Colin Powell Not Ready To Endorse Obama For Re-election

05/22/12 04:09 PM ET AP

WASHINGTON — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell declined Tuesday to renew the presidential endorsement he gave Barack Obama four years ago, saying he wasn't ready "to throw my weight behind someone" at this time.

The former chairman of the military's Joint Chiefs of Staff and Cabinet member under President George W. Bush demurred when asked if he was backing Obama again. A longtime GOP figure, Powell caused a stir in Republican political circles four years ago by endorsing Obama over war hero Sen. John McCain, calling Obama a "transformational figure."

Not so this time, Powell said on NBC's "Today" show. At least, not yet.

"It's not just a matter of whether you support Obama or (Mitt) Romney. It's who they have coming in with them," he said.

Pressed to say why he was holding back on giving Obama his blessing a second time, Powell said: "I always keep my powder dry, as they say in the military."

He said Obama had "stabilized the financial system" following the deep recession of 2008-2009 and had "fixed the auto industry." Powell also said he thought the country was on the right path toward ending the war in Afghanistan.

But he also said he thought Obama needed to work more on the economy and said he thought that he owed it to the Republican Party to listen to the proposals that likely nominee Romney will be offering, particularly on the economy.

Powell said he's "still listening" to Republican ideas, calling Romney "a good man" and saying he wasn't ready to make a commitment to Obama.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama appreciated Powell's endorsement four years ago.

"It's up to him and every American to decide whom they will support going forward," he said. Carney said Obama has worked to fulfill the commitments he made on national security and domestic policy issues, two areas important to Powell.

Powell has been an enigmatic figure in the Republican Party, and his name often has been mentioned in both presidential and vice presidential speculation. He was the first black head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Last year, Powell told graduates of South Carolina's premier historically black university that, among other things, he had been particularly heartened by a recent event.

"That was when President Obama took out his birth certificate and blew away Donald Trump and all the birthers," he told students at South Carolina State University. That was a reference to those who doubt Obama was born in the U.S.

Powell also supported Obama in getting the U.S. Senate to ratify the New START treaty with Russia, trimming the nuclear stockpiles held by both countries.

After the book tour, Colin will likely endorse Obama again. He is 'keeping his powder dry' now not to negatively affect his book sales.

I think there's a lot of anti-Obama hate going on inside the GOP and they seem reluctant if not just plain afraid to go against the majority of other GOP these days. May have something to do with the crooked Koch brothers throwing their weight and their money - and who knows, maybe threats of political damage to his career, around as well. Still Powell is basically a stable force and I think in the end he will see Obama is the one to support, but in this GOP he will probably be "excommunicated" from the party if he dares to speak his mind differently than they want. I'm voting for Obama regardless. I don't think the Borg Collective is qualified to run the country.

Colin doesn't want that hit to the jugular like he did last time he backed Obama. Obama supports know that verbal beat down you get for choosing Obama. Colin will vote for him again, he just won't talk about it this time. Good answer Colin, can't say I blame you it's easier.

Yes, the GOP is getting pretty vicious even against their own if they don't do and say what the Koch machine wants. If there is fear in their own party I think there is much for Americans in general to fear if they get into the White House. If their own members aren't safe from them and fear to speak a different opinion, how safe will Americans be in general if the Mormon gets elected?

I agree! If the GOP takes office this country will become a nazi controlled concentration camp. We will be worked and taxed to the death and women's rights will be nil! They  would set the women's movement back to prohibition.

He is going to vote for Obama again. He knows it. Otherwise he wouldn't be saying all those positive things about him. He will do it like last time during perfect timing once the right really gets radical again. We expect nothing less from Rove.

Last election, Gen. Powell got everything he asked from the Republicans: An experienced, middle of the roader who was willing to compromise with opponents to get the job done. He then proceeded to back Obama for POTUS. I wonder why?
02:59 PM on 05/22/2012
Because he knew Obama would be a better President than McPalin.

Besides, McCain was most certainly not a 'Middle of the Roader'

The big bucks are coming from the Koch brothers and their ilk - they've practically purchased the GOP, which has forgotten about its constituents. You know that old movie "The Stepford Wives"? Reminds me of how the GOP is now - rigid, mindless, dangerous. Interesting how their supporters bellow loud and long about protecting so-called individual "freedoms" - yet want to destroy everyone else's. They're a bunch of hypocrites, nothing more. I doubt Powell supports their slop.

I count 5 Dem talking points in your post; although not a Huffie record, that's pretty good. But now that your conditioned mind has reacted, how about commenting on Pelosi's video with Maher?
