Joe Paterno Pension:Coach Earned $13.4 Million At Penn State

Joe Paterno

GENARO C. ARMAS   05/22/12 06:50 PM ET  AP

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno earned a state pension of $13.4 million for his 61-year coaching career at Penn State.

Paterno's family said Tuesday through a spokesman that Paterno's widow, Sue, would receive an initial payment of $10.1 million by the end of May, with the rest to be paid out over the next two years.

The calculations were made through the standard formula for anyone in the State Employees' Retirement System, according to his family. Paterno never accessed his pension.

State law outlines how retirement benefits are calculated. All SERS members receive the same consideration, retirement system spokeswoman Pam Hile said.

Paterno family spokesman Dan McGinn said the family also planned to donate $1.5 million to Penn State-related or State College-area charities.

Paterno died in January at age 85, less than three months after being ousted by trustees in the aftermath of child sexual abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno began working at Penn State as an assistant coach in 1950 before being promoted to head coach in 1966. He held Division I records for head-coaching tenure at one school and career victories, with 409.

The Hall of Famer had a compensation package from Penn State worth $1.02 million last year, making him the university's top earner, according to an open-records report released by the university in May 2011.

But the formula to calculate the pension could account for no more than $240,000 in salary, the family said.

The Penn State report doesn't include compensation from outside the university that top coaches typically collect, like endorsement deals.

Still, Paterno's total compensation paled in comparison to many of college football's other well-known coaches, especially since Penn State won two national titles under Paterno. For instance, Alabama pays Nick Saban more than $4.6 million a year, while Oklahoma's Bob Stoops earns nearly $4 million.

"Financial gain was never Coach Paterno's top priority," McGinn said. "He believed he was fortunate to work with great young men at one of the country's premier academic institutions."

Including the $1.5 million in donations announced Tuesday, McGinn said the Paternos have given roughly $9 million to Penn State or other charitable causes. That would include roughly $4 million to help in part build a campus library which bears the family's name, and endow faculty positions and scholarships.

"A commitment to give back to the community that had welcomed and supported them so fully was always a priority for Joe and Sue Paterno," McGinn said.

Out of the latest donation, $500,000 will go to the Catholic center on campus. The remaining $1 million is pledged to the Paterno Foundation, which is selling a DVD of the Jan. 26 memorial service for Paterno. The family has said proceeds from the DVD sale will go to Special Olympics – a cause championed by Sue Paterno.

The foundation will also donate to other area charities.

Distribution of the state retirement system benefits can vary from year to year because of numerous legislative changes. Payments can also vary according to the benefit options chosen by the member, Hile said, and if a member dies, options also vary for beneficiaries.

After this Sandusky case is done people are going to owe the Paterno family a sincere apology (my best guess)

The man was a legend and did so much more than just coach good football teams. RIP

Like it or not the school is already making good on their obligations after tossing him under the bus to deflect from their own moral failings. She'll get all the school owed Joe per his contract and they did not get a release from their legal liability with the family. Luckily for the school Sue is probably not going to sue them for their breach of duty in the midst of the Sandusky scandal. What she will do is donate still more millions to help others.

60+ years at a top level position and he never touched it when he had the rights to it. Don't get so worked up about it. It's not like he was a run of the mill employee.

This guy worked for the university for over 60 years with a decent salary, it's expected that his pension would grow over that time. Not quite sure what the problem is.

Good to see a large chunk of the money is being pledged for charity.

I was obviously mistaken.

Most don't. And those others didn't create & perpetuate a top notch football program over 60+ years that generated 100's of millions of $'s that were used to support other athletic programs & 10's of thousands of scholarships for youths who would otherwise never be able to afford a top notch college education.. His salary and pension was worth every cent that was paid. And he and his family has donated and will be donating millions back to PSU!!!

Time to bring in the bull-dozers and plant a forest in its place...seriously, what a disgrace to humanity!

I am die hard a Ohio State fan & I have nothing but the highest regard for Joe Paterno & his family. What kills me is that Sandusky - doesn't know what 911 is guy - is still walking around as a PSU employee. He's the one that should get canned. He is no better than a person who leaves the site of an accident with death or injury.
07:49 AM on 05/24/2012
While anyone would be envious of Joe Paterno’s salary of $1.4 million a year and the multimillion dollar pension that he accumulated, considering the multi-million dollar profits that Joe Paterno generated every year from his football program for the university that was able to be used for its other unprofitable athletic programs and for its academic programs, and the incalculable intangible quality contributions to the character and education of the lives of thousands of children and young men and women that he made day in and day out for over 61 years at one of the country's premier academic institutions, it is disgusting to see the venom that the those who are holier than thou art people have spit out at Joe Paterno and his family.
Furthermore, the fact that Joe and his family have and are donating millions of the wealth that he has earned and accumulated over the years to Penn State University for the benefit of its students and community show that both Joe and his family are people to be honored and not besmirched.
To those holier than thou art people, it is long past time for all of you to look in the mirror and see what you have done for others and your communities during your lifetime, and compare that to what Joe Paterno and his family have done before you open your mouths again.

