Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is the pop culture gift that keeps on giving. Even President Barack Obama and presidential candidate Mitt Romney are hopping on the "Call Me Maybe" train. Well, not really, but ... maybe? (Sorry.)
Thanks to some clever video editing, the two politicians performed the viral song in a similar fashion as some Harvard athletes did earlier this month. The end result -- which premiered on "The Tonight Show" -- was pretty magical.
The "Call Me Maybe" craze started in February, when Justin Bieber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez, together with a few of their famous friends, recorded an adorable lip sync video to Jepsen's infectious pop song. Thanks to Bieber -- and his 21 million Beliebers -- "Call Me Maybe" became an overnight internet sensation.
Popstar Katy Perry caught the "Call Me Maybe" bug and uploaded her own parody, featuring herself and a group of friends at a Coachella poolside party. Even James Franco couldn't resist Jepsen's charms. The actor posted his own version of the song in April.
"Call Me Maybe" isn't just for the celebrity crowd. Lip syncing parodies seem to be the latest fad among college students, especially collegiate athletes. Sports teams from Duke, University of Connecticut and Syracuse have all posted their own unique parodies of the pop tune, but the Harvard baseball team really put the meme on the map when they choreographed a catchy fist-pump dance while lip syncing along to the single.
Not to be outdone, the girls of Southern Methodist University's female rowing team recorded a version, using only their legs. Sooner or later, Kathie Lee and Hoda caught on to the "Call Me Maybe" craze and performed their own choreographed dance routine to the song on their morning show -- Spanx and all!
It seems the only person who hasn't recorded a video of herself lip syncing along to the catchy track is Jepsen, but we all know what happened when Hilary Clinton caught on to her meme. Maybe it's better if Jepsen sits this one out.
