby convenience store, "looked suspicious." After an altercation, Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest, subsequently telling local police that he acted in self-defense.

Zimmerman has since been released on bond. The case is expected to go to trial.

The Associated Press reported the following details based on the newly released material:

  • Autopsy results show Trayvon Martin had marijuana in his system and that he was shot through the heart at close range.
  • George Zimmerman had a broken nose, bruises and bloody cuts on the back of his head. "Bleeding tenderness to his nose, and a small laceration to the back of his head. All injuries have minor bleeding," paramedic Michael Brandy wrote about Zimmerman's injuries in the report.
  • The lead investigator called for Zimmerman's arrest in a report written March 13, a month before the actual arrest. The investigator, Christopher Serino, told prosecutors the fight could have been avoided if Zimmerman had stayed in his vehicle. He said Zimmerman could have identified himself to Martin, then talked to him, rather than confronting him. There is no evidence Martin was involved in any criminal activity, Serino said.
  • Serino wrote in a report that he played a 911 call for Martin's father, Tracy, in which screams for help are heard multiple times. "I asked Mr. Martin if the voice calling for help was that of his son," the officer wrote. "Mr. Martin, clearly emotionally impacted by the recording, quietly responded 'no.'" Zimmerman's father also listened to the recording and told investigators on March 19 that it was his son yelling for help. "That is absolutely positively George Zimmerman," Robert Zimmerman said. "He was not just yelling, he sounded like he was screaming for his life."
  • An unnamed woman told an investigator in a police interview that she stays away from Zimmerman because he's racist and because of things he's done to her in the past, but she didn't elaborate on what happened between them. "I don't at all know who this kid was or anything else. But I know George, and I know that he does not like black people. He would start something. He's very confrontational. It's in his blood. We'll just say that," the woman says in an audio recording.
  • An unnamed man told investigators said he worked with Zimmerman in 2008 for a few months. The man, who described his heritage as "Middle Eastern," said Zimmerman bullied him at work. Zimmerman wanted to "get in" with the clique at work who did not like the man, so Zimmerman exaggerated a Middle Eastern accent, and made reference to terrorists and bombings when talking about him. "It was so immature," said the employee, who complained to management about Zimmerman. Zimmerman's parents say he wasn't racist. They said he mentored black students and had a black relative.

Whether the latest evidence will prove beneficial to the defense or the prosecution remains unclear.

According to details leaked from an autopsy report Wednesday and confirmed by the evidence Thursday, Martin's death was caused by a single gunshot wound to the chest, NBC News reported. One legal expert said the distance between Zimmerman and Martin at the time of the shooting will inevitably be key for both sides at trial.

"Time and space are often critical determinants in self-defense cases," Ronald Carlson, professor at University of Georgia Law told The Huffington Post Black Voices. "Defendants often are at an advantage by saying 'the attacker was very close to me, I was in imminent danger of death.'"

"If the [medical examiner] who will testify for the state comes toward the shorter range, that's not necessarily inconsistent with Zimmerman's account. But if we're out at 4 feet, then that's going to be very helpful to the prosecutor. If the evidence suggests that the person was not as close, then that puts the kibosh on the defendant's story."

Information from Martin's autopsy report was leaked just one day after medical records from Zimmerman's family physician, specifying his injuries following the attack were released. Those injuries also were confirmed Thursday.

Carlson said those details align with Zimmerman's account of the confrontation. "The damage to Zimmerman is clearly corroborated by the injuries, the location and the severity," he said. "Clearly, there was a big conflict going on."

But Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Martin’s family, said the Zimmerman medical reports raise more questions than answers.
ā€œYou have to take all of this in full context,ā€ Crump told The Huffington Post this afternoon. ā€œWhen someone leaks information they do it for a reason. Someone is trying to manipulate and bolster George Zimmerman’s self-defense claims.ā€

A number of points remain troubling, Crump said, including the fact that Zimmerman visited his family doctor the day after the shooting.

ABC News reported on Wednesday that Zimmerman sought an appointment with his family doctor to get legal clearance to return to work, which Crump said is a clear indication that Zimmerman was not as badly hurt as he claimed.

Leaked details also revealed Zimmerman was taking the prescription drugs Adderall, which is prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, and Temazepam, an insomnia medication, said Crump.

ā€œHe was on uppers and downers at the same time,ā€ the attorney said. ā€œThese are medications that can cause side effects such as agitation, delusions and mood swings. That’s what he was on prior to the shooting. The question becomes, did those drugs have an effect on George Zimmerman the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin?ā€

ABC News also reported that the teen had traces of the drug THC, which is found in marijuana, in his system the night of the shooting.

As for the trial itself, Carlson said it could be a challenge for the prosecution simply because Zimmerman is the only witness to Martin's death. "The story line is going to be set first and foremost by the surviving party," he said. "It's not insurmountable, but it certainly gives the edge in the opening stages to the defense."

