180 Bales Of Marijuana Found Floating In Ocean; Harbor Patrol Confiscates 8,068 Pounds

MARIJUANA MYSTERY: 8,068 Pounds Of Pot Found Floating In Ocean

U.S. Coast Guard officers are scratching their heads over 8,068 pounds of marijuana found floating in bales Sunday near Dana Point Harbor in California.

The watery weed -- which a boater found bobbing in 180 bales -- has an estimated street value of $4 million, the Orange County Register reported.

The problem is, nobody knows exactly where they came from.

Border Patrol spokesman Michael Jimenez said it's likely that someone dumped them from a vessel trying to flee from authorities, though no arrests have been made.

"At other events, they've dumped the bales to get rid of weight if they're being chased," he told the paper. "Generally in these cases we're aware they're being dumped. What's more unusual is that the bales were floating with no boat in sight."

After the find, federal, state and local law enforcement were seen moving all the tightly-wrapped and sealed packages from the water to police trucks.

The investigation is ongoing.
