Norman Rousseau, Foreclosure Victim, Commits Suicide During Wells Fargo Lawsuit

Norman Rousseau

Last Saturday night, Norman Rousseau reportedly spent hours trying to fix an old RV. He was facing the prospect of foreclosure, and he wasn't about to see his family forced onto the street. Then mid-morning, with the RV’s engine in pieces, he shot and killed himself, CBS Los Angeles reports

Rousseau, who lived in Newbury Park, California, has left a wife and stepson to deal with an ongoing battle with Wells Fargo, according to a lawsuit filed in January 2011 by Norman and his wife, Oriane (h/t Alternet).

“Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Mr. Rousseau at this difficult time. The eviction has been postponed and we will continue to work with Mrs. Rousseau," a Wells Fargo spokesperson said to The Huffington Post in an email. "Despite current reports, we tried repeatedly to find affordable options for the family."

The trouble started when the Rousseaus refinanced their mortgage, finding out much later that their interest rate actually increased after they did so, the lawsuit states. On top of that, the lawsuit claims that the couple was convinced to roll their credit card debt into the loan, ostensibly prolonging and increasing that debt as well, according to Chris Gardas, the attorney representing the Rousseau family.

At the time, the deal "tasted like honey" to Rousseau, who believed she and her husband had made a solid financial decision, Gardas told The Huffington Post.

Then in May 2009, Wells Fargo allegedly denied it had received the Rousseaus payment for that month. Later, the bank would change its story, blaming the mix-up on putting a stop on the couple's check, CBS Los Angeles reports.

What ensued were repeated and inaccurate requests for payment from Wells Fargo, along with excessive fees and a denied loan modification, according to the lawsuit. That climaxed in a lockout that appears to have led Norman Rousseau to his death, according to the lawsuit. The eviction has now been delayed two weeks, according to the family's attorney.

Oriane has no desire to stay in the home that's the scene of her husband's suicide, the family's lawyer says. She's living in a hotel paid for by local church members but, should that support run out, she may be forced to return until evicted.

Norman Rousseau now counts among the victims of the foreclosure crisis driven to tragic ends. Just last week, a Connecticut woman facing foreclosure shot her 85-year-old mother before turning the gun on herself, The Hartford Courant reports. The event is sadly reminiscent of a senior Ohio couple who, also facing foreclosure, were found with fatal gunshot wounds.

Wells Fargo has originated a third of all residential U.S. mortgages, the most in the country and triple the share of the runner-up, JPMorgan Chase, according to Bloomberg. The bank is also one of five that agreed to pay a $25 billion settlement over allegations of mortgage fraud. It recently received a $3.1 million fine for “highly reprehensible” behavior related to one Louisiana man’s mortgage.

Wells Fargo isn't likely to suffer similar punitive damage here, the family's lawyer told The Huffington Post. "Instead, everybody just says they're doing their job."

As of last night, Mrs. Rousseau told Gardas that she has yet to hear personally from a Wells Fargo spokesperson.

These banks are just obscene.
It was recently reported that over 700 active duty servicemen & women were ILLEGALLY foreclosed on while they were overseas.
Millions have been duped by mortgage fraud.
And the House & Senate RepubliSCAMS are still trying to block the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which would stop this from happening again.

SICKENING.

Criminal bank Executives should be brought up on charges, convicted and sent to prison for the rest of their lives, immediately.

Banks cheat. I have a relative who was trying to refinance in 2009, and the bank kept claiming that she was missing this or that form and had to start over. She submitted paperwork five times and had receipts from FedEx to prove it.

Wells Fargo and all the Big banks to blame here. Istead of taking there bail out money and using it for the good of the people they fired people and wrote them big fat checks and on top of then paid people retention bonuses because the people were so valuable they could not be replaced. Those are the same Jackasses that caused he mess with there 5 and 1 arm that wrecked this nation. What a absolute shame. People are killing themselves as the CEO's of the banks suck down drinks and dance the night away. Real good priorities in the nation.

Working in litigation at one of the big five (not Wells) and am trying to make a difference. Trying to slow the process for those who have hung on and not walked away. As long as you request assistance they will review you for the modification repeatedly. Now you can request the DOJ review if you are still living in the home. Just remember once you leave you are never going back and you loose access to the process by not living in the home. I see so many signs of criminal activity everyday and makes me sick that no one was ever punished...Some of them still work at the Banks. What is wrong with this picture?

When I hear the name Morgan...I think of the 5 part youtube series called Zeitgeist which describes very clearly how the Rothchilds, Morgans, and others control the American banking system. This evil virus has spread over the last 100 years and Canada is no different. I'm sorry to hear of your loss...your fellow citizen of your country who took his life. (I am from Canada)

A bankster, loan officer, bank CEO, and bank whatever job position..., should come up on the FBI criminal background check. They are the worse crooks of all. SOB's!

Perhaps one of the best things to do, if you have any kind of savings, is to pull it out of Wells Fargo and their counterparts, and go to local banks and/or credit unions and deposit your money there. Do all your banking from those institutions rather than the likes of Wells Fargo, Chase, etc. Saw them wrap my son around their finger a time or two, and he finally got away from them.

Do you think moving your piddly savings acct to a credit union is going to spank the big banks for stealing people's homes and ruining their lives? What's a savings account? I can barely pay rent at $1,500.00 per month when my house payment would have been under $1000.00.

I understand you are angry. Getting angry at me accomplishes nothing does it? I meant to say savings and/or checking. Say, don't feel bad. I have exactly $189.82 in my savings. I'm not doing well due to many health problems, family and just poor planning, but I accept my part. However, if we ALL start to pull whatever monies we have out of those big banks and go to the local banks, it might make a statement. It might be our own "Occupy.." Understand now?

I am still shaking after reading the post about Mr. Rousseau and his foreclosure. When I saw that this happened in Newbury Park, CA I couldn't be quiet any longer. I was forced to sell my own home because Chase Bank kept putting "Foreclosure Auction" on my home while I was going through a modification with Chase. My home was in Newbury Park and I owned it for 33 years and lost it because of the fraud committed by Chase Bank. Huffington Post heard my story and didn't think it was important enough to print! OBVIOUSLY YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THIS HORRIBLE LOSS OF LIFE ANYMORE THAN YOU CARED ABOUT MY LOSS! You sound like you belong to the 1% that makes money on the lives of people that worked their asses off and got no help at all! Melanie Wead

Yet, the banks don't care, as long as they get their houses. People should attend their local court houses and see for themselves the foreclosure crisis. It's caused by the banks and not the people. If more people go to the court houses and support the people; then they'll know who truly caused the housing crash.
11:38 AM on 07/01/2012
who hasn't paid their house of within 33 years?
09:08 PM on 12/10/2012
Millions of people..is this your excuse for fraud?  Because my house wasn't paid off ? The fact that the Banks have committed so many errors and have lied to so many people and have been fined billions of dollars may have something to do with it.  You, on the other hand, have been able to predict the future and haven't suffered any loss...I don't wish you anything but continued success..And, a heart, integrity and connection with the human race.