If I am being folllowed and I HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING WRONG, I will stand my ground and hope my attacker does not confront me, because if he does...human nature requires action! I would NOT run, because running is a sign that I did something wrong. I would fight to the bitter end. I believe Trayvon feared for his life. Zimmerman's first and biggest mistake was that he followed Martin when the depatcher CLEARLY TOLD HIM... NOT TO DO THAT (the fact) Secondly, Zimmerman got out of the car (the fact). Zimmerman was wrong -- point blank! And, if Zimmerman did NOT have a gun, Martin would be alive today beacuse backup was called (the fact!). If the shoe were on the other foot, I wonder want Zimmerman would have done? If Martin had shot and killed Zimmeran in a black neighbordhood; first and foremost, the case would have gotten little or no media attention. If there were a trial, in the ole' day... the verdict phrase would be: HANG HIM HIGH!. Today, he'd probably get life or the DEATH PENALTY! Babies are not born prejudice. Prejudice is often instilled from birth to youth to adulthood. Martin couldn't help that he happened to be a young black man sterotyped by a stubborn, overzealous, wanna-be officer, like Zimmeran, who happened to be trigger-happy, on the day of the incident. F A C T !!!!

What was he doing out of his truck? The police were on their way.********* He had every right to be out of his truck. Anyone has a right to approach a suspicious stranger in his own neighborhood and ask what he's doing there. This is not stalking. If he was " stalking", then George Zimmerman is one of the rare stalkers who notifies the police before he commits his crime !

Z is one of those not so rare wanna-be "cops". He had the Neighborhood watch class that says to not approach or confront anyone, but to call the police. He thinks the rules are for everyone else. And anyway, how did we get here from my comment about Z in shackles?

But in the end TM was not suspicious nor a stranger. A black man walking in the rain with a hoodie on to keep his head dry is suspicious? Good thing this ain't the 40's or 50's or you would have lynched him.

The simple reason why you profile is that you are a raCCist.

Yah know im sorry this kid died, but blacks in this country need too know why we profile..simple we have too many black youths commit alot of the crime in this country our prisons are full of them theres evidence right there..black neighborhoods are always a highcrime area an dirty..not all blacks are like this i work with some good ones, but a majority of the younger ones are criminals plain and simple...we are leary of them we all have to be..i work hard for what i have an want my kids to be able to play and live without fear of being a victim of some senseless bs ..maybe this kid was a good kid i dont know.. all the robberies there they said was done by blacks..i would profile trayvon also ....

Should we profile white males driving rental vans near government buildings?
Should we profile white males with pop bottles in the front seat of their car?(meth)
Should we profile white females (15-25) when they go shopping?
Should I profile every cop that pulls me over?
I live in a well to do area, but honestly, God as my witness, I have seen more crime where I live now compared to the hood I moved out of. I work with some good white people, but with the experiences I have had w/ whites, every time a situation arises thats negative, I gotta ask my self,"Is it me or the color of my skin?". Where I live, I am the minority, I have heard some horrible stories about white kids doing bad things to black kids. I got this info from white mothers in the area, and at separate times they said to me,"Protect your children". So you profile Trayvon, but he could have been my son. You have been programmed to think and act that way and don't even know it. Continue to live in fear over someone who ain't even thinking about you. Don't be surprised that while you are looking at someone black, someone white will commit a crime against you.
11:16 PM on 06/04/2012
no we shouldnt..because our prisons arent full of white males driving vans near government buildings or white teenagers who went shopping...there full of young black males who commit alot of crime in this country..not all black youths are bad but our prisons say alot of them are...i lived in florida i saw what went on in the hood it was on the news everynight..blacks killing blacks, blacks robbing stores.etc etc. whites commit crime to "popbottle with meth in it" as you call it, but this is nowhere close to the level of crime young black males bring to the streets.. society is tired of it..

it seems from the evidence that Mr. Martin did assault Mr. Zimmerman but it seems that Mr. Zimmerman started the affair. The evidence supports this as Mr. Martin called his girl friend to say that some guy was following him. Mr. Martin then defended himself when Mr. Zimmerman got out of his truck to find out where Mr. Martin was. I say that Mr. Martin stood his ground and defended himself against a man that had followed him though the community and then came out of his truck to confront him. Mr. Martin was standing his ground he did not start the events Mr. Zimmerman put them in place Mr. Martin was just defending himself against a threat. A threat that had gone on for several minutes. Mr. Martin may have over reacted and maybe should have backed off and continued on his way. But it seems that according to the law he was defending himself against a threat to his safety. Mr. Martin paid the price for being a better boxer than Mr. Zimmerman but Mr.Zimmerman started it and finished it.