It wasn't Joes fault the University didn't handle the matter. It's not Joes fault the police didn't handle the matter.
In the end Penn State killed Paterno by sucking his life out of him. Leaving him a shriveled up old man.

What is Papa Joe's fault is not acting swiftly and decisively when that stain of a man, McQueary went to him initially about what he saw. Paterno ran that entire football program, period. Instead, he revealed himself to be a ghost hero for obviously talking the talk, but never walking the walk.
10:15 AM on 05/26/2012
What exactly did McQuerh tell Paterno? Paterno said he was told something 'appeared to be not appropriate.'. 10 years later he yells 'rape'. If it were me I would have done the same as Joe. Why? Because what Sandusky never really saw or told Joe anything significant enuf to warrant a call to police. How could any person see what Samdusky claimed he saw and not call 911? And if he really called his dad and told him that he saw a rape, why didn' the dad call the cops himself? You are totally wrong. Sandusky is a liar and Joe did nothing wrong. And you are wrong and just banging a drum.

You are right, showing JoePa to be a man a man with failings like all of us.  He evidently thought that notifying his immediate superiors and the campus police was the right thing to do, that they would take charge and handle the matter.
Joe could have called the Governors office, or the big Philly and Pittsburgh TV news stations....they would have taken the call.

This just slays me. This money should be paid to the men that were hurt by a man he protected.
08:02 AM on 05/24/2012
He protected no one.
Joe reported the alleged incident promptly to the proper authority as he was required to do.
The person that reported it to him should have called 911 when he allegedly witnessed it
if it was as that witness now says it was, and if it was as he now say ist was, he should be the one to be responsible for any rightful recovery of any damages since it was he that should have immediately called 911, not Joe.
In my opinion, that witness must be a liar considering that he did not call 911 himself when he allegedly witnessed the incident, and that wil make any testimony he gives worthless at any trial. If I were on the jury, that is exactly what I would decide.
Stop being a holier than thou art person and look at the facts.

The fallback position of a weak defense is citing the letter of the law. Paterno is guilty of violating the spirit of what can not be legislated, which is to do the right thing. Freak out when told this; approach Sandusky face to face and inform him that the police will be notified, not school authorities and that it will followed up and that he is no longer welcome at the facility until all is resolved. (And please do not cite hindsight or innoncent until proven guilt - that is the burden of the state, not individuals). Simply put, would you as the parent or guardian of one of these "alleged" victims be satisfied w/ the actions/inactions of every single individual involved in this?!

Showing disdain towards those of us who are disgusted by this instead of revealing loyalty over decency says more about you.

he knew what Sandusky did, didn't do really nothing about it, "should have done more" his words...harboring. Amazing how people can flock around a football coach, and ditch the kids involved. When did a game become more important then the innocent?
02:26 AM on 05/24/2012
Someone who knows of a child getting molested and looks the other way and doesn't turn the molester into the police is just as bad as the creep doing the kid himself.
08:06 AM on 05/24/2012
Exactly. So why isn't the assistant that alledgedly witnessed the incident and didn't call 911 when he alledgedly witnessed it on the hot seat instead of Joe? Because the assistant must be a liar, and therefore his testimony at any trial will be worthless.

stjohn123, of all the stupid nonsense. McQueary reported what he had seen to Joe AFTER the event took place. Joe then reported it to his superiors, as per university policy. Joe witnessed no crime. Your statements are clear hysterical and not based on any real facts, you're just vilifying Joe because of your outrage over Sandusky's alleged acts. That's right, alleged. No trial has been held and no one has been found guilty of anything. and when that trial is held, it will come out clearly that Paterno had NO responsibility in any of this. And then hysterical fools like you will be revealed for the blithering, rush-to-judgment fools that they are.
01:14 PM on 05/25/2012
Well, common sense dictates that Paterno call the police instead of solely reporting it to the univ. police as "per university policy." Aren't there some instances in your mind where "company, or university policy" aren't adequate? A child being showered with, molested, even brought into the showers to shower with him is strange and should have raised eyebrows. Lastly, there is no way you are going to convince me, or a grand jury, that Paterno didn't hear many rumors over the years that Sandusky was molesting young boys. There is no way that Paterno didn't notice Sandusky was constantly hanging around boys and didn't think it was strange. Sandusky brought young boys on their away games and had them sleeping in his hotel room. These weren't his children. I mean come on, take the blinders off here. It was obvious and apparent to anyone with half a brain what was going on and Joe decided to turn away from evil and not report it and that was wrong.
