Cannes Roof Collapse: Uncooperative Weather Puts A Dampener On Festival

So much for beautiful entertainment luminaries luxuriating around on yachts. Cannes has turned into a dreary mess of a place, with rain and wind collapsing a temporary theater's roof.

The compromised structure is part of the Soixantieme Theatre, which is found behind the Palais that hosts screenings and tributes. THR reports that two screenings were canceled, as Gonzalo Tobal's "Villegas" and Christian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills" were rescheduled.

The forecast doesn't look much better, with rain predicted for much of the week and temperatures limping back to the low 70s during the day. In Cannes during the Spring, this counts as bad weather.

One "industry executive" told THR that that he or she had "never seen it that bad."

The wacky weather will give festival-goers a distraction from the spectre of Cannes' sexism. The competition features exactly zero female directors, and many are up in arms about the secretive selection committees' apparent preference to include films with beautiful actresses over those directed by women.

Nonetheless, the stars have certainly flocked to the French Rivera, with the likes of Naomi Watts, Salma Hayek, Chris Pine, Gerard Butler and Bill Murray popping up around the Croisette.

Some parties were also moved indoors, but at press time, it was widely acknowledged that everything was going to be OK.