You would have us believe a 5' 9' huffing and puffing out of shape desk jockey, while on the phone to 911, managed to catch up with and corner a 6' 2" in shape high school football player? And then he threw his nose into Martin's fist, threw himself on the ground, and repeatedly slammed his own head onto the ground in some diabolical attempt to lure the "angelic" Trayvon Martin over to help him ... which according to witnesses, Martin "did" by bashing Zimmerman's head onto the concrete (sone new kind of first aid?) ... and this whole plan was for the sole purpose of shooting some stranger walking in the neighborhood? There is one reason, and only one reason, the two men wound up face to face -- the swift in shape Martin WANTED TO CONFRONT ZIMMERMAN. Being watched does not give anyone the right to throw a sucker punch and then jump onto his fallen and already defeated victim in an attempt to kill him. Martin had a choice to flee or fight. He made the wrong choice and died in the act of committing a second vicious attack on the same helpless crime victim (the first attack was the sucker punch that Martin broke Zimmerman's nose with). Your post defends a vicious criminal whose life was never in danger since he was capable of running away from trouble in seconds, but instead Martin chose to start trouble. Shame on you for "rationalizing" a vicious criminal attack.

I'd say honestly the most damning piece of evidence that Zimmerman is guilty is the fact that he blatantly lied by claiming he was right next to his truck when the confrontation occurred when even a cursory look at the map shows that the confrontation actually took place out of sight of the truck at least 100 yards away.

"Could have".

According to natureboy and some others it's against the law to not identify yourself.

They and Serino should have a talk about that and his wording.

YES.  We agree that he could have and should have, but it was immensely important to him to jump the gun on the police, and execute this boy himself.  It only took him THREE minutes from disconnecting from the police to do so.

Full 22 min interview with Dee Dee, April 2, 2012, is on this web site in the comments section that follows the article. UTube photo of Dee Dee very visible. In this interview she states that Martin says that he (Martin) is very near his papas house and he (Martin) was going to stop running and walk because ā€œhe (Martin) lost him (Zimmermn).ā€ And, that in ā€œa couple of minutesā€ Zimmerman caught and approached him (Martin). If this is true, the Martin’s body should lie very close to his papa’s home. If Zimmerman’s account is true (TM approached him while GZ was on his way tack to his truck), then Martin’s body would lie a considerable distance from Martin’s papa’s home and closer to Zimmerman’s truck.

That's a lot of speculation on your part. TM could be closer to GZ's truck because he continued to stalk him in his truck before he jumped out. Also since the kid didn't live in those apartments he may not have known exactly where he was.

If he can find his way to buy candy, he can find his way home. The thought of a 17 year old getting lost on his way home from the store is hard to believe. Plus, he told his gf that he was "close by" his dad's home and was no longer going to run, but walk. So, he knew where he was. According to what I understand Z parked and followed TM, TM ran and "lost' him, was close to dad's home so started walking. It was a 2 min 24 sec from the time that Z stopped running after TM until the phone call ended. If TM's body was less than a 2 min 24 sec walk from the truck, there is no way he got there without turning back.

I've thought about this a lot, it keeps bothering me. I think Travon jumped Zimmerman. If this was deliberate, he sure is one cool customer. He would have had to set the stage perfectly. Summoning the police ahead of time takes a lot of brass. I wouldn't think Zimmerman is either that smart or that ballsy. I could be wrong. You never know what another person is thinking. Nobody knows anybody really. If Zimmerman is a murderer he is a very smart and calculating one. I don't see that in his background. Could the real George Zimmerman be hidden behind a false persona? Not likely. He would have to be a complete sociopath and there aren't that many of them (thank God). He would have to be insane to risk the number of potential witnesses! And then why the physical contact? Letting Trayvon get that close - nobody would do that on purpose. This whole thing looks accidental - amateurish. The single shot to the heart -unlikely unless it was an accident. My grand father always told me not to make one perfect shot. "You first shot put's him down. Your second shot, to the head, finishes it. Always - put one in the brain. He must have told me that a hundred times over the years. Those are my thoughts. I don't think Zimmerman is a criminal master mind. Travon was a young and impulsive kid. Unless we are dealing with a very different George Zimmerman than what he
04:38 PM on 05/29/2012
There are at least a half dozen people who have described GZ as mentally disturbed. He beat up his former girlfriend twice. He worked for a security company that fired him for physically abusing the clients (his coworker said he was the nicest guy until you defied him - I'm paraphrasing). He had a road rage incident with one guy that ended up with police contact and there was another coworker that George harassed and picked on relentlessly with racial slurs and stereotypically mocking. He may have shock this child accidentally but it stems from his unbalanced nature and his inability to be defied. If you listened to the 911 tapes you heard him say "they always get away with it" implying that he was aggravated because he didn't think the police officers would arrive in time to confront this kid. I think that this kid reacted the way a lot of people would react if a stranger stalked and approached them. I tell my kid to make as much noise as possible to alert people. To not let the person grab you and to fight as hard as you can to keep them from taking you to a secondary location. That is always what women and children are told to do if a stranger approaches by personal security experts. I don't know how people don't see this. I don't care that he was a 6 ft kid. He was a kid.
04:42 PM on 05/29/2012
Meant to say he may have SHOT this kid accidentally not SHOCKED. Also left out that GZ had an arrest that had something to do with a physical confrontation with police, resisting arrest or something. And keep in mind that his father is a former judge and his mother works in the courts in Sanford. If he were a normal person he would have been arrested on the night he killed this kid.
