Italy Earthquake: At Least 3 Dead After Quake Hits Near Bologna

* Quake, strongest in Italy in three years, hit when most slept

* Castle, churches, other cultural sites damaged

* Up to 3,000 people may have been left homeless

* Government to declare state of emergency (Includes heart attack victim in death toll, Monti cuts short trip)

By Stephen Jewkes

SANT' AGOSTINO, Italy, May 20 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake in northern Italy killed at least six people, injured dozens and damaged historic buildings including a famed mediaeval castle early on Sunday, waking terrified citizens and sending thousands running into the streets.

The quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey recorded at magnitude 6.0, struck at 4:04 a.m. (0204 GMT) and was followed by a series of jolting aftershocks. At least two of them reached magnitude 5.1, sowing fresh panic, further damaging already weakened buildings and causing more structures to collapse.

"I am 83 and I have never felt anything like this," said Lina Gardenghi in the town of Bondeno, near Ferrara.

The epicentre of Italy's strongest quake in three years was near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po valley. The tremors were more deadly than any since 2009 - when the central city of L'Aquila was devastated - and were felt as far away as regions bordering France in the west and Slovenia to the east.

Among the dead was a woman of 106, killed in her bed by a falling roof beam at her house in the countryside.

The tremors seriously damaged many historic churches and other buildings, adding up to the greatest loss to Italy's artistic heritage since an earthquake in 1997 ravaged the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, where the ceiling collapsed.

On Sunday, the imposing 14th-century Estense Castle, symbol of the town of San Felice Sul Panaro and its most important building, was severely damaged.

The tops of several of its smaller towers collapsed and there were fears that the main tower, weakened by cracks, could tumble. Three of the town's churches were severely hit, damaging centuries-old frescoes and other works of art.

"We have practically lost all our artistic patrimony," said Alberto Silvestri, mayor of San Felice. "Churches and towers collapsed. The theatre is still standing but has cracks."

The quake left a gaping hole and gashes in the side of the Renaissance style town hall in Sant'Agostino, which officials said was in danger of total collapse. The town's streets were strewn with rubble and the stench of gas filled the town and raised fears of explosions.

Prime Minister Mario Monti cut short his trip to the United States and said the cabinet would declare a state of emergency, freeing up funds for quake relief.

NIGHT SHIFT DEATHS

Emergency service chief Franco Gabrielli said the death toll included five people killed directly by the quake and another who suffered a heart attack because of it. Officials said up to 3,000 people would not be able to return to their homes for the time being.

In Bondeno, a Moroccan man working a night shift in a polystyrene factory died when he was hit by falling debris.

A 57-year-old Italian was killed when part of an ironworks in Sant' Agostino collapsed, and two men were killed in the same town when part of a ceramics factory collapsed.

"He wasn't supposed to be there," the mother of one of the victims said. "He changed shifts with a friend who wanted to go to the beach."

A series of strong aftershocks hit the area, two having a magnitude of 5.1. Mayors ordered residents to stay outdoors pending checks by structural engineers and began preparations to house those who could not return to their homes.

The quake was centred 22 miles (35 km) north-northwest of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles (10 km), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The last major earthquake to hit Italy was the 6.3 magnitude shock which killed nearly 300 people in L'Aquila in April 2009. (Additional reporting by Steve Scherer and Daniele Mari in Rome, Writing by Philip Pullella; Editing by Tim Pearce and Alastair Macdonald)

I am of Italian heritage - 100% 1st generation - from Naples . Between Mt. Vesuvius spewing lava all over the place and earthquakes in Naples - any part of Italy is at risk for earthquakes . I feel for the 3 people killed - but on the other hand - preparation is key .

The person was only saying that huge events happen in waves. When one fault slips it causes pressure on other areas which eventually also have episodes. The lifespan of any one person can be lived without a serious natural event. Most people are not intellectual & pay attention to their daily life & little or none to historical matters. Schools should teach more about our natural world & less about the dates of long gone European wars. Thanks to computers & the WWW many are becoming more widely educated but don't expect miracles.

A 106 year old woman is killed in bed by a magnitude 6 earthquake. This always amazes me. She survives two world wars, depression, etc, etc, only to be killed by a beam in bed.

