General Motors To Hire 200 Workers At Detroit-Hamtramck Plant

In the latest sign of the resurgence of the Detroit auto industry, General Motors is increasing the workforce at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant by 200 people.

GM is adding the new positions at its Chevy Volt factory to meet the demands, and adding the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu to its production line in July.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the company is relying on employee referrals to hire the new workers and is not taking applications for the jobs.

In March and April of this year, GM idled 1,300 workers at the plant in response to a slump in Volt sales.

GM isn't the only local automaker bringing jobs back to Detroit. In January, Chrysler announced it was adding 1,250 workers and creating a third shift at its Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, which builds Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos.

A month before that, Chrysler revealed it would reopen its Conner Avenue assembly plant, also located in Detroit, to produce the SRT Viper.

Both GM and Chrysler received extensive loans from the federal government in 2008 and 2009, but now both are making record profits again.
