Organic Eaters Might Be Meaner Than Their Counterparts, Study Finds

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: Updated: 05/18/2012 5:13 pm

Eating organic food may make people develop a holier-than-thou complex, according to a new study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.

Researchers divided subjects into three different groups. One was shown pictures of organic food, like apples and spinach, and another comfort food, like brownies and cookies. The remaining group, which served as the control, was shown foods that weren't organic or comfort foods, like rice, mustard and oatmeal.

Afterword, the subjects were asked to pass judgment on a variety of moral transgressions. The results were stark: People in the organic food group judged the issues much more harshly than the others.

MSNBC spoke with the one of the study's authors, Kendall Eskine, assistant professor of the department of psychological sciences at Loyola University, who explained he reason for exploring the phenomenon:

"I've noticed a lot of organic foods are marketed with moral terminology, like Honest Tea, and wondered if you exposed people to organic food, if it would make them pat themselves on the back for their moral and environmental choices. I wondered if they would be more altruistic or not."

The findings are especially interesting when considered hand in hand with previous studies, including a 2010 paper in the journal Psychological Science titled "Do Green Products Make Us Better People?" It found that when people feel morally virtuous about purchasing green or organic products, they sometimes experience a "licensing [of] selfish and morally questionable behaviour," otherwise known as "moral balancing" or "compensatory ethics."

The 2010 study suggests that such a "halo of green consumerism" makes people less likely to be kind to others, and more likely to cheat and steal.

What a load of BS! I've been eating organic food for years, and although I DO think I'm doing a good thing for the planet and for my body, I don't think anyone who knows me would think I'm 'mean'.

I think it's the other way around - people who are altruistic and morally virtuous tend to eat organic food since most of the time they're more aware of where their food is coming from, how it is grown, what animals are fed and how they're treated, etc.

So basically this study shows that people enjoy having superiority over others, even if it is over something as simple as a diet choice. I could have told you that and not needed as much funding!

that's because people can THINK MORE CLEARLY by eating organic & not putting excess hormones, ammonia, chemicals, pesticides, GMOs in their brain. I definatley think better & have better cognitive function to judge when eating organic. I take this as positive, not negative study. We should all understand the foods we eat ARE affecting us physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. eat organic for a few months & compare yourself

hmmm... judgement - what does that even mean. they were conducting a study that basically talked about how people negatively responded to food. how does that make them mean. I would be mean to the majority of the food producers in our country, because I am outright disgusted with how they treat the earth and all its living things - is that bad. how can something ever change without resistance? i'm fed up, so I think I have a right to hold resentment, although I don't direct that toward any one else, but I will not hesitate to speak out against those who are to blame. it's difficult because it's not just the producers who are at fault, but also the consumers. change will only occur when we express our utter disproval.

This is just stupid. Saying that people who eat organic are "mean" is like saying that people who eat fried twinkies are more altruistic. 'People who buy organic tend to be more self-righteous, MSNBC reports." Maybe they don't want their kids eating produce laden with pesticides. Sounds like whoever did this study has it in for people who buy organic food.

More like people who don't care enough to eat healthily don't often care about other issues. You only get one body. Treat it well.

Where do people find the time and the money to sit around and conduct such idiotic, skewed and completely useless studies?

Newsflash:

People who eat organic, tend to think that anything that disparages the supposed superiority of organic is funded by Monsanto.

Get a grip people. It's likely that you're wrong. That's life.

"Eating organic food may make people develop a holier-than-thou complex, according to a new study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science."

Didn't really need a study to know that.

I would never refer to myself as 'holier-than-thou' - but perhaps that is because I'm an atheist. Still, if I see a parent giving their kids all you can eat Doritos, Cola, donuts, and hot dogs, I will not be able to stop myself from thinking that they just don't give a shiite - and, admittedly, I will assume that their 'carefree' attitude about nutrition extends to other areas in their life, and in the world. Does that make me a 'FOODIST??'

Your tax dollars at work!! Are people writing this with a straight face? Who cares what people think when they eat organic (or non-organic) food. All the matters is the well documented facts that pesticides are killing us and the Earth which produces our food. (Don't forget the strong possibility that the powerful agriculture industry bankrolled this utterly ridiculous research.)

In this country people who read and understand the issues are called elitists. Mostly because people on the right do not like education that includes factual material.

Such nonsense. But aside from that, I will pick mean over dead of cancer any day.

Did you intend for those two sentences to be ironic?

No irony in what I said. Mean is a relative term, dead is an absolute.

Pick one. :)

Dr. Freud, is that you?

If you had any sense, you could deduce from my avatar that I am a guy, and you would know better than to insult your betters because you only wind up looking even more foolish than you normally do.

;) How is that for narcissism, oh great and powerful armchair psychologist?

What a buffoon you must be. Architect of your own demise..lol

Makes perfect sense to me. I may have worded it in another manner though. Perhaps instead of "meaner" I'd have gone with "self-righteous dou ches."

Up tight, pretentious, guilt ridden would also work.