It is too bad, but why does this event amaze you? The explanation for the death seems plausible. That is, the earthquake caused a beam to fall on the woman lying in a bed in her home. She died as a result.

Maybe you are amazed because you suspect there is some link between the other variables (age, wars, depression, etc., etc.) and the earthquake or the death.

I don't believe there is any cosmic link between events and I understand the laws of probability. It just reinforces the fact that no matter how long we have lived, death can take us at any time for any reason. One tends to think that if they've survived long enough, they will go quietly to their grave dying of old age. It may not be a rational idea but I stake no claim to being completely rational. I suppose it is the same emotional response when the very young have their lives cut short. We may understand the cause but it still puts us in a state of shock and disbelief.

It used to mean Lots Of Love and then got corrupted to Laugh Out Loud. The first time I saw it used as a laugh I was very confused because I thought they were talking about love and it did not fit what was being said.

I had to ask when I first started on the internet. What does one hundred, and one mean? lol I kept seeing it typed. It doesn't bother me. I think it would bother me if some one told me a joke, and I said lol.:)

Living on the west coast of U. S. A. I am used to quakes , but you always do not know at first what is happening . I am in Arizona now and have not felt any quakes for the last 7 years. I hope ther is not more life taken in Italy , and wish those going thru this disaster to have courage . They say that this is a time of earthquake activity , but I do not think of it as the end , we are going thru a phase that is not very pleasant at all...Viva Italia

So you switched from EARTH SHACKING EVENTS to bloody DUST STORMS AND VALLEY FEVER caused by AIRBORNE SPORES Arizona air quality sucks worst then LA in the 50th and if Arizona had Earthquakes most of their buildings would collapse due to poor workmanship . So much for Arizona thanks but no thanks you can keep this dust pile .
02:20 PM on 05/20/2012
Your right , and I did't say I liked it , but those Valley fever spores are in Calif. in abundance . Those horrific dust storms hit Tucson and Phoenix more often than near the border , Bisbee , but alas I am at the roads end , and the only way out is to Texas , ugh , or Mexico , ugh , ugh or turn around and go Back , which I am seriously thinking of doing ..

Vernazza in the Cinque Terre, as well. They suffered a devastating flood there this past fall, when over 20 inches of rain fell in one shot. All 5 Cinque Terre villages are gorgeous, but we stayed in Vernazza, and I long to go back. The people in northern Italy seem so much friendlier than those in Rome. It is so sad to hear of centuries old structure being demolished, but the loss of life is most disturbing.

Earthquakes, hurricanes, tornado's, and erupting volcano's have been happening since the first day earth came into existance.. The world just didn't have world wide news services..
If one has an interest in history, there are written accounts of destroyed land and newly created land, Places are being found under the seas, even one in Wisconsin in Rock Lake at Lake Mills, where an ancient pyramid has been found, and even has a myth of a lake monster..
The earth shifts itself every 10,000 years + or - and we are late.. our magnetic poles will shift, north and south poles will be where the equator is now.. some humans may survive as always through the millions of years earth has existed..

So how long have you helped Satan push his lies? And exactly how do you explain the entire focus of the world is on the middle east, and Jerusalem is surrounded with enemies.
Does the fact that the whole world is going toward socialism ring a bell? The USA of all places has a muslim, socialiastic President. Wake up

Satan?  Really?  But then a Lutherans are thought to be evil by bible thumpers.. Hell, read the old testament the Jews were at war since the time of Abraham..... Mose's fought wars that would make the nazi's look like naughty boys.. (I
Samuel 6:19) Deuteronomy 13: 5) also read 13:6Deuteronomy 13:15 Oh by the way can you name one muslim country that has a communist government?  But hey,  if it wasn't for socialism, there would not be firemen, policemen, and other work paid for with our taxes. Our country would not be a democracy.. but instead it would be a theocracy.. and is why bible thumpers can not rule America..

Wow, Muslims? President? Jerusalem? Socialism? You're comparing an itty bitty slice of the present times to millions of years of Earth's upheaval? We are insignificant beings. The Earth has been cracking and moving forever, and it will continue to do so. Just under your feet there is a core of fire. Do you think everything that is now is just, now? Nothing is supposed to change? And when it does, drastically, it's God and Satan having a little push-pull between the fiery depths and the skies of heaven? Paleeezz...
