Arsht Center Leak Prompts Evacuation From "The Lion King"

Massive rains forced an evacuation at the Arsht Center during the second act of the "The Lion King" Sunday night.

"An alarm went off and they stopped everything and they told us, 'Calm down, we're just checking to see why the alarm went off,'" an audience member told WSVN 7.

According to a statement from Scott Shiller, Arsht's executive vice president, Sunday night's heavy rain and flash flooding caused a drain line to leak, leading to flooding of the lobby and other areas in the center.

Shortly after intermission, the sold-out performance's 2,400 guests were forced to evacuate the Ziff Ballet Opera House.

"It was like the Titanic, it was coming in, it was like an indoor fountain, splashing all over the carpets," audience member Ellie Stern told NBC Miami.

“The top floor, you could see some of the water coming inside the atrium itself," said Richard Trujillo, who saw the show with his wife. “I’m disappointed, we thought it was a great show, but nobody expected that.”

In audience photographs collected by Local 10, water can be seen leaking from the overhead lighting and forming large puddles on the performing arts center's floor.

“Our engineering team has determined that the leak is controlled and it is now being repaired,” Shiller said in the statement, adding that those who were in the audience that evening can exchange their tickets for a future performance through June 10.

Officials told WSVN 7 that the theater should be ready in time for Tuesday’s performance of “The Lion King.”
