'Good Afternoon America': ABC Confirms 'Good Morning America' Daytime Spinoff

It's Official: 'Good Morning America' Is Getting An Afternoon Edition

It's official: "Good Morning America" is getting an afternoon spinoff.

ABC confirmed on Monday what had been widely reported in April: that its newly resurgent morning show will be expanding into daytime for nine weeks this summer.

"Good Afternoon America," as the new edition is called, will be co-hosted by "GMA" regulars Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer. It launches July 9 and will air at 2 PM. A press release signalled that the show will focus firmly on the lighter side of the news, with musical performances, pop culture updates and "original entertainment, lifestyle, health, workplace and consumer reporting."

The move comes just as "GMA" has firmly knocked its rival "Today" out of the perennial top slot in the mornings. After breaking the NBC show's 16-year winning streak, the two programs have battled back and forth, trading the winning spot each week. It also represents a chance for ABC to extend the highly profitable "GMA" brand, just as "Today" has done with its third and fourth hours.
