The DeLorean, Back To The Future's Time Machine, Is Now A Bike

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: Updated: 05/21/2012 5:30 pm

This DeLorean may never get up to 88 miles per hour, but "Back to the Future" fans will still be interested. While the car made famous by time-travel trilogy won’t be back until 2013, this time as an electric car, in the meantime you can spend a little less for its two wheeled counterpart. The DeLorean’s stainless steel charm -- now made from Italian Columbus XCR stainless steel tubing -- has been revived in bicycle form by bicycle maker Marc Moore and Stephen Wynne, the president of the new, Texas-based incarnation of DeLorean Motor.

The first model of the DeLorean bike will be the “Anyday”, an 11-speed bike with “luminescent” coated wheels that “appear to turn on” when lights shine on them. The Anyday’s auto counterpart fetched $25,000 in the early 1980s, and the bike is no bargain either. This DeLorean revision will cost a -- great Scott! -- hefty $5,500.

The price is in line with its creators understanding that the DeLorean brand has often been an acquired taste. “It’s a bicycle that bike aficionados can look at and say, ‘Yes, that’s cool, and it’s got all of the right equipment on it,’” Wynne told Bloomberg Businessweek.

If you’re willing to splurge, the bike is available at the DeLorean Bicycle website.

Lamborghini sells a heavy duty bike that's made in China; I assume the stainless DeLorean will be the same heavy, slow, clunky bike.

It might be worth the price if they used an actual DeLorean to make the bikes...

Buy a Huffy, remove the decal and hand paint "De Lorean" in their place. Done deal!

yes, stainless is probably much too stiff for good ride, but if it's Columbus..

It's supposed to be a commuter. For half the price one could get a Surly Cross-Check or a Soma Double-Cross and trick it out as a fantastic commuter bike. And for 1/5 the price you could get an off-the-shelf bike that would serve beautifully.

Meh - I'll take a Stevens SLR any day of the week.  Same price - vastly better bike.

This is my Schwinn (Apr 2, 2012) i purchased 29 years ago this month. I paid $279.00 for it and still ride it everyday. Any bike $5,000.00 must be made of gold to worth that price.
